Deleted. In talking with folks on reddit it looks like the Beam distribution changes might just be located in my county

Had to run down to paducah ky today my wife bought a dog. No way I wasn't going to hit up some shops while I was down there. Grabbed a few bottles to go along with the dog.

Nice I saw 1 bottle of Weller fulll proof today at a shop and they wanted $300 for it.

Big fan of it. Great pour at a great price, plus aged 9 years. If you run across the 12 pick it up as it is tremendous. I have two separate 15 years which are both very oak-y, if that is your thing.

Chilling with my daughter right now but will be doing a blind rye tasting here in about 30 mins. Got my template setup for posting to reddit but for those that know me, you know my review is a little looser and more fun. Be on the lookout here shortly.

Also, if anybody is up for shenanigans I might could be convinced.

Anyone try this Weller Single Barrel yet? The Old Tub was cheap enough to give a shot..

Here is my review that I just posted to reddit of my rye tasting. Tremendous time and flavors.

    —Matt

Blind Rye Throwdown: Boss Hog III vs Old Carter 4 vs Peerless

I love all 3 of these ryes and wanted to see how they compare to each other. I am most definitely not a fancy reviewer, don’t buy into pomp and circumstance, and my palate vocabulary is basic. However, I have two reasons that you should read this review: I have good booze and don’t care which one comes out on top. With that out of the way, onto the main event!

    The contenders:
Whistle Pig Boss Hog III: Paid $300
Old Carter Batch 4: Paid $175
    Peerless: Paid $120

Booze Backgrounds: You can look them up.

Pours: 1.5 oz neat, rested about 5 mins

    Glasswear: Plastic Solo cups

Drinking atmosphere: Playing pinball and listening to Manowar

Testing note: For some criteria, I will compare the samples against each other. I created a template so will fill out details as I go.

    Sample A
Color: Darkest of the 3. Looks like Maple syrup
Smell: Deep smell. Small ethanol with mint
Taste: Very thick and smooth. Heavy feeling in a good way. Vanilla and mint on the tip of the tongue. Warm but not hot. Very smooth
Finish: Deep and lasting. It feels like an experience. Smooth, no burn. I don’t want it to end.

    Sample B
Color: 2nd darkest of the 3. Very viscous.
Smell: Sweet maple syrup. Just a hint of ethanol, but not in a bad way.
Taste: Maple syrup and pepper. Hotter on the front of the tongue and back compared to the first. Oilier than the first.
Finish: Long finish. Hotter than the first but not bad at all. Great aftertaste. Dramatic, but in a completely different way than the first. Would be even better in colder weather.

    Sample C
Color: Lightest of the 3. Still dark. Seems a little less viscous than the first two.
Smell: Warm cinnamon. A little lighter aroma compared to the first two. Least amount of ethanol smell.
Taste: Very oily and viscous. Hottest of the three. Reminds me of an atomic fireball with mint. Taste it on the tip and the sides of the tongue. Not quite as smooth as the first two.
Finish: Longest lasting aftertaste of the three, but not quite as pleasant. Still, a fantastic rye.

    Stack Rank:
    Peerless
    Old Carter
    Whistle Pig 3

Notes: I have to admit, I am shocked by the results. I went in thinking that it would that it would be reversed or that Whistle Pig and Old Carter would be 1st. As it happens, I drank them in the order that I ranked them. All of these ryes are beyond fantastic, and truth be told, I prefer all of them to my favorite bourbons. I like fuller flavor bourbons such as Bookers, Knob Creek, ECBP, and Old Forrester 1920. As much as I love those, I would take any of those over my favorite bourbons. I know a lot of folks rave about Pappy, which, I have had all of them, but these 3 ryes blow them out of the water for taste and complexity. In fairness, I have not had GTS or WLW so can or compare them to those, but these rank high in my book.

All in all, tremendous fun. As I finish up my review I feel warm and tingly inside. For those that have not ventured far into ryes, I highly encourage it. They tend to run hotter than bourbons but if you like that type of thing you will be highly rewarded. I look forward to running this back in the colder weather to see if that changes anything.

Hey @bowz, do you pull for any college teams? Are they playing next week? Seems like different conferences are playing or not. I pull for Navy because of proximity and my college did not have a team.

Curious to see how long the NFL season lasts this year.

Well, I went to illinois, so I root for them even though they’re been awful lately.
In general, I just like watching any game. Love watching Navy and the double wing on offense-first offense I coaches in HS.
The NFL will last the whole season-guaranteed.

Navy’s a fun time. Watching the mids march in, do push ups after scoring, flyovers, etc. More importantly, seeing some of the very best young men and women that our nation has to offer. The tailgating is fairly legit with high ranking military folks (proximity to DC) with hospitality tents thrown by the defense contractors. Lots of booze, lots of crab cakes. We take the boat over and ride the trolly to the stadium.

Now that we are past the construction phase we were going to sponsor a mid (basically, be a support network and a home away from home) but corona. Next year, though. Look forward to doing that.

You can buy Peerless Rye by the case here, it's on the shelf at almost every store I'm in. Total Wine here even has a barrel pick ($120!). I've yet to pull the trigger. There are so many good choices for rye in the $40-$50 range that I can't imagine this being much better for almost double the price.

Lol at the reddit bourbon guy. That sub is pretty nuts, a lot of flexing and bottle porn, but the mods seem like pretty decent people. I watched them live stream their tasting of samples for their Russell's barrel pick.

As a fellow rye fan I can tell you Peerless is top shelf. I’m not surprised by Matt’s blind, it’s that good. My bourbon club picked two barrels from them that were stupid good.

Since we are now locked at 20, feel free to PM me with:
    1. Full name
    2. Mailing address
    3. Bourbon you tend to like/ dislike

    For 3, something like
“I tend to like 9-15year wheaters. I don’t like stuff that is finished in sherry, rum, etc...”.
    Or
“I like to try new, so your local distiller is good”
    Or
“I like buffalo trace, four roses, and EC, would love a local store pick of any”
    Or
“Rye sucks, Matt is more concerned with that inflatable swan rather than knowing what good liquor is”.

You get the idea. Something simple to provide general guidance to your gift buyer.

Remember, be happy and gracious no matter what and assume your person put some genuine effort in to it as we are a small niche inside a smaller niche.

I have offended the reddit bourbon gods by drinking out of Solo cups! What a bunch of tool bags! One guy said that by changing the glassware I could experience them at a higher level! If only I could smell worth a damn then maybe a glass would make a difference. What next, my choice of music would impact thing? Okay, they might have a point there. Manowar is not for everybody.

I wonder what would happen if I did a tasting sitting on my pelican. They really would explode.

Mine is actually a store pick from one of the places I go to. This guy has an amazing pallet and every barrel pick he has made has been killer. With that said I really love this one but his bottles aren't cheap either. I'm not a rye fan at all but he bought a barrel of rossville union and gave me a sample and it knocked my socks off. It will be delivered here in a few weeks and I will be grabbing a few bottles.

So I basically turned some of my bourbon collection into a pinball collection. One passion funded another. I beg and plead with the store owners I deal with and up to this point it hasn't paid off. Oh well no sob story shit here i'll keep hunting for it, eventually I will come across at least 1 bottle somewhere.

Early November is the typical release for the BT stuff. Start shmoozing now. I tend to frequent a few stores that I know will have the bottles I want to establish a rapport with the manager/owner. If they see your spending money in there store you’ll have a better shot of scoring atleast a Van Winkle 10,12 or a GTS. Those get released in larger numbers. I’ve waited in line at 4:00am to get a Pappy 15 for $250 when the store opened at 9:00. Lol!! Froze my ass off but worth it.

Around here many places save up allocated bottles for Black Friday, and people start lining up (or paying other people to stand in for them) more than 24 hours in advance. In November, in Wisconsin. And then they flip the bottle immediately online before they leave the parking lot.

I’m on the hunt for a GB Premium/LE or Funhouse if any of you bourbon collectors are up for a bourbon/cash trade.

Just wow. That’s the most impressive stash of high end hard to find bourbon I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, in a lot of places it doesn’t work like that. I have a place that hooks me up with somewhat rare finds(Stagg Jr, Weller 107, Rock Hill, ETL), but not the crazy good stuff you have. That seems to be saved for mythical people apparently...

As many of you know, Matt was reported as missing several days ago. I have been in contact with his family, and am happy to report that he has been found. He is tired, but otherwise is in good health. When rescued, he was heard muttering something about a Zoom meeting gone wrong.

WooHoo looks like now I got a new bottle to crack open while i'm running my smoker. Big thanks to DBLM for picking up this store pick for me. I'm always looking to try local guys store picks to compare to my local picks. Thanks Matt!
