Haven’t posted on this thread yet but have a question for all you bourbon sommeliers.

I’ve recently become “obsessed” with making Manhattans and wonder if you guys have any recommendations for the best bourbon to use to make a mean Manhattan that won’t break the bank.

    Quoted from HFK:

If by mean you are trying to say high proof and you seek inexpensive you can't go wrong with Wild Turkey 101 right around $20 and Costco's bourbon is 103 and mixes really well for $30.

I do love me some wild turkey, but wasn't concerned about the proof so much as a nice bourbon that mixes well without overpowering.
Again I am new to making manhattans so still in the “discovery” phase of making them appropriately.
I should also note that I’m using Carpano Antica Formula vermouth, Angostura aromatic bitters and some Wiggle pomander Orange bitters.

Thank you for these two recommendations guys! Putting them in my shopping list!

    Quoted from Daditude:

Fun fact: Wine has sommeliers (I am a certified sommelier), bourbon has stewards.
As far as your question goes, it depends if you want your manhattan sweet, spicy, or balanced. Which do you typically enjoy?

I’m still a novice when I comes to the different “types” but based on my other likes I’d probably want my manhattan to be on the spicy side.
And thanks for the fun fact! Steward is definitely easier to spell/say! Hahahaha.

    Quoted from tuffano:

My Manhattans made a turn for the better when I switched to Antica sweet vermouth. I was using sweet Martini and Rossi before. Like mentioned above pick up Rye and give that a try. I’ve liked sagamore, redemption, and high west ryes. Also this may be taboo for some, but High West 36th Vote Barreled Manhattan is a pre-mixed Manhattan that I’ve had a few bottles of and really enjoy it if you happen to see it in the store.

I will have to try that High West rye. I like their bourbon and have had a couple bottles over the past few years.

Newest bourbon I discovered and absolutely love is Heaven’s Door. Love sipping it neat.
I think bob dylan is part owner.
