Thinking of opening an arcade? Already got one? I'm seeing a lot of hand-wringing over how to turn pinball into money. One thing to consider is the fact that pinball has an awesome PULL (coolness factor) but relatively little PUSH (direct financial return as a stand-alone investment).

The most successful businesses tend to leverage the allure of pinball to push other products (beer, t-shirts, admission, swag, etc). That is, unless you're the Pinball Hall of Fame, because Vegas guarantees a high volume of worldwide visitors around the clock... all of those quarters really add up.

However, since most of us aren't Vegas, consider this win-win marketing approach:

Ask your local businesses to provide gift cards for your pinball game show event. No additional cost, just the cards. Promote your event on FB/IG/Twitter/your site and tag them as sponsors. Then photograph each winner and tag the associated business which awarded the prize, posting the photo to your site and their site (and ideally take one with the winner's phone so they can also post it to their own site).

It turns your visitors into players, boosts local businesses around you, gets more people in your front door, and raises the pinball excitement factor by several notches. All you have to do is come up with some creative contests and let everyone have a good time competing with one another.

Anyone doing anything like this? I'm working on making it a regular thing at Roanoke Pinball. So far, people are really digging it. The pinball experience is now a "whole room social/economic thrill ride" which REALLY gets people going!
