Hi,

I´m proud to present The Simpsons Pinball Party PIN2DMD colorization project which I started 2 months ago for my own pinball machine.
I never did anything like this before and I had to learn a lot how to get it done in the quality i wanted to have. One of the biggest
parts was to make all the recordings, using the pin2dmd tool, containing all the scenes of a gameplay. After all the time I have spent on this, I must admit that I would rather have paid somebody else 15-20$ to get a ready to use colorization, instead of doing it by myself.
That is why I ask you to support my job and if you want to have a copy of my work please make a donation by using this link

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=JLRAHFTD23UKU

I will send you 2 files you simply need to copy on the SD card and put it into your pin2dmd. I will also send you updates automatically
if available. Out of respect for my work and as a motivation for future projects, I kindly ask you not to forward these files to other users.
Please also report me if you get my work offered from other sources. Thank you !!

PIN2DMD firmware version 2.38 or later and Display ROM v5.0 in english is recommended, since all my work is based on this version
If you find any uncolorized scenes, or bugs, let me know, how you got it, or send me recordings / videos.

If someone wants to donate me the parts or contribute to my PIN2DMD fund, then I would be happy to invest the time required to colorize for Getaway HS2 and openly share with the community.

It would be great if someone was giving it a shot. It's something i want to have a go at but with work and study it'll be months before i can even start thinking about it. JD would be good too.

Don´t think it will take to long, but you have to wait for the author to announce it.

Best place to look and ask for pin2dmd colorizations, support, installation help etc is vpuniverse.com

It has gotten pretty quiet since the group sale. I was curious how everyone else was doing with colorizing their machines. Gottlieb's in partictular. I have been able to make many different dumps and bring them into the editor. I not making much progress with colorizing my Gottlieb Tee'd Off. I have been able to create a project with about 15 different dumps that I have bookmarked, but the process of colorizing is not going very well. Is there any way some small specific tutorials could be made to show how different things are created. The 3 youtube tutorials are very broad in the use of the editor and I was wondering if something that dealt with some specific concepts might help.

Thanks again for making a fun addition that does greatly increase the value of my pinball machine. I look forward to all that is to come.

I'm about halfway through with Mario Bros. (bomb mode, all the ? block sequences, and castle sequences to go). It's taken a lot of time to understand the editor. It's very systematic. LOTS and LOTS of trial and error to see what works best. For the main part I've just been searching vpuniverse and reading the pin2dmd.com/editor page.

It took me a while to figure out how to get a single frame color mask to save. Ended up having to click copytonext/prev which causes a java error and then it saves or is retained. Then for whatever reason out of the blue my color palette indexes would be off by one but only when exporting to realpin. Everything in the XML everything was pointed to the correct color palette and in the editor when you look at it. Come to find out there was a duplicate color palette index and no clue how that happened. This is my experience thus far. It is a lot of fun, just takes a bit of time

#15 6 years ago

Making some progress with colorizing. But I still don't really understand the editor very well, so I am doing some basic color replacements. It gets tedious with some animations having around 70 frames. This was a fairly easy one. Took about 20 minutes.

I'm almost done coloring my 5th game. Baywatch is done other than some issues being sorted by lucky1

Hi guys, real great product and respect to all your creativity!!!
Just wow!

Hoping that someone makes a coloration for cftbl, if someone does please let me know
i would like to color mine, but to me its like somekind of magic stuff you are doing
i cant even get a rom in my pc
im willing to donate for it

#18 6 years ago

i got the editor, and the exe
So i now can start the exe when connected the dmd in my pinball to computer and then change color and brightness.

when i use the dump button i get a save on my pc, but on my desk. anyone know how can i make the rom apear in the editor so i can colorize and save it? and put it in the dmd?

#19 6 years ago

you "dump" the DMD screens not the rom. you load the recordings into the editor and color it there.

#20 6 years ago

thanks Malenko
On the dmd is already an i believe 3 color version of cftbl in red white and blue, is it possible to get this file in the editor and add more colors to it?
i can see the folder on my sd card.

#21 6 years ago

That sounds like the default VGA palette. You should be able to just pick colors with the pin2dmd.exe

What's the progress on Mustang? I see it listed on the main post.

I believe everything in the main post has been completed. SF2 wasnt added until I was done with it, and Godzilla is about 95% done and not up there

Cool. Has the person who colored Mustang shown it off?

played on vpin but result is the same

Here is how the colorizing of Tee'd Off is going. I still really don't know how masks work, so the screens where the score is included will have to wait. There are animations where the color shows different in the editor (which are correct) than they do on the DMD. Also, most of the colors look about right excpet for the Browns which show up much lighter than they do in the editor.

#28 6 years ago

i now have it in white purple and brightgreen mutch better,

I do hope someone makes a full color version for cftbl, would be sick
i saw a collored dmd once realy awesome!

You can make a dump and upload to vpuniverse as a start. Just connect the display to pin2dmd.exe via usb. Check the dump checkbox (turns red) and roll the ball though all modes with the glass off.

Since making masks and keyframes is still something I don't understand, I thought I would try my hand at making a custom animation for the Hole in One and Missed Hole in One animations which were very basic. I think they came out pretty well in comparison. Now to figure out how to get them to work in the game.
On a side note, I am not sure why the color pallete isn't saving. In the previous version of the editor there was an Apply button that applied a pallete to the scene. That has been removed in the latest version of the editor, is there an updated help file to understand the changes to the new editor.

Thanks for your help.

#43 6 years ago

yeah I struggled for a bit learning the new version of the editor myself. The apply palette button was moved to here (pic below). I love the additional keyframe masks, but having a hard time understanding the color masks now for scenes, as you can't copy and paste like you used to be able to. An there seems to be a new color mask mode which wasn't there before. Would be nice to have some info on each new editor when it comes out. there are occasional references to changes listed in this thread however http://vpuniverse.com/forums/topic/2268-pin2dmd-editor/

BTW I'm nearly complete (working on the last scene now)..woohoo

Not fully implemented yet. Docs on pin2dmd.com will be updated when it is working.

Just got one of these and still on the learning curve. Has anyone done anything for XMen?

#46 6 years ago

XMen is Stern SAM based. In case you haven´t found out already you have to use pinball browser to colorize.

Here is a good starting point

Keep me updated about your progress

#47 6 years ago

hmm..looks like switching editors mid project might not be a good idea, as most of the stuff I did prior to the editor switch is not working. Looks like I may need to redo key frames prior to the new editor(or something else). I haven't validated this yet however. Still running FW 2.41 would that have anything to do with it?

UPDATE: Yep looks like deleting and re-adding the key frames works to restore. Nothing is working with the keyframe masks above 9 though..assuming this may be due to firmware, but will wait for confirmation.

Thanks for the pointer. From what I can tell, trying to colorize XMLE is probably not going to work. This is due to the CPU board only have 64MB of ROM and only a couple of STERN SAM games have 128MB. With only 64MB, I will likely run out of storage space if I try to colorize all of XM. Is that correct?

You always start with loading the comm patch into the ROM. In the SmartDMD tab use side channel (serial) to store colors. Then load patch in the SAM tab and choose comm120.hex. Use your machines 6digit serial number. Then execute extend memory. That gives you 625318 bytes of free memory in the xmen LE ROM.. Then load a basic smartdmd.txt like this https://www.dropbox.com/s/0zkmahr9qqikrb9/SmartDmd.txt?dl=0

625318 is plenty if you follow some basic rules.
If you only assign a palette without modifying the picture data it does not use any additional space. So best practice is to find a suitable palette for most pictures and only change the picture with the tools if really necessary.

If you still run out of memory I suggested a method to oga83 which should improve memory usage in the pinball browser projects significantly. He wants to add it in one of the next releases.

#50 6 years ago

Thanks Lucky1 -- that helps immensely. Is there a tutorial on how to do a colorization? From my bit of playing around, I can see that I'm missing some obvious things. Given that SmartDmd.txt file, I get a set of palettes that I can use. Is there an easy way to assign the same palette to a whole series of images (e.g., a video sequence)? Right now, I open the image editor, select a palette, save and go to the next image. Then I select a palette, save and go to the next image. After doing this three times, I gave up. Must be a better way . . .
