I recently took a trip to Las Vegas with my wife. The thing I was most excited to see in Vegas was the Pinball hall of fame. I also knew there was a line-up of new Sterns at New York New York and I wanted to check that place out as well. One place I was very impressed by, the other….not so much. Here is my quick review on the two spots for anyone taking a trip to Vegas and looking for some pinball.

    New York New York
While my wife was playing some Pai Gow at New York New York, I wandered upstairs to the arcade and had a chance to play for a while. I was immediately impressed by the wall of ten newer Sterns. They had Met Pro, X-men Pro, Transformers LE, ST Premium, Mustang Pro, TWD Pro, Iron Man VE, Avatar Pro, AC/DC Pro, and Wrestlemania Pro. Most of, if not all of the machines had mods. TWD pro was a refinery edition. All of the games were VERY clean. All of the games that I played were level and had no issues at all. The all pretty much looked brand new and played like a dream. Hats off to whoever takes care of these machines, they do an excellent job.

    Pinball Hall of Fame
My wife and I took a cab over to the Pinball Hall of Fame. Don’t get me wrong, this place is still worth seeing, I was just hoping for so much more. There are a ton of machines here and some VERY rare games such as Pinball Circus and Goin Nuts. I was bummed out by just about everything here though. Almost every game I played had an issue. Most games are unlevel. IJ4 was so unlevel, that the game was unplayable. There is no signage on the building except for a banner. I would expect at least a nice lit sign. The floor is concrete. There is a corner inside the building with non-working games. It is sectioned off with “caution” tape. The workshop with bins containing parts is right out in the open. These areas should not be visible to the public. It would be nice to see a wall thrown up there. There are hand written note cards in ball point pen on the aprons of some machines with “fun facts”. It wouldn’t be too hard to type these up and make them look nice. One of the guys working there was wearing an orange vest with the word “STAFF” written on the back by maybe a 5-6 year old. Hell, I’d donate $10 so he could get a custom T-Shirt made. I could go on and on, but needless to say, my wife and I were disappointed. We both left well before we planned to leave. As we walked away, we both agreed it just depressing to see such an awesome collection not represented as well as it could be.

All in all, I had a great time playing some pins in Vegas. I had a chance to play some games that most people will never get to play. The next time I go there, I will be staying at New York New York. The hotel is awesome and the pins there are the icing on the cake. I don’t plan on visiting the PHOF again though. Here’s a couple pics. Not sure why my wife decided to play Rollercoaster Tycoon with all the other available choices!

Lol, is the Corvette in the Stern row because they don't have Mustang? Edit: I guess they have Mustang now

That's the other thing that was strange. Why not put all of the games in the "correct" groups?

    #4 8 years ago

    Could not agree more.

    #5 8 years ago

I'm headed there Sunday, will definitely head over to NYNY since we are staying right behind the MGM.

    #6 8 years ago

That NYNY pinball area is hot! Maybe I'll actually leave Downtown for once...

    #7 8 years ago

I went to to check out the pins at NYNY last night and I have to say that they are really, really nice. Played TWD, MET and ST. However, I don't think I'll be going back.

Couple of "you're at a casino" things that bug the crap out of me - card readers instead of taking coins or bills, all games are $1, no 3 games for $2 and the worst part is there is no replay. No winning games? I specifically went to check this out and zone out for a while and ended up just being disappointed. I need to remember this is vegas, it's all about separating you from your money.

TWD played well but I think it has superbands on it so there are a bunch of shots that normally come back to a flipper now go STDM because of the post super bands or whatever, the game looks great but the superbands kill it for me.
MET was great, but I had some good scores - no replay. what is up with that?

    #8 8 years ago

I do agree about the replay. That drove me nuts and honestly is why I didn't stay and play longer. My whole goal when playing on location is trying to get a replay, if there is no goal what's the point? I would have pumped in more $$$ if there was an attainable goal.

The card reader didn't bother me. I actually liked it. It's easier to swipe a card and there was no up front cost for the card like some places that charge $2. Yeah there was no 3 for $2, but hell, it is Vegas and those aren't cheap games.

    #9 8 years ago

I was there this summer, didn't know about NYNY or I'd have camped out there.

As for the PHOF some of the games were in horrible shape, and should have been turned off. For example T2 can not load the cannon, that's kind of a big deal. Other games the sling shots didn't work at all.

It was nice that a few of the games at PHOF were in good working order, but at least half were not.

    #10 8 years ago

    double post - sorry

    #11 8 years ago

I played $20 in 1 hr at NYNY, I played 4 hours for $15 at PHOF

There were some games hurt but overall I had a much better time. Got on the board on Kiss, won games on others. The guys there do work their butts off to keep that place running. I don't know how Tim does it, he looks tired, but he was there working on an EM to get it out on the floor. I made sure that I told him "Thank You" before I left. I don't know how he does it....

    #12 8 years ago

I was at the PHoF over the summer and it seemed there were some machines that had minor problems... As far as the floor layout goes, it will probably never change. Tim is set in his ways and he doesn't take kindly to helpful ideas about the PHoF. After having a brief conversation with him, Tim seemed to be burned out and tired. Hopefully, there will be more volunteers to help him with the machines. The PHoF is a great place to visit, but don't go there expecting to "talk pinball" with Tim. It's amazing they can keep all of those machines working most of the time... We're all lucky to have access to such a great collection of machines...

    #13 8 years ago

When I talked to Tim, he said that he is working on opening an even bigger location next door (3x as big!!!) so he could bring down more of his collection which would be insane - he must have around 500 machines as his house. I'm sure that will be a ways off. I went back for one more visit before we came home on Sunday. Problem machines from my first visit on Thursday were addressed, though some others were now off - ST left flipper was fixed, SS was up and running, AFM was off, HH was up and running.

I exclusively used Uber to get to and from PHOF and was very happy with the price and service- about $10-12 from the strip to PHOF and around $10 back

I was in Vegas for the past several days and spent most of my time in the PHOF. Granted a lot of the games had a small issue here and there. You would almost have to expect that with these games being of all ages and getting played a lot. (The place was busier then I thought it was going to be by some of what I read on pinside)
I think Tim and his volunteers do a pretty good job under the circumstances. If I lived around there, I would gladly be a volunteer. Best part about the PHOF? I only lost seven bucks gambling, because most of my time was spent playing pinball @ the PHOF.

I just got back from Vegas, I went to the Hall of fame a two times during the daytime. There was many games with ColorDMD that I had not seen in person before, very cool. I played a bunch of games I had not played before (Tron, IM, GOT to name a few).
Some of the game didn't live up to the hype. Maybe I just had one bad game on it or something was not working on the game and I moved on. The games that I had the most fun playing were MM, MB, MET, CC, TAF, TZ, and Tron. There were other games that I enjoyed but I can't list them all. Will go again for sure.

Has anyone ever suggested to Tim Arnold to maybe hire a couple of full time Techs and get those games working properly? I went a bit ago and it seemed that most of the games that I wished to play were in poor playing condition. I still enjoyed myself and played a few games but 50% of the games I put money in I walked away from. Was frustrating cuz a lot of the games I wanted to play. I know it's non profit and all but I really think that if he hired some full time Techs that the playability of the games would offset the Techs pay. I would think they would make more money for him to donate to the Salvation Army then not having them. There was quite a few players in there playing. I don't mean this as a dig in any way to the PHOF. I had a blast still looking at a lot of the rare games and not so rare. I know that it is a lot of work to upkeep that many games.

Yes. But won't happen. Non-profit charter means no pay for any employees. He will provide a place to stay, food and even laundry money. But nothing else. Sign me up. I don't even go there anymore when I'm in town.

At least he wised-up and took back his ludicrous "We choose to not buy new Stern pinballs for the PHoF" position.

    other Non-profits have payed employees.

    #23 8 years ago

Yeah I am not sure of the legalities but I know some non profits do pay employees. Thats why I posed the question. Is there different types of non profits? ie is Non profit Charter different then just being non profit?

    #24 8 years ago

Just got back from 6 days in Vegas and Jordan Spieth killing me....

Long story, short, my wife and I stayed at NYNY for the sole purpose of me getting my pinball on and I was blown away. All of the latest pins with every mod you would dream of.... Shaker moter, toppers, under cab lights, latest in LEDS...all played like they were NIB. The operator is also a very nice guy.

Played so many games that my wrists are gonna need a rest before PAGG.

Not sure what a non profit charter is, but if you're talking about a non profict organization, say a 501 c 3 organization, they absolutely can pay their employees. I've never heard of a non profit not paying employees. Yeah sure, lots of them have volunteers, but most have paid employees as well.

    #26 8 years ago

Yes, PHoF is a 501 c3 non-profit. Tim's charter is that "No one gets paid anything". He had it written on a tax form IIRC. It was posted on the 'net. So it is Tim's rule that no one gets paid from the money taken in. Sorry for the confusing misstatement.

When The Hippie worked there, Tim paid him from personal funds, not the money that came into the coin slots.

Haven't heard that name in years

My guess is that wouldn't go well no matter what

Sorry to say, but that stinks cause he could've kept the place and paid some dudes to help.

Believe me, I agree with you. As I mentioned, I don't bother going anymore. Maybe I'll stop in to take pictures of the Triple X and buy a gumball to help "the cause".

Stopped in last week for an hour or so to play the Williams Triple X (two player version of OXO) and a few others I've never played before.

Wow, cant believe I never stumbled upon this thread before now! I am the tech at the NY-NY arcade, thanks for all the kind words!
FYI, yes, replay and match percentages are set low, but not turned off... And not my decision.

Makes total sense to me. If people want the newest games in excellent condition with all the mods, there has to be some compromise. A more challenging replay is fine with me! I'll be there in a couple weeks and can't wait to check them out!

I was there in July and it was well worth my time too!

I remarked to my wife that it must be quite a feat to keep the games as well maintained as they are given how heavily they are played (seriously folks, they look and play as good as new, if not better), so it's great to have the opportunity to personally thank the individual responsible for them. I also appreciate that your GB in particular was so well dialed-in, because I now have the enthusiastic green light to get one. Finally, the overall presentation of the line up as well as the mods really shows the games in their best light, which also helps boost the WAF (wife acceptance factor).

So thanks, and keep up the great work and attention to detail!

Keep doing what you're doing. Low replays and matches are a small price to pay for machines in such wonderful shape.

I am not a gambler, but attend quite a few car auctions in Vegas and always stop to play your well-maintained collection.

So here's a question for you:

I was there a couple of years ago and there were no pins in the arcade from what I recall. So, going from zero pins to 10 brand new ones, some with more than the basic arcade stock options, makes me wonder what made the operator/owner decide to make this change. I find it really interesting and would love to hear the story behind it, if you can share.

Hi, I'm the arcade revenue share operator in The Big Apple Coaster & Arcade at NYNY. I own and operate the bank of 10 pinballs, as well as another 10 deluxe arcade games throughout the arcade.

The story is that about 2 years ago, I bought two pinball machines for my arcade route (Star Trek & Metallica) and instantly got addicted to pinball. Especially modding them. I had already owned a South Park, but this new stuff blew my mind. Since I had both time and money, and an OCD personality, I immersed myself into everything pinball. I have purchased roughly 42-43 games since.

So here I am, being in the arcade business, and having all of these great pinball machines. I immediately began to see both the revenue potential and overall improvement in the arcade and roller coaster guest's experience with an impressive pinball attraction. So I assembled a proposal and I pitched the concept to the management and executives of the property. They liked the idea, we inked a deal, and I rolled em' in.

Now then. Just 2 days ago, I opened my own arcade in downtown Las Vegas. Fremont Arcade is located inside Neonopolis at the end of the Fremont Street Experience canopy, just behind Denny's. In it we feature 16 pinball machines, as well as many other arcade games. See my post earlier today announcing our opening as well as on the Pin Map application above. Just search Las Vegas.

I was in Vegas two weeks ago... but rarely left the Star Trek Convention.
I'll have to remember this if we go back for STNG's 30th next year.

    Thanks for the info, Larry!
Your OCD is truly appreciated by some of us.
I will be there in two weeks for the CTIA show, I plan on visiting your new location downtown.
If the pins at the new location are anything like NYNY, I imagine it will be successful as well.
