When is the next zoom call? Can't wait to drink way too much and be useless the next day.

I mean, we could hop on now if you want. Some people were saying Saturday night. Any thoughts?

    Quoted from Chisox:

I’ve had the 10 yr (meh, it’s fine), and the 12 yr Binny’s pick ( )I haven’t tried the regular release 12 yr or the 15 yr (or is it 14 yr) that mixes Dickel in there. I’m ok with a little Dickel being mixed into blends, like most of the Barrel Bourbons from the last couple years. Lots of people don’t like the Dickel profile.
This 12 yr pick is old MGP stock that is just fantastic. It’s only 99 proof, if it was barrel strength it would be legendary.

I liked it since I discovered awhile back, it’s nice and dark for me and more char full taste. It might be a little pricey but it’s a new one I enjoyed.

    Longtime lurker, first time poster.

Making the switch from scotch to bourbon to broaden my palate. My scotch of choice is Balvenie, and I just picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace.

Any other intro level bourbons? I prefer to drink neat in a glencairn.

Welcome to the limelight no more hiding in the shadows I would try regular Elijah Craig its a nice everyday sipper.

    #5010 3 months ago

any 4roses product is a win in my book for first intro to daily sippers.

    #5011 3 months ago

Concur with Whysnow on the 4 Roses. Regular Maker's Mark is fairly safe as well, and then you can spiral out from there. Similar to Scotch, there are different flavor profiles for bourbon. Do you like strong drinks or mild? Do you like a sweeter flavor? Is the nose important to you? Share some of the things that you like and I am sure that folks can give you some great recommendations.

    #5012 3 months ago

    ^^
Thanks for the suggestions. I prefer a milder sipper with a sweet, oaky nose. Not a fan of peat. I go back and forth with casks (sherry casks with Macallan, rum casks with Balvenie Caribbean).

I typically keep higher quality sippers and 'decent' $30 bottles for cocktails (Makers). I bought the Buffalo Trace as a mixer but read good reviews about the spice, nose, etc.

I think you'll really enjoy four Rose's as a mixer. It is so underpriced for its flavor and smoothness. Remember how cheap Weller12 was back when? I dont think 4 roses will get that crazy but I have a case of small batch in attic anyway.

I personally hate peat or smoky anything so remember that when considering my thoughts. I bounce between single malts and bourbon often. If you have not had the chance to try I would recommend Eagle Rare, Wellers, Elijah. Pretty much every bottle mentioned in this thread comes as a good recommendation.

If you want to get into some single malts I recommend sippers like the spot brand. Green, yellow and red spot are all good. I had a green spot finished in some sort of fancy wine cask other day and it was great.

If you ever see a bottle of Pendyern Madeira finish I recommend scooping it up although it is rare to find. - Took me 3 years of asking our local large distributor to get distribution setup.

Love bourbon like these folks but I still dream about Macallan 21 and 24 once a month as well.

    #5014 3 months ago

For your milder bourbons, you might look at Wild Turkey, Weller, Jefferson's Ocean, High West, and Blanton's, amongst others. Sounds like you could be a fan of the wheat mash bill, which tend to be milder and sweeter than some of the other types.

    #5015 3 months ago

Best thing is to just start buying bottles. We all may like certain bottles that are the same but we all also don't like the same bottles. Best way to find out what profile you like is to start with a $30-$40 price pount and buy a couple bottles by different makers. You will find what you like by doing this.

Don’t worry I missed the zoom but stayed up until 2am with a few. Also, not sure about the crab talk I missed but we have been using this place for years and enjoy the hard shell crabs cooked with seasoning. We order 3 or 4 lbs Of male colossal heavy seasoned once a year and fed ex to AZ. My favorite meal of the year. https://www.crabplace.com/

Thanks for the tip! I ordered the smaller "select" size, but they're looking good.

And in the spirit of opening more bottles, this single-barrel 9-year old gets the nod today.

Ok, I’m sounding the drinking alarm. Bourbon zoom Saturday night 9 EDT. I will post the link about an hour before the event. I will defer to the more refined of the group as to if we have a tasting theme for tomorrow night or if we are just going to thunder dome it. Look forward to seeing everybody from the last call and meeting new folks.

    Yup, good shit Bill!

I prefer the nose and front end of the EC18 but the back end and hug on the barrel!

Damn good stuff and the higher proof is still very mellow!

    #5033 3 months ago

    Is EC18 worth the coin?

Well, it used to be $55. But it also used to be nasty/mediocre until the last 5 batches that have been from really good to “holy shit!”. It seems to be priced $65-$80 retail now but I’ve paid up to $100 for batch 12 and it’s worth every penny and then some. The current batch (13) is really good and is worth buying $90 or lower IMO.
