Any recommendations for my next bottle... I'm a newbie. Started a after reading this thread. Shot and a half with an ice cube before bed and I sleep very well.

Started with Makers and really liked it. Second bottle was Beam Black which I didn't enjoy nearly as much.

I have a bottle of Evan Williams single barrel waiting.

Not really a fan of this one. Might be something to do with not have an ice cube.. too lazy to go looking for the hotel ice maker.

    Quoted from egyptrus:

This might be the single worst bourbon I've ever tried to drink. I do a bourbon swap with a co-worker on the east coast whenever we have a team meeting and I brought this for her without first trying it. When I bought the bottle for her, I bought one for myself. After returning from my trip, I gave it a try - terrible. I then called her to see if she had tried it. She danced around describing it so I finally said "it was terrible, right?" She agreed that it was awful. I contacted central standard afterward to let them know the batch/bottle number in case there were other complaints. I never heard from them.
This is the one and only bottle I've ever poured down the drain. It was undrinkable and I would never push it on to a guest.
So no, the lack of an ice cube isn't what made it bad - it's just bad.
    Dave

I'd call it the skunky beer of Bourbons.

    #723 5 years ago
    Quoted from egyptrus:

That's pretty appropriate. It doesn't smell good (sort of a turpentine type smell) and it finishes with some very odd flavor/notes that don't seem to be bourbon-like. The one redeeming quality of central standard is the shirt I got from them when I visited their distillery. It says "bourbon made me do it". I thought that was funny and bourbon has been involved in a few decisions. Thought about wearing it to MGC today but went for the Milwaukee Brewing Co instead. Oddly enough, Milwaukee Brewing is right next door to central standard. So go to Milwaukee brewing for their beer and then go to central standard for the bourbon shirt.
    Dave

I think their barrels were tainted. Maybe presoaked in turpentine. The smell was equally as bad

I left that bottle of crap in the hotel room... Maybe the cleaning crew will like it. Sitting down and having some Kirkland bourbon after a long weekend at MGC.

    Ginning this one a try.

    Quoted from New_England:

Vermont has a rare bourbon lottery to allocate certain products. I wanted one of the Pappy’s, but entered all of the drawings for shits and giggles.
Ended up with the Glenmorangie Alta for $99.99. While I was there I spotted the Elijah Craig small batch cask strength for $56.99 behind the shelf and the Glenlivet 12 was $78.99 (normally $84.99).
There was an empty row of Four Roses single barrel. Guess I didn’t get to the store in time. Would have been nice to have that one too. Prices are pretty rough in Vermont and we don’t have nearly the selection as most, but I make due.
    [quoted image]

Geez... Pretty sure that I bought that Elijah Craig from Costco not long ago. I asked picked up some Four Roses while in FL last week, I've seen that around here plenty so I did not stock up.

    #844 4 years ago
    Quoted from New_England:

I just wish our Costco would carry liquor. I’ve done alcohol exchanges with Pinsiders in the past. I’m certainly open to trades if anyone can ever find me some bottles I can’t find in Vermont.

I'll watch for Elijah Craig when I go tomorrow.

    #849 4 years ago

Got this one from Costco today.

They had a ton of that Elijah Craig small batch.

I will admit... Makers was an early favorite and I have not gone back to it since. Old Forester 1920 is my current favorite.

    Quoted from Chisox:

This double oaked gem is really good. Brown sugar with some nice wood (that’s what she said). Not quite up to the 1920 but it’s a good buy if you can find it.
    [quoted image]

How many different 1xxx does Old Forester have? I got 1920, here is 1910, I thought I saw a 18xx here too.

    #961 4 years ago
    Quoted from Chisox:

I know they have the original 1870 (good), the 1897 bottled in bond (tasty), 1910 and 1920(outstanding) They also have the Statesman which was pretty good. I think there’s a couple more too. And their new rye is fantastic for $25. They’re on a roll.

So is it safe to assume that of I find a bottle of Old Forester anything that I should buy it?

    #972 4 years ago

I leave my bottles in the open where there is plenty of sunlight. Should I put them in the cabinet away from the sun? I don't tend to collect too many bottles but I make get there someday.

2nd pic, lower right hand side Evan Williams single barrel $21 is on the shelf at my local Total Wine for $32
reviews are mixed between 'best stuff ever!' and 'its ok' but I would be tempted to try it

I've picked up that Evan Williams from our local Costco as well. I would say it was OK. Liking the Old Forester better.

    #1032 4 years ago
    Quoted from Chisox:

That’s Old Ezra 7 year and would be the first thing I’d grab off these shelves. It’s damn good. I’d also grab a bottle of that WT Rare Breed because I love Wild Turkey products.

I was tempted to try the Old Forester Statesman... May have to stop back there for that one sometime soon (it is on my way home from work afterall).

This was the selection at the local Costco today. The buffalo trace and eagle rare were limited to one per customer. I bought one of each. Went by the area one more time before leaving and the eagle rare was gone. That didn’t take long.[quoted image][quoted image]

Going to have to stop on the way home. We'll see if the Germantown Costco has the same selection.

    #1495 4 years ago
    Quoted from egyptrus:

kcz I hope your Costco got a batch of bourbon like mine did.

    It did not

    #1498 4 years ago
    Quoted from egyptrus:

Sorry to hear that. I think I got lucky today going when I did. I'm guessing they didn't get a lot of the eagle rare. When I grabbed mine there were 4 on the shelf. They had a few more of the buffalo trace but it was still pretty limited. I'm wondering if your local costco also got an 'allotment' but it was gone before you got there.

I check the Germantown Costco quite regularly and they have never had anything different. Maybe time to switch things up to Pewaukee.

    #2628 4 years ago
    Quoted from Grandnational007:

I've enjoyed the left on quite a few occasions, the middle once, and the right a few times at tastings/bottle shares.
For the $, the left isn't bad; the middle wasn't my cup of tea; and the right is too rich for my blood, considering what it is, (MGP juice, no different than the Smooth Ambler that used to sell for $45 a few years back...) and was just "ok" to my palette.
That said, Michter's US-1 is pretty good for the money ($45), is a maple syrup bomb, punches above it's weight class and hold's its own against much costlier competitors, and is very similar to the WP10.
Unless it's a THH or a Saz18, I'm out of my comfort zone spending much more than $40 for ANY rye. YMMV.

Michter's US-1 is great stuff. I'm afraid to open my bottle as the last one disappeared quite quickly and it took me awhile to find another although I think that I may have a good steady source for that one now.

I've seen a bunch of Peerless Rye on my last run. Is that the stuff that everyone has been looking for it seemed to range from 75-90 bucks.

Tasty. definitely notice some corn flavor and spice. That corn sticks around for awhile. There was more on the shelf if anyone wants to do a trade. I think it was mid $60s cost.

    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Holy crap did you go out looting last night?

    Quoted from Whysnow:

Is this multiple stops or just one hole?

Several stops but found a couple really good spots. Old Fitzgerald, on the shelf for 99.99. Belle Meade, the Smokewagons and they gave me 10% off.

Then the Old Elk single barrel with those elk head pourer will be a great addition to the liquor cabinet. My phone was buzzing constantly with friends wanting that, I walked out with two cases.

Found a bottle of OF Birthday Bourbon, nearly had to walk back in to buy it for a friend at $400 but that markup was a bit hard to stomach. Oh, that same store had about 10 bottles of Old Fitz for $300 per

    #6261 3 years ago
    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Can't believe you found Old Fitz on the shelf for $100. Do they have anymore?

Nope. I had someone ask me if I really wanted it cause he drove an hour to get it. I replied that I've been looking for it... Left out the fact that I was a couple hours in.

I also got 10% off on it from buying a ton of other stuff.

My first pour of Smokewagon Uncut. It's good but I think that I prefer the small batch.

    Quoted from DBLM:

    Gents,
Sadly just after my tasting last night, I got word that my dad took a critical turn for the worse. After straightening myself up from the tasting, had to drive 3 hours plus each way to visit and to say goodbyes. At some point over the next few days, we are going to reach a natural conclusion after care is stopped. There are a lot of moving pieces right now, and sadly COVID adds factors of complexity.
This is a long way around the horn to say I may or may not be able to join the Zoom tomorrow night. Please go ahead with everything and if nothing else, I will do a tasting like I did last night sometime soon. I will be glad to send you guys my Zoom info so that you can run with things. I am in a very good place with everything, so all is well. Did not mean to be a bummer, but did want to give a quick explanation. Big thanks to bowz for the samples. If I can't make it tomorrow night, I definitely look forward to the next one.
    All the best,

Going to have a lot of time in the coming months but really should not buy too much for myself so I need to find more to buyers in order to continue (I do have fun making these runs).

You've seen my hauls. I have a group of about 6 guys that I buy for. I send them pics from the liquor store and start taking orders, is how it has been working. Ok, had some time to label and pour 4 of the 5 samples i intend to send out. Tried to pick stuff I had not heard people talk about.
For the fifth pick, I am racking my brain. Trying to decide if I send you something wild (will have to go search for it) a rye (I am actually liking some of the ryes out there better now then a lot of the bourbons available) or something not even bourbon related (I have tequilas that are much tastier than any of my bourbons). Did not want to send something like the Knob Creek 25th (which is tremendous, but I know we have some anti KC folks). Any suggestions from the peanut gallery?

    Quoted from Green-Machine:

Pinball question! I noticed last night that my flipper was dragging on the playfield of my GotG. Coil stop is good but noticed a lot of movement in the plunger of the coil allowing the flipper to move up and down, maybe an 1/8 of inch movement. I made some adjustments and made sure all was tight but nothing seem to help. Maybe a bad coil sleeve!? Any thoughts from you guys

check out vid's guide to flipper rebuilds.

Personally, I would pull it apart and inspect the parts. If all is well then reassemble with the proper gap (credit card thickness) between the flipper and the playfield.

    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Did you end up trying any of that EC toasted barrel yet?

I did. It's fine, middle of the pack for me but it cost more than most of the other middle of the pack bourbons. Worth getting once but I don't feel like I need another bottle.

    #7626 3 years ago
    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

I figured that was the case. What about that new batch 14 stagg jr? I've been watching a few youtube videos and it's not rating thaf high. I'm still going to try it cause i've had every batch except 1 and 2.

I thought 14 was tasty. Will try it against 13 when I return home.

Next pour for the night is some John J Bowman, I heard it is a better substitute for Elmer T Lee which I've not been able to find. I do pick up a hint of chocolate but not too much like the Woodford Master Collection that I sampled this past weekend.

    $50ish... Good buy, IMHO

    Quoted from DBLM:

chisox said we can’t sit on bottles so let’s jump on this bad boy! Big, big thanks to pindelapin for hooking me up on this.. I even poured it in a Norland glass since the mean folks on reddit made fun of my solo cups. At 1.3 pounds, that is a solid glass.
Quick notes: Smells like a very smooth Bookers. Tasting notes on the tag are brown sugar, burnt wood, and cherries. I buy all of that. Very smooth, medium finish. Fantastic bourbon. I will have to compare it with Little Book 2 but from recollection, I would put this behind the 2. That is not a put down at all and speaks to how good Little Book 2 is.
    [quoted image]

I got Chapter 2, stop over and we can compare

    #8344 3 years ago
    Quoted from Chisox:

Still on the prowl for one. I’ve heard many people who’s palettes I trust say that it’s fantastico.

Grabbed it from one of my favorites south of the WI/IL border. I almost passed it up but I recalled someone on here posted it. This is the same store that I bought Old Fitzgerald for $90 so I figured this may be worth buying as well.

    Quoted from beergut666:

Let me know what you think of that Bomberger's, you are the only other person I know that has one. I'm quite enjoying mine.

    Quoted from DBLM:

I have heard so many people hype this but have not tried it. Magnus is based out of DC so it can be found around here. Can you share your thoughts?

Now I feel in the spot... LoL.

It is very complex. I don't pick up too much on the spice but I do taste some sugar cookie. I get different flavors each sip, some fruity.

It's improving in my opinion now that you've made me think about it more.

    #8380 3 years ago
    Quoted from jsalce:

I'm with you on the Murray Hill, for the price I was a bit underwhelmed. I would much prefer Joseph Magnus's flagship.

That's the thing... I've wanted Joseph Magnus but couldn't stomach the price since I've never heard anything about it. Then on one of my runs a friend said Murray Hill was good stuff and when I saw it was from Joseph Magnus, I bought. Now I'll have to try Joseph Magnus.

    #8427 3 years ago

I've had this one a few times before but this time I taste a lot of carmel. I don't normally taste carmel but it seems over powering this time around.
