Location play is definitely on the up-swing in the last few years. In the bay area there are still tons of "bad" places, but also a lot of "playable" and "excellent" venues.

I was at Gestalt in SF last night and there were eight games in great shape getting lots of play, including a Space Shuttle that played like new. Initially I balked at 75 cents per game but it was on 5-ball and playing beautifully.

    Quoted from KenLayton:

There's the drawback at that location: card readers. I hate those things with a passion!

I'm not a huge fan of Cards, myself, but they are the "it" thing and what a lot of Arcades are doing today. I saw it as early as the 90's. They mix the classic arcade play with redemption play. In Casinos, it's all cards, for example, now. Like it or not, it's here to stay. If they've work pinball into the mix, I'm alright with that.
