Figures... The banana plastic isn't broken in this game.
Make sure to read through Vid's guide on cleaning and waxing playfields.
What's funny is that there is actually a good amount of parts that are still salvageable. Just quickly here are a few:
Side rails
Lock bar receiver
Wireforms/habitrails
A few plastics
Lane guides
Plastic star posts
Those plastic dome covers
Ball trough
Maybe some coils
Hell, even the legs look like they could be sanded and painted
Of course some things may be cracked or rusty etc, but I think those parts are still useable if refurbed.
Quoted from CaptainNeo:hey look at that. Stargate saved the day by holding up the entire building. Because Gottlieb system 3's are built like brick shithouses. Built better than anyone else.
TOUGH AS HELL. Gottlieb system 3's are super tall too haha
Quoted from sevenrites:Not mine, thankfully but here's an X Files
I think this can be said for nearly everyone. No truer words have been spoken.

One of my favorites off a EBDLE.
Notice the attempt to repaint the pistol grips, but nothing else.
The surprising thing is the top of the rollover lanes was magically unblemished!
I could not figure out why this was the case because there was no mylar.
My guess was this playfield was improperly factory prepared for ink screening and lacquering.
Compare this to my EBD Classic 32+ year old playfield today.

Sorry, I cannot help it, before I head to work.
Some of the funniest Xenon repaints I ever saw.
The last photo with the tree branches growing out of her head, giant google eyes, and buck teeth is classic.
I should have taken a better photo.
I had to turn away and wince when I saw the game as to not upset the owner.
"Nice game."

Scrolling through them is like slow torture ,
Wish id taken a shot of a Pinball Pool I wrecked, that had about 25% of the paint left.
Im crying with laughter from those Zenon pics . The first one looks cross eyed too...
Not as disastrous as the other examples here, but this one made it into my home. It's the underside of a Dr. Who, my first (and last) container pin. I had only been given some basic pics of the top side before I made the overseas deal. It looked pretty decent up until then... but when I got it home and lifted the PF, my heart sunk. Lucky for me the seller took it back (in trade for another). Lesson learned. Buy your pins in person.

Ouch! Great to hear that the seller was willing to work with you to get something else, but that is just awful!

For some reason I'm more bothered by the different color flippers.
Wow, never thought I'd see a Cactus Canyon show up on this thread... How sad... I feel like I should light a candle and write a eulogy. I'm surprised the lockdown receiver isn't as rusty as the pinballs.

I am wondering if it is that one from italy where someone redid the side art.
That's a shame about that Cactus Canyon. I'll buy it from you and take care of it. You don't want that.
Here is my contribution. It was sitting outside under a tarp at a salvage yard. Notice the mouse home in the head and the cabinet bottom leaning on the wall. The amazing part is I was able to get it to boot up after twenty minutes of repairs. No battery damage to board since the head was stored down (though that allowed the mice in)

I bought the Cactus Canyon from a cat hoarders estate. The air in the house was rife with ammonia,so it rusted unprotected metal.I completely removed all of the metal parts and replaced or reconditioned them. The game was in fabulous condition otherwise and theres no need for a eulogy as it's currently back in action at Cbar in Portland. Here are a couple of pics of the machine after I got done with it.
Wow, this thread is stunning in a terrible way. Pretty painful to read (I haven't quite made it the whole way through page 1 yet). Glad some people were able to restore some of the machines!! Time to keep on digging...
Notice the rubbers for the lanes were coated with orange on that Cactus Canyon from the balls. Someone had been playing that rusty nightmare.
Congrats on the find and restoration!

"An old employee of ours was at the local scrap yard and noticed this Gottlieb Super Mario had been dropped off a few trucks ahead of him. He tried to buy it and we even called the yard and they said due to regulations it could not be sold! So another one gone. It's amazing how some people don't understand value!"

Ugh, that's awful. I would've been tempted to sneak back in, lol
Those "regulations" are just in place so that the scrap yard can get the scrap value out of it. I would've been more than happy to pay them more than its scrap value.
It boggles my mind the way some people today think something like this is worthless.

Ahhh I don't know if it's just me but I NEVER see newer Gottlieb's... I always see them smashed or broken... such low productions runs and so much neglect!

I've played that MB. It's been that way for years. I'm a little surprised that you posted a second game. The really sad thing is that Flipper McCoys was a great place to play pinball in the seventies and into the early eighties. I remember playing brand new copies of many of the hot games of the period. I'm pretty sure that I played my first Gorgar, Black Knight, and Haunted House games there. They still had some cool EMs in the lineup, too.
I totally stole this from o-din in the "replacement GB playfield ghosting" thread

I almost bought that machine. I'm still contemplating it.
Quoted from sohchx:I almost bought that machine. I'm still contemplating it.
Mold is serious. I wouldn't touch it. I can't imagine what it must look like on the inside of the cabinet.
Plus, there are some serious cosmetic issues, not to mention that the mold has probably damaged the artwork beyond that.
For what it is, the price ($385, I think it was?) is bonkers.
If you want that particular title, there are plenty to choose from. If you just want a cheap project pin, there are others to be had.

I wouldn't touch it either. Mold is truly serious... it wouldn't take but one spot you didn't kill to not only eventually undo whatever restoration work you do, but potentially contaminate the house to the point you've got professionals tearing out walls and putting up plastic and displacing you for weeks while they kill it. Best case, that playfield is unusable (odds are the wood under the mold is softened and ruined) and makes the machine only usable as a parts donor.
