Quoted from Jackontherocks:
Is it ok to switch from different brands in one night or do most prefer to stick to just one bottle if having more than one glass? Just curious what you all do and think about it. I have done both at times but think it might be best to stick to one kind but not entirely sure. I feel if I switch I don’t get the true taste of a glass in the bottle.
I prefer multiple smaller pours. I also like to stay within a distiller for the evening (all Buffalo Trace, or all heavenhill, or all XXXXX) as I think it is fun to compare and develop my taste to see what I like.
It then makes it fun to hunt based on those taste profiles I like.
For example, I find I tend to like 8-15 year old bourbon, w 12 being a sweet spot in many cases.
I dont like the high proof stuff as much as many do. It is good but the hug can be too long for me, so I tend to focus on 90-105 proof.
I dont like the cheery, sherry, etc... finished stuff in most cases. Again, a nice change but I prefer the good old classic.
When I find a mash bill I like, then it is fun to hunt out those other similar ones and really dig in to see how stuff is different.
I really enjoy doing a vertical.
One of my favorite experiences was going to a bar (before this was really so popular) and we did a vertical of Pappy. 1.5oz pour of the 10, 12, 15, 20, and 23, and Saz. Line up all up and sip to see what you liked best
That said, everyone has different methods and also different pallets so to me it can be really fun to learn what others enjoy.
