Quoted from pinballslave:

That's dedication!! I normally leave whatever looks nice on the front of the playfield so it looks as complete as possible... to minimise the weight, for drop targets, I've taken to removing the targets from the mechs and fixing them to the back of the playfield onto a piece of wood so it looks complete on the front.

I took some old Bally drop targets, cut them short and attached them to a piece of wood as well. That is what is in the CRANE and eyeball stand up area.

The "build" is here if interested.

Looks great, thanks for the link! I notice the Christmas lights are 2 circuit lights... I was thinking of adding Christmas lights to some of the playfirlds in this ceiling project, but I was hoping to use lights that have at least 4 circuits... I notice all lights in shops near where I live are 2 circuit designs too... maybe multiple circuit lights are a thing of the past... need to investigate! Bigguybbr's lighting knocks the socks off any form of Christmas lights though, so I'm interested in that now!

I was just looking for some cheap animation, I think the most expensive items doing this was the new posts and lane guides.

How have you done that??

It uses an Arduino, a 5v switching power supply and addressable LEDS. It randomly switches between 5 or 6 different programmed lighting patterns including one that was my best approximation of the original attract mode. The coding was pretty simple.

killerrobots started a thread about his approach, and I made my own modifications. It's 100% reversable, so if ever anyone gets mine, and recoils in horror, they can simply take it apart and reuse the playfield. It is mounted in a frame I made with some old playfield glass and some spare rails I had. I still need to hang it some where or just sell it.

That’s pretty cool! I thought you were referring to that Airfields kit that was made a few years ago by PinHacks

I can't take credit. killerrobots started the initall guide. I just added in my own contributions to his thread with changes I made.

Quoted from gdonovan:

I have a Last Action Hero playfield that came with a pin I purchased from a swap, its repairable so I didn't do anything to damage it when I made it a wall hanger. It uses a set of LED Christmas lamps from Amazon for lighting.
The crane, apron and several plastics were made from scratch.

I really like the Christmas light idea - did you use a staple gun on the back to hold them in place?

Hot glue.

I use wire clips and the existing screw holes. Just size them for the type of light you are using.

The apron looks like it is in good shape. Repro play fields, plastics and back glasses are available. I would love to have it. Mine is not prefect but it is too nice to restore. And I want a restored Catacomb.

Is it yours?

We did have it restored. CPR playfield, new playfield hardware, new or serviced boards, new wiring, new translite, etc. Plastics actually cleaned up perfectly, none were broken. Cabinet wasn’t in terrible shape. A little backbox warping but nothing crazy. All of the art was intact. We had it on location for a bit but sold it last year. Put the old playfield on the wall.

I used to spend a lot of time in their shop in Berkeley when I was working out there for a stint... spent so much time there I started dating the woman looking after the experimental section

Here's something I found while sorting through a box of parts tonight... not a horror, but worthy of posting here due to the hack-factor! This is worth mounting in a glass case and putting on the wall IMO... hats off to whoever made this to keep the pinball working!!

I'd scrub some vinegar using an old tooth brush onto those corroded areas ASAP! Don't know if that's the ideal recommended action... but it's what I was told to do by several people more clever than me!

Yes. Remove all socketed chips. Then scrub both sides of board with vinegar. Let it soak for a while, then rinse with clean water. Chances are, you might end up with a working board, but if the corrosion has gone too far, the board will unfortunately stop working in a few months.

My advice is, let the vinegar work for at least a few hours. Then soak the board in clean water again for a few hours (refresh the water and brush off the vinegar a few times).

The Zep is awesome, far better than vinegar.

OK as long as it is acidic, to neutralize the alkaline leak from batteries / NiCd cells.

Make sure you clean the vinegar off extremely well or it will continue to eat through the board were the battery acid left off!

I use distilled vinegar and then 95% isopropyl alcohol to clean the board. Always remove socketed chips prior!

This was the operator hack off the Fish Tales I just got.

Yes, this worked flawlessly, believe it or not, and the yellow/grey wire wasn’t even soldered, it was just wrapped around the diode.

If you go over permanent marker with a dry erase you can sometimes get it off surfaces.

Sucks to see that treatment on a table for sure.

It will be a restoration project for someone else 30 years from now .

It will come right off with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).

Do you really think this game still exists in 30 years? :O

#3796 2 years ago
Quoted from snowy_owl:

Obviously the operator got tired of people complaining that the game didn't work after they put their money in! I guess the original start button was clear so a bulb could flash behind it and illuminate the word 'start', but he changed it out for a non-transparent button...

Just saw this one posted in the Fish Tales thread. This was found in an abandoned house. I love the ceiling mod. Never let the dimensions of your home limit your pinball imagination.

This is @herbertbsharp’s game he just picked up.
This local op complained that the Stern start buttons don’t always flash.
It was explained to him that they only flash when you have credits and can start a game.

So this genius decided that sucks and he swapped out a perfectly good button (THAT SAYS START) and put a goofy flipper button there and WROTE “start” on the cabinet.
An absolute WTF moment because we coached this guy through the concept several times before he “modified” it anyway. You can’t make it up
