Despite my big beer collection of about close to 10,000 or so beers labels from beers I have tried, I do love and have several different bottles of whiskey bourbon as well. Here is the last one I had on Friday night with a cigar. Always trying new ones and been posting them in the other drinking thread but will make sure to add them in here now.

    Quoted from Reality_Studio:

Tried this one on a whim because it's finished in port casks which I thought was interesting and unique. Pretty darned good! I didn't realize you could still call it bourbon even if it's finished in used casks of various types.
    [quoted image]

A lot of people like this one and tried to turn me onto it but too light in taste in my opinion and very much overrated

    #862 4 years ago
    Quoted from ypurchn:

had a pour of Angel's Envy Rye last night, OK ish. Very maple syrup tasting too me. It was off menu so idk the pricing when I ordered it, no way I would pay $25/pour again. regular angel's envy was listed $12/pour so I was expecting that or maybe a few $ more but not double+.
    hard sell at $80+/bottle IMO

    Agree overrated

    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

I've never had this stuff and it's only an 80 proof but was on closeout at the store for $13 a bottle so I grabbed a couple. Figured if nothing else I could pawn it off on guests who ask for a jack and coke.

I’m hosting a Bourbon tasting for a MS Fundraiser in a few weeks. 5 bourbons paired with 5 courses of food.
Anyone have any suggestions for 2 bourbons? Need one to pair with a smoked Gouda Mac and cheese. Preferably one with a buttery finish to compliment the cheese. And one for pulled pork sliders.
    Any thoughts?
Trying to stay away from the typical brands. I’ll be in KY this week and in 2 weeks. Need at least 3 bottles of the suggestion.

Widow Jane been a good one lately we all seem to like about $75 to $80 bucks.

I like High West alot....now that one is on the sweeter side, I did not 'love' it when I first opened it, but it has oxidised into a decent pour when you are in the mood for whisky and have a sweet tooth.

Have to disagree, tried many kinds and posted here always but Absolutely hated High West tried the blue label with rabbits to my memory, just light and not tasteful.

It’s the end of another bottle before the birthday tomorrow. I see others on here liked certain Old Forester but for me and one of my best friends we could not find any enjoyment or taste since we bought this one. Too light and just bland. Do t worry tomorrow we will find a good one for 42nd Bday.

Finally tried Kentucky Owl bourbon last night for my bday, it was $30 bucks a poor and I enjoyed it. Warmed me up inside. Also tried the green bottle label Weller I have seen on here which was $18 on the rocks but did not enjoy it at all, much more like a scotch to me. Had a few other regulars C. Taylor and new favorite Window Jane.

    #2308 4 years ago
    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Boy oh boy theres lots going on in this drink. Had to think about the first taste but sorted it all out after the 2nd drink. Mellow initial taste then a medium oak taste on back followed up by a nice burn. This is some good shit boys and girls.[quoted image]

thanks always curious in this one, if more oak taste that’s what I like. I felt like the green label Wheller which I tried for the first time this week was light and more scotch like.

    #2319 4 years ago
    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

All of the wellers are wheat bourbons which kind of confuses people a lot of times they don't know that theiy are wheat bourbons and they expect something else. There's not a whole lot of the oakiness in the green label Weller but is much more prevalent in the Weller antique which is the red label.

Thanks for the info, Appreciate it, with that being said on your comment below do you think I would like Stagg Jr more as next on my list of new ones to try.

    #2347 4 years ago
    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Sounds to me that you would prefer a heavier bodied bourbon whether that is Stagg jr or Bookers is up to you. Seems as though a lot of people aren't fans of the Stagg jr but I find it to be very good along with the Bookers as well. You may also like some Old Forester offerings especially the new single barrel they have just recently released. Good Luck!

Yes that’s me. Like the color darker too. Have not tried Stagg Jr but have and Bookers in the past but need to try again. As for Old Forester see one of my post above as did not like the past one we bought.

Well this pains me to admit but @Chisox you were right about the weller 12. Definitely didnt live up to the expectations I had for it thats for sure. I agree and also did not like the green bottle by them at all, too light and maybe bec it’s wheat more based, just not for me at all.

I might have to see if my local Costco has it. I've actually had pretty good luck there finding Old Forester and Buffalo Trace at reasonable prices. I passed on the Kentucky Owl as I just couldn't pull the trigger at $129 for something I wasn't sure I'd like. Not that $109 is all that much better but that seems to be a pretty good price for Kentucky Owl so if I was going to try it I'd want to pay the least amount possible for it

We just got it out here in Arizona and total wine Store price $125 which I bought recently after see others enjoy on here and our Costco at time I went only had the Owl rye 10 yr green label at $180.

    Quoted from DBLM:

So I just got back from a cruise for work (sales kick off) and as part of it they got all of us the unlimited drink pass. As part of this, I sampled everything. A lot. Between the various bars and the duty free I drink a lot of Buffalo Trace, various Wellers, some Blantons amongst things like Makers, Four Roses, Bulleit, etc and I have come to one conclusion: I am not a big fan of the Buffalo Trace distillery.
Buffalo Trace was just ... ok? Not bad, but too light for my palate. Blanton’s was fine when I could find it. I know this is going to be heretical to say it with this crowd but I hated Weller. I tried, black, green, and red and did not like any of them. Outside of Makers (and I prefer the higher octanes of Makers), I like strong, full flavor bourbons. I prefer stronger wheatted bourbons to lighter ones. BT products are hard to find around here so I wanted to give them a good try. I have gone through a bottle of Stag Jr, have had Pappy 23 and 20 (liked 20 better than 23), and combined with all of the drinking I did this week it just makes me realize that their mash bills are not for me.
I know the BT products share mashbills but they are just not my wheelhouse. Has anybody else experienced where they pretty much write off a distillery similar to me?

I have to agree on Weller, as said above not a fan of the green and too light, but probably bec I am not a rye big fan as others have suggested, I do like a lot of Buffalo Trace, try Handcock not too pricey if you find it at 88.9 proof, I have pic above

Is it ok to switch from different brands in one night or do most prefer to stick to just one bottle if having more than one glass? Just curious what you all do and think about it. I have done both at times but think it might be best to stick to one kind but not entirely sure. I feel if I switch I don’t get the true taste of a glass in the bottle.

I’ve had the 10 yr (meh, it’s fine), and the 12 yr Binny’s pick ( )I haven’t tried the regular release 12 yr or the 15 yr (or is it 14 yr) that mixes Dickel in there. I’m ok with a little Dickel being mixed into blends, like most of the Barrel Bourbons from the last couple years. Lots of people don’t like the Dickel profile.
This 12 yr pick is old MGP stock that is just fantastic. It’s only 99 proof, if it was barrel strength it would be legendary.

I liked it since I discovered awhile back, it’s nice and dark for me and more char full taste. It might be a little pricey but it’s a new one I enjoyed.

The gold label I have had since around 2003 or so maybe before 2007 whenever it came out based on my memory. I tried to bye all the gold label Jack bottles when they came out and sat on my shelves for years Then drank them. Had them all but appears only a drop left in the last bottle I have of them gone bad. Oh well. Off to the new maybe next week, enjoy ya all. Just got my sample bottles in from Amazon. Going to try these bad boys as they are a) wider mouth (easier to fill) and b) cheaper because they are plastic. I think I have everybody’s mailing address. I will work on this over the next few days.
If there are others that would like to join the bourbon tasting zoom just let us know. We have been rotating sending out samples to folks and trying them during our zoom. Cool way to try new stuff.

Ok so one of our local grocery stores Frys out here in AZ had a bourbon display special. I learned through my Arizona Bourbon Society thread as did not see any local ads so was a surprise. Some people got lucky last week at their stores and posting pics on Facebook. But today we got lucky, no BLANTONS at our store or two others I tried but I really wanted the Stagg Jr. My girl called me and picked me up two and left the remaining 2 left for others. Cheers.

    Quoted from Kkuoppamaki:

Thanks to Bill I had an opportunity to sample three new to me bourbons tonight; Weller antique, smoke wagon and Stagg jr batch 12. Found the all quite different, smoke wagon perhaps being between the other two. Liked them all, don’t think you can go wrong with any of them, but if I had to based on the tasting tonight I’d put Weller on top of the list. Will have to have another go though to confirm the initial feeling. Love trying new bourbons, thanks pindelapin for making my Friday night!

Curious to know as I am not much of a rye guy or maybe just not found one that grabs me in yet, was Weller much lighter in color and taste then Smoke wagon which I have never tried but have tried Stagg Jr which we be darker in color and heavier taste

    #7903 3 years ago
    Quoted from DBLM:

Big fan of it. Great pour at a great price, plus aged 9 years. If you run across the 12 pick it up as it is tremendous. I have two separate 15 years which are both very oak-y, if that is your thing.

    #7904 3 years ago
    Quoted from DBLM:

Here is my review that I just posted to reddit of my rye tasting. Tremendous time and flavors.
    —Matt
Blind Rye Throwdown: Boss Hog III vs Old Carter 4 vs Peerless
I love all 3 of these ryes and wanted to see how they compare to each other. I am most definitely not a fancy reviewer, don’t buy into pomp and circumstance, and my palate vocabulary is basic. However, I have two reasons that you should read this review: I have good booze and don’t care which one comes out on top. With that out of the way, onto the main event!
    The contenders:
Whistle Pig Boss Hog III: Paid $300
Old Carter Batch 4: Paid $175
    Peerless: Paid $120
Booze Backgrounds: You can look them up.
Pours: 1.5 oz neat, rested about 5 mins
    Glasswear: Plastic Solo cups
Drinking atmosphere: Playing pinball and listening to Manowar
Testing note: For some criteria, I will compare the samples against each other. I created a template so will fill out details as I go.
    Sample A
Color: Darkest of the 3. Looks like Maple syrup
Smell: Deep smell. Small ethanol with mint
Taste: Very thick and smooth. Heavy feeling in a good way. Vanilla and mint on the tip of the tongue. Warm but not hot. Very smooth
Finish: Deep and lasting. It feels like an experience. Smooth, no burn. I don’t want it to end.
    Sample B
Color: 2nd darkest of the 3. Very viscous.
Smell: Sweet maple syrup. Just a hint of ethanol, but not in a bad way.
Taste: Maple syrup and pepper. Hotter on the front of the tongue and back compared to the first. Oilier than the first.
Finish: Long finish. Hotter than the first but not bad at all. Great aftertaste. Dramatic, but in a completely different way than the first. Would be even better in colder weather.
    Sample C
Color: Lightest of the 3. Still dark. Seems a little less viscous than the first two.
Smell: Warm cinnamon. A little lighter aroma compared to the first two. Least amount of ethanol smell.
Taste: Very oily and viscous. Hottest of the three. Reminds me of an atomic fireball with mint. Taste it on the tip and the sides of the tongue. Not quite as smooth as the first two.
Finish: Longest lasting aftertaste of the three, but not quite as pleasant. Still, a fantastic rye.
    Stack Rank:
    Peerless
    Old Carter
    Whistle Pig 3
Notes: I have to admit, I am shocked by the results. I went in thinking that it would that it would be reversed or that Whistle Pig and Old Carter would be 1st. As it happens, I drank them in the order that I ranked them. All of these ryes are beyond fantastic, and truth be told, I prefer all of them to my favorite bourbons. I like fuller flavor bourbons such as Bookers, Knob Creek, ECBP, and Old Forrester 1920. As much as I love those, I would take any of those over my favorite bourbons. I know a lot of folks rave about Pappy, which, I have had all of them, but these 3 ryes blow them out of the water for taste and complexity. In fairness, I have not had GTS or WLW so can or compare them to those, but these rank high in my book.
All in all, tremendous fun. As I finish up my review I feel warm and tingly inside. For those that have not ventured far into ryes, I highly encourage it. They tend to run hotter than bourbons but if you like that type of thing you will be highly rewarded. I look forward to running this back in the colder weather to see if that changes anything. [quoted image]

Nice Matt, so after you ranked, which was the name on each sample to match bottle

    Quoted from DBLM:

Navy’s a fun time. Watching the mids march in, do push ups after scoring, flyovers, etc. More importantly, seeing some of the very best young men and women that our nation has to offer. The tailgating is fairly legit with high ranking military folks (proximity to DC) with hospitality tents thrown by the defense contractors. Lots of booze, lots of crab cakes. We take the boat over and ride the trolly to the stadium.
Now that we are past the construction phase we were going to sponsor a mid (basically, be a support network and a home away from home) but corona. Next year, though. Look forward to doing that.

My Dad graduated from there and watches every game. All Navy games on TV out here. Loved when NAVY beat ND a few years ago. He use to go to every home game when we lived back in Pennsylvania and took me to Army vs Navy game for many years. We still watch every year as well.

The three samples were Whistle Pig Boss Hog 3, Old Carter 4, and Peerless 4 year old.

so the description was A for W Pig, and B for Old Carter, & C for Peerless?

Enough of that maudlin bs. Bookers Shiny Barrel Batch. I know a lot of people really like this batch but I think it is just a tick behind Country Ham. Of course, Country Ham is a fairly legendary Bookers release.

I have not tried the regular but love the store pick and got 2nd bottle. Now a friend at work who is Jim Beam and Knob fan enjoyed the regular Russels Reserve over the store pick.

Guess I need to try the 1920 as only tried The Statesman by Old F and hated it. Just bought the store pick 90 proof by them need to open but having wine now with honey bunny, soon soon it’s only 9ish over here

    #8587 3 years ago

Ok 0 for 2 with Old Foster, this bottle no taste for me and bad after taste, please give me back my $39.99 and tax for this store pick Total Wine. Only other OF bottle I had was the Statesman and hated it as well. Do I even try the 1920 everyone seems to worship or pass. This is below 4 Roses select which I don’t love either and new to me but expected more from the famous OF lineup.

Returned that OF single barrel total wine store pick, first time doing this and figured I would try based on that it was a recommendation and due to how much we spend in the store, it was horrible no flavor and so of course we picked up 3 new ones and spend more than planned as usual, since they got back in stock had To get the Window Jane which I enjoy and others wanted me try since Peerless only 2 bottles left and the other one was recommended to me by them after I sampled a few different Heaven Hill bottles and Garrison Brothers 12yr good but not worth the price. These are last three bottles I buy before go back for secret Santa bottle to buy. Major props to Total Wine no excuses on my return And great service on the opened one glass of the OF returned, great customer service. Off to the pool and maybe cigar and dinner Pork ribs And if your zooming might hope in later.

Also just to be clear nobody on here is going to judge you for whatever your drinking out of. Like I said b4 the metal cups tend to be something I personally shy away from. However if you like it go right ahead and pour em tall and keep on keeping on. Matter of fact if you wanna drink the shit out of your shoe I still wouldn't care. Actually that would be some funny ass shit to see maybe you could pour a shoe drink on a zoom call so we could have a good laugh!

I know that’s why I asked as was curious to know. I love this group of friendly turkeys. I always use to drink in a glass but like the coldness of the yeti, just never thought it would have that much effect on taste and wanted to know what others experienced. Thanks.

    Quoted from Homebru:

I tried this last night and i enjoyed it. Probably not worth the $75 i spent nice, but highly drinkable. Very smooth, but not without character. I liked the finish with a nice dry vanilla...but not too sweet.
