I have no doubt the prototypes cost $12K each. Build two of anything and the cost is incredibly high.

Back then, PC was going to cost the distributors $1000 more than a standard pin, which would put the retail price somewhere in the $4000-4500 range. Anyone know how much distributors were paying for pins in the 90's?

$12K in parts? Not likely, IMHO.

'without an equal or equivalent' (as a pin, PC has no equals)

'unusual or extraordinary' (PC certainly is unusual)
