Looking to dive into the bourbon world a little deeper. Currently I know very little about all things bourbon. I used to drink a lot of Jim Beam years ago. Then 4-5 years I switched to Crown. Finally last year I switched to Bulleit. However I always mix it. Usually with Mountain Dew or Pepsi (I know, don’t kill me!).

I’m ready to try some on the rocks, and maybe even try it neat. Without spending a fortune, what would be a good bourbon to dive in to? I’ve had a few people recommend McKenna to me.

    Thoughts/advice?

On December 18th, I have the opportunity to attend a bourbon pairing dinner which includes the following. Worth it?

    The Dinner will include:

    Limited seating for 12 guests
4 Course dinner with welcome cocktail and appetizer
3 Exclusive Bourbon selections from our private stash to pair with your meal
Bourbon selections will include Pappy VanWinkle, Bookers “Noe Secret”, Barterhouse and more
    $165 per ticket.

During lunch today I was reading up on bourbon and stumbled upon this new bourbon made from Mongolian Oak that is slated to come out any day now. Figured I would share with everyone.

I popped open my very first bottle of Blanton’s yesterday. Good stuff!

Although I must say, the bottle of Dalmore 12 I picked up last week is getting more attention.

Sipping on Blanton’s while sous vide cooking some filet mignons.

    #409 5 years ago
    Quoted from Nokoro:

    Interesting. How is it?

It’s good. I make candied bacon with it, so good.

    #411 5 years ago
    Quoted from fuseholder:

It’s very nice, not too strong where it overwhelms the maple. Picked it up at Costco.
I’m going to try that with bacon.

Here is how I make the candied bacon. I buy Reynolds no stick aluminum foil and lay it down on a cookie sheet pan. Place bacon in strips on the foil, and bake at 350. Once the bacon is cooked about halfway, I pull it out, and then drizzle the syrup over the strips. Put it back in the oven to let it finish cooking and the syrup thickens right up.

Relatively new to the bourbon world, about 6 solid months under my belt. I’ve had Bulliet, Makers, Woodford, Blanton’s and maybe 1-2 more I can’t remember. Really enjoy Blanton’s. Stopped today to grab another bottle and noticed this sign, anything worthy and is anything grossly over priced?

On the job today installing tablets for their POS. Nice BBQ place with a healthy bourbon selection. That also told me they are having a bourbon tasting with management at 10 to pick a new Buffalo Trace single barrel exclusive and they said I could join in!

Daaaaamn. I didn't think it was possible for a place like that to exist outside of KY.

It’s in Delaware. And they have 2 locations. And once a month they have an exclusive bourbon tasting dinner for $150 a head. You get to sip on things like Pappy.

Stopped at a different liquor store tonight to pick up a bottle of Willett. While browsing the bourbons I stumbled across this one (see pic). Anyone had this bad boy? Worth the price tag?

Never bought this before. What’s a decent price to pay for this?

    #1108 4 years ago
    Quoted from boscokid:

Only you know how much 1k means to you. I don't think a $20 markup is that bad for someone else doing all the legwork. Blantons is about $63 at the absolute cheapest when you find it on the shelf, which is not often. My BIL found it at a boutique liquor store for $70 and happily paid that.
PA got a shipment a couple weeks ago - looked like 600 bottles total and you could watch it online as it hit the shelves in western PA and moved east. Probably 50% sold day 1, 80% day 2, then almost all gone on day 3. By day 4 it was really only available for licensees or random 1 off bottles in rural places too far to drive.
I grabbed two bottles a couple months ago from the West Grove store and the clerk remarked how lucky I was - apparently the same customer would come in and buy all 6 bottles every time their allotment arrived.

I got Blanton’s everywhere down here. Priced anywhere between $59-70. If you need some let me know.

    #1112 4 years ago

Help me help you! Never shipped alcohol before. I have no problem filling orders for people. What guidelines and legalities do I need to be concerned with? Once we figure this out I’ll gladly ship out requests.

    #1114 4 years ago

To all that inquired about Blanton's. Standby. I'm going to scoop up a couple of bottles this weekend and perform one shipping test with the first person who contacted me. If all goes well I will let everyone know.

Also, I just spoke to a liquor store owner who told me they ordered a private barrel of Blanton's. He will have it in 3 weeks. Has anyone ever heard of this? Is it 100% identical to Blanton's, but just re-labeled for his store?

    Quoted from TKDalumni:

    Did you get my reply?

    Yes

Also ypurchn will be the first guinea pig, followed by you.

    #1121 4 years ago

So, just for fun tonight I decided to stop in a few liquor stores on my hour long drive home from work. NOTE - none of these liquor stores are ones I ever go to. First time visits just to see their offerings. Here is what i discovered.

    Stop 1 - 2 bottles Blanton’s @ $69 each

    Stop 2 - 4 bottles Blanton’s @ $79. This place also has old forester 1920 prohibition, 2 @ $59 each

    Stop 3 - old forester 1920 prohibition, 6 bottles @ $59 each

    Stop 4 - 1 Blanton’s $69

Stop 5 - weller 107 for $150 (I’ve never seen this locally, mind you I’m new to the bourbon world, 6 months under my belt). So not sure if this price is high or low.

Haha you are not alone! Met my fiance 6 years ago on a dating site. When we setup our first date all of her friends were extremely worried because they couldn't find a single trace of me online. They told her something was odd because I didn't have FB, lol. Nothing was odd and all is well! Hell I never had myspace either. I have been on IRC for over 20 years though and still use it to this day.

I've not seen McKenna at any of the other 9 stores I visit.

    #1471 4 years ago
    Quoted from boscokid:

I can bring a bottle on Saturday if you want to try it. I have found it (in the last 3 months) at Premier on Limestone Rd $40 and Swigg on 202 for $36. Total Wine on Namaans had it in bulk last year for $32.
No chance I'm spending $100 for McKenna, would get 5 handles of Kentucky Gentleman @ $17 each and spend the change on aspirin and Wawa Sizzlis

I’ll pass on this Saturday, but thanks for the offer!

Now, if you are slated to come to the BBQ, then I’m down.

For only the second time in my short bourbon career, I walked into a store that has Weller Antique, with a price tag of $95. It's super scarce in Delaware. So is $95 way over the top?

How is that Noe Secret? A BBQ place near me has a special Private Stash Bourbon dinners where they offer you like 5-6 courses plus 5-6 bourbons. They serve Pappy 15 year, Noe Secret, Barterhouse, and a few others.

"The experience of a bourbon dinner is one that everyone should have—perfect for those well-versed in bourbon as well as novices, and everyone in between. Each dish will feature bourbon in both the culinary aspect and the hand pour. With five succulent courses, beginning with a charcuterie board and moving through to an oyster truffle chowder, and onto courses featuring duck and pork shank, the evening is crafted with every detail in mind."

    #2927 4 years ago

No no, I’m not paying $99 at all. I just know some people can’t get it at all. My one source has it for $59, although it’s scarce. My backup source always has 2-3 in stock at $69. I have a full bottle of Jr. that I just opened recently so I’m set for awhile.

Got this exact Ice ball maker, let it freeze for almost 2 days before I tried it for the first time and the balls looked correct and were crystal clear. Poured some bourbon over a ball, and after a few minutes the ball was “flaking”, and my drink became water logged fairly quickly and I don’t think that’s suppose to be the case. As for the glass, I was out doing a sales presentation to one of my Bourbon BBQ restaurants and the night before they had a Private Stash Bourbon dinner with one of the liquor reps on hand. He brought those glasses and they had some left over so the owner said I could have it. It is pretty sweet!

I mix it up. Probably straight 75% of the time. And yes, this "bourbon crush" is a nice spin off from the classic orange crush.

    #5445 3 years ago
    Quoted from Chisox:

I’ve never had one. Is it just a combo of the pictured ingredients? Bourbon, OJ, Sprite, Triple Sec etc?

    Tradition Orange Crush is:
    2 parts orange vodka
    1 part triple sex
    splash of sprite/7-up
Juice of one freshly squeezed orange

For a bourbon crush, just substitute your favorite bourbon for the vodka. In my picture, I had bottled juice, which I never use but I was out of oranges.

The Weller name alone causes bottles to fly off of shelves these days, so when the Buffalo Trace brand announces a new release, it should not be dismissed. The latest expression to join "The Original Wheated Bourbon" family is a single barrel release, the first in the Weller family outside of private barrel picks. The new Weller weighs in at 97 proof and is packaged in the standard Weller uniform with an orange label, cork topper, and gold foil to help set it apart from its siblings.

    Quoted from Green-Machine:

Anyone seeing Stagg jr popping up? I have never seen it here.

I can get it all day, can’t guarantee it’s the cheapest price, but access isn’t a problem.

Prices are definitely higher, but inventory isn’t an issue.

I got all the Stagg Jr in the world, you are just going to have to pay a premium for it if you really want it.

    Quoted from DBLM:

djreddog and bmore-pinball hope you guys are battened down, brothers. We are all set here. We are expecting about 5-6 inches of rain and a 2 foot storm surge. Of course, if it tracks to the east it could suck water out of the bay. We shall see.

Right back at you guys! It’s going to be pretty intense that’s for sure. Everyone stay safe and if you need any help let me know.

    #7239 3 years ago

2 tornadoes reported so far in Delaware. We have dodged them both. Hope everyone else is hanging in there.

    #7250 3 years ago
    Quoted from DBLM:

I have a tree and half down and a bunch of limbs but no damage. We are without power but on generator for now. All of the houses on the bay have well water, septic tanks, propane tanks, etc, because they are so far off the main “trunk” of infrastructure. We have one main road down our peninsula and evidently they have 3 wires down across it. Good news is they are working on it now.
The big thing to watch is high tide around 6 tonight. They are expecting it to be about 3 ft higher, so low lying places will flood. We also had a full moon last nigh, so tides are a good half a foot or so higher.

What does this weather do to the crabs? Do they hide or become more available to catch?

    #8283 3 years ago
    Quoted from Whysnow:

nope. Would defeat the purpose of being a secret if we did the draws on a live zoom
Just using random number generator with exclusions to pick for each person.

As mentioned I have plenty of access to both Staggs. Going rate in Delaware for GTS is between $350-500. Stagg JR, which I have plenty of access too as well usually goes for 89-99.

    Quoted from DBLM:

How did the Hot Toddy’s turn out? Cool setup you got outside.

I didn’t do the Hot Toddy’s last night. So still waiting to try that! We had some cider mulling spices so I made bourbon spiked hot apple cider instead for a couple of the ladies last night. I was drinking my bourbon neat.

Our kids are all 14 and older, too cool for family movie night, but I still like to entertain so I had 5-6 families that live on the block come down for 2 outdoor movies with the little kids. Social distancing with families of course. First movie was A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and second movie was Shrek the Halls.

Being the geek that I am I try and recreate the movie experience, so my movies last night included 20th century fox intros, MGM Lion, trailers, countdown clock, and some classic 70s movie snack bar commercials.

Saw my first COK in Delaware. 11.5 years. $129 decent or extremely high like usual in my state?

    Quoted from Jackontherocks:

New store opened right by my house, so of course new bottle. I tried Old Elk, bulliet cask strength, new High West one dark bottle and this Woodford won my vote as more oak. https://www.trevorsliquor.com/[quoted image]

I just grabbed me another bottle. This one is a good sipper for me.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

    what year is that GTS?
That seems like the only one in your pictures of 'value'
That is under typical secondary but double plus of retail ($149)
That would be the one worth buying IMHO if I was splurging

Not sure. How can I tell? Too rich for me either way.

Bourbon egg nog tonight. I was in the basement working and asked the Fiance to make one. Came up and she had used Stagg Jr

    Quoted from Chisox:

Fried rice! You going to do an onion volcano? I still clap like a 4 year old kid when they do that at hibachi places haha.

No volcano tonight. Just as I started to go outside it started to rain so I had to wheel out the big patio umbrella to keep me dry.

However, I can do a volcano for everyone at Crabfest 2021!!!

Daditude any possibility you could fill the group here in on exactly what the infraction was? Even better where is the line that lands you in pinside purgatory?

Even better, bring him back. I read the thread too, nothing out of line.
