Glued and reinforced, just to give this saga an ending.

Quoted from Riefepeters:

When I transport, I use four of these cardboard corners to protect the head and cab and use a lashing strap to strap the head down. These corners are then on the bottom of the cab and used as sleds going in and out of the vehicle.
[quoted image]

You can get these things for free at just about any major US supermarket. These things are often on pallet modules of food and paper product. If you go in the store at night when they are stocking shelves, they will let you have them for free. It’s scrap cardboard to them they have to bale.

Damn, that worked way better than I thought. Good job.

Also bonus I didn’t know that’s how those flipper optos were set up. Learn something new every day

Not exactly a horror pic, but I've never seen anything like this before:

How may plays on that machine?

Not the worst offense in this thread, but I'm pretty sure this prewar had never been cleaned before. Here's a before, after, and close up of one of the areas on the play field.

I picked up a lightly routed GOTG that was far dirtier than that. Nice find!

The Sky Jump I picked up:

Also had woodworm through the cabinet so I had to chuck it in the freezer for a few weeks... But came up ok after a lot of TLC:

Not that bad actually. I’m afraid the cost might be much higher than restoring a real pinball and it removes some nostalgia so there is no point.

#3561 2 years ago

Awesome work but I don't get what drives people to this much effort for coffee table pinball.

#3562 2 years ago

I think that’s a really neat concept where the playfield gets jacked steeper if your ball time gets so long.

Quoted from EJS:

Great for cafes too. The longer you're at the table, the steeper it gets. Everytime you buy something, the angle resets. Stop those punks who come in and buy one coffee then use the wifi all day...

Speaking of fuses… found inside a SpaceLab conversion.

This is the spare key for my Melody. It must have come loose during a move and gotten across something when I turned it on. Never blew a fuse and everything plays fine, but the key doesn't look good.

Just started today picking up pins that had been stored about 10 years in shipping containers. I’ll be looking for some cabinets if anyone knows of some for sale. There was a few nice ones stored in sheds so I didn’t show them.

Oh that is so painful to see!!! Makes me want to cry...

It is like looking at a train wreck, you just can't look away from all the destruction.

I've never seen a cabinet delaminate and buckle like that. Those wavy layers of cabinet wood on Demo Man kind of add an artistic look to it.

Seriously, is there anything even worth saving?

#3569 2 years ago

Oh my goodness
Hard to see
Never seen so many swell out that bad
Must have been there a long time
Ah 10 years makes sense

You will need several cabinets but I’m sure u will salvage a lot

I've seen plenty of damaged machines in my travels. But I've never seen that. What a fucking shame.

#3571 2 years ago

Fish tales was rained on, see holes in roof, so the bottom feel out. TAF looks ok, it was in a shed with others, just had a rats nest in it. After getting them all out I’ll have a better idea of what can be salvaged.

#3572 2 years ago

Road Show warehouse find. I'm going to learn a lot about dealing with rust.

Wow, lots of projects there! Good luck with restorations or sales. Plenty of folks looking for project pins. I recall hearing a guest on Slam Tilt podcast who is making/selling new cabs.

Would love to hear more of the story.

Holy god damn!!!!! Those cabinets are so depressing. That Demoman looks like it’s out of MoMA!
Bizarre. Depressing.

Good luck saving them! It’s a noble cause. In this market it’s starting to become financially justifiable to save even the worst projects!

Evaporust and a tumbler are going to be your best friends. I never used Evaporust before my last project. It is magical stuff.

23 years ago, I was stepping off my boat on to the dock at my house. My foot slipped as I was stepping off the boat and my left leg fell into the boat while I was stepping off with my light. This resulted in me hyperextending my right knee, spraining the big toe on my left foot, and tearing my bean bag on the boat's rope cleat as I fell in the water...slamming my shoulder on the edge of the dock as I fell in the water. I got 5 stitches in my sack and 12 in my shoulder and I still have trouble with my knee.

Up until the moment I saw these pics, that was the most painful thing I had ever experienced.

Is it weird that I look at those and my immediate reaction is that it would be fun to rebuild them? Sure you would spend a bucket of money to do it, but it would make for an interesting few months of work.

How much is really salvageable though? Have to see more pictures.

Boards MIGHT be ok (assuming no battery damage) obviously a number of plastic items. Anything metal is going to depend on location and humidity levels, which looking at the cabinets not optimistic. The ones on Adams look ok, will assume it was further away from the roof leak.

What a damn shame.

New category Rat Rod pinball?
What’s the grossest it can look and still work fine?

Cabinets are definitely roached, or at the very least the heads are. You wouldn't know what was truly salvageable until you get elbow deep in it. This wouldn't be a project to flip, or even be remotely profitable. It would cost too much and take too many hours. I just think the work would be a lot of fun trying to bring back something that far gone.

With prices today, it’s definitely economically feasible! If not, wait 3 years and people will be paying 7k for Demoman and throwing fists for that project lol

#3590 2 years ago

If the cabinets are that bad, wouldn't the playfields have warping or possible delamination issues?

#3591 2 years ago
Quoted from finman2000:

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes the cab protects the playfield enough so that it ends up being salvageable.

That Demo Man head reminded me of this ribbon candy my nana used to put out at Xmas 30 years ago. I hadn’t thought of that stuff in decades. Thanks for the memory! Such a sad sight, however.

And yet the Fish Tales doesn't look like it has that bad cabinet fade!

Quoted from Pinkitten:

That stuff was like swallowing razor blades.

#3595 2 years ago

I had a black knight where the entire cabinet bottom had fallen apart and was gone and the sides were swollen and delaminated.

The playfield was perfect underneath. The cab Def saved it!

Feast your eyes on this. It will remember your high scores or jump start your car if needed. The cross reflection from the sun is accidental, but a fitting sign of death for this board.
