The top one wins, hands down, because it actually works the way needed to make the ice clear. The second maker results in cloudy, caused by the impurities and air bubbles that get pushed to the center of the cube as it freezes. To make clear ice, you need to avoid that. The top one does that by freezing the water from the top, pushing all the air bubbles to the bottom. The trick to clear ice is to take the ice out of the cooler before the cloudy part freezes, or to chip it off afterward. You don't need a fancy mold for that, a Styrofoam cooler box works too and you can make a block of clear ice as long as you don't let it freeze through.
And yes, clear ice makes bourbon taste better so clear ice FTW!
