Quoted from F-14Pin:

Looks like insulation from the overhead

Not sure...the owner said it was filled with crap, which I took literally. He also said it was in a barn, which I'm guessing wasn't insulated. Not that someone couldn't have put leftover insulation over the playfield, but I doubt that's what it is.

If it looks like poop
And smells like poop......

#3253 2 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

One is a Gottleib or at a minimum has Gottlieb legs.

I remember that thread you had going, Firepower or Blackout wasn't it? Just disintegrated.

It was Blackout and Meteor, the latter which basically disintegrated. zacaj saved Blackout. Cabinet was good but they ate the playfield. He hasn’t had any issues though.

Obviously a double wrap round with packing tape is not enough to hold the head against the machine with a 4 player EM head on top if it!! Yes, I'm an idiot!

Ouch.

#3257 2 years ago

I thought that head could have punched it's way through the light board and smashed up the boards, but the light board was strong enough to resist the impact... most of the force went to the top of the head... I was pleased to find that my new floor was un-damaged! Funny how the EM head rotated almost a full 90deg as it fell, and just sat there!

Repair is underway, but it will never look the same.

Most EM cabs are pretty well made, I was surprised to find that out when doing some restoration on mid-60's Ballys.

The joints were very well done and stout.

#3259 2 years ago
Quoted from Colsond3:

I actually still have a very nice one that I restored for my daughter when she was younger. Picked it up as a total shit show. It’s a fun game for kids, and costs next to nothing.
I even powdercoated the legs, which is probably half of what the machine is worth.
I’m absolutely certain no one else on all of Pinside can say they have a restored Wico Big Top. LOL.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Big Top... it's right up there with 70s pins from Chicago Coin... playfield snooze-fest appeal on par.

Hey, why all the hate on Big Ben?

I'm guessing ya'll don't like it just because you can't keep your balls from draining down the outlanes.

Had one for awhile, pretty to look at but not much to do.

True. But, IMHO, a good cool-down game. Y'know, after getting kicked in the ass by ACNC or another heavy, difficult game, sometimes it's nice to just .. score. And not have to worry about multiple shots to make in the next 5 seconds.

'Sides, once the game is cleaned up and plays fast.. it can still offer a challenge! photo_2021-06-19_21-42-51 (resized).jpgphoto_2021-06-19_21-42-51 (resized).jpg
I've put more time and money into this game than I will EVER see back, but I don't care. Not doin' it for an investment. And when I level it out and make it steep, I can't wait to have folks over and swear at it.

Sorry, OT. I'll shut up!

Big Ben’s actually a fun game, I’ve had a couple nice examples over the years. I always enjoyed the simple yet open playfield and actually liked Big Ben better than Triple Action and Wild Card that I also had. Just wish Big Ben had a 100,000 light, (although it was difficult to rollover). The pop bumpers seemed so strong

Wow! That backglass looks actually good! I’ve always been amazed at that era Bally backglass how well they hold up. Wizard, Hi Deal, Odds & Evens, and a few more, yet Bally Champ didn’t hold up??

I'd need for it to roast more in direct sunlight before I Make Offer

No doubt about it... I do have a kind of packing strip machine which would be plenty strong enough, but I was just lazy and didn't imagine it would break... thrust it to be the last one in the row... had any of the others gone the head would have been caught by the game next to it!

About a year ago that title (and maybe same game) popped up in the Chicago area and the guy was quickly overwhelmed with the amount of messages. He initially had it listed for $500 and it was BEAT. Everything was rusted to shit and the cabinet looked like it was stored on damp ground for the last century.

No really a horror pic, but someone went to a lot of effort to replace the "missing" tooth on my Jet Spin bonus unit.

On a palooka, blown fuse, no problem! Lost that rollover button screw, this one won’t fall out! Let me make sure I get that free high score extra ball when I want it!

Someone didn’t read Vid’s cabinet restoration tips. Do you think this is a magician’s escape box machine?

Making the ball tilt more or less sensitive? Rather than just changing the angle of the frame...

You know.. that's not a bad idea, now!

Quoted from ajfclark:

I have a feeling it makes it more sensitive. Have to lift the front of the cabinet less before the (MANY) balls roll back?

I am amused by that, frankly.

Lift the cabinet? Heck, I have my roll tilt set so that my down nudges on the lockbar make that ball move.

These tilt balls are smaller than the playing balls, no?

Not heard of 'down nudging' before... what does that entail? Don't tell me... nudging downwards...?

BEHOLD! My collection of popped Ghostbusters node boards. There's a horror story. These have cost me over £1K to replace. I also have a BM66. The minute that starts crapping node boards, it's gone. Thanks, Stern.

They are smaller and have a special coating so they do not rust while they just sit there until the end of time.

Is there a list of games these special popping node boards appear in so they can be avoided? Is Stranger Things in that list?

Good question! The popped 8 and 9 boards were clearly older versions. The new ones I had to buy were a different size and had differently-sized standoffs which would have caused the screws to poke through the playfield if I hadn't checked first. I had to make new screw-holes underneath the playfield for the new boards, which caused me to have to drink more beer than is usual. Connections were the same, though, as you'd expect. See the link below for pics! The CPU board kindly lost its 5v logic. LED off. I was quite cross.

Yes you're right, and the very second Batman craps a node board out, the whole machine's going out the nearest window.

1-1/16", same as standard.

Quoted from pinballslave:

It's actually an up nudge, but I'm rapping my hands almost vertically down on the lockdown bar so the movement of the machine front to back is very slight.

Not trying to run salt in the wound or anything, but was there anything in particular that you did, in terms of mods or added technical stuff (shaker motor, for example...), that caused these boards to "pop", as you say? I guess what I'm getting at is this: was it honestly your fault, or is/was it just bad stuff from the factory?
