I was thinking it would be cool if I could receive some sort of notification for any updates to locations near me.

The user chooses a distance, say 25 miles, and if anything changes in that 25 mile radius I would get a message.

A bowling alley just recently opened up near me and they gloriously have 4 pins. As sad as it is, a 4 pin increase in the Philadelphia area basically doubles the amount of pins here. I didn't know it was a place until I saw an article in the local paper, but then I went to the Pin Map and it was already listed.

Said place is the South Bowl. It is listed twice, can a mod kindly remove one of them.

The first listing has more info, so I would recommend removing the 2nd.

Lists 8 locations and 11 machines to play in Philly. Hopefully that helps you find some more places to play.

It seems most of the tweets are updates to locations, which was basically what I was asking for, just not quite as focused as I was hoping for.

Thanks for the suggestion! Notification are high up on my wish list of things to do. Not just for locations but also (wishlist) market ads, your (quoted) forum posts or new posts in your topics, or stuf happening to your friends/followers (related to the new social stuff that I've made a start with). I hope to be able to get some off this done before the end of this year.

I wonder if location updates can be enhanced by integrating them into the forum the way marketplace ads have been.

Right now if I modify a location (new location, update machines at existing one, update description or add review) it gets kicked to the top of the "recently changed" list on the Pinmap home, but things fall off quickly and you have to go in and out of each item to see what changed. It can be hard to tell what has changed specifically. I realize changed locations are announced on Twitter but those also have no details other than # of games and it's hard to keep up/not miss things.

Adding changes as a forum category would be great because:
1) This would greatly increase visibility of locations new and old and promote new machines on location
2) This would greatly increase visibility of reviews of locations and consolidate comments into a single thread (many of which already exist for locations)
3) Users could RSS that category to have a scannable, reliable ticker of changes; users uninterested could hide category

Challenges: code to represent and surface specific updates other than reviews (machine removed or added, comment on machine) as threaded text

I just think surfacing this information in a more "newsy" accessible way would really help encourage discussion and increase location traffic...

Bumping this after three years...

Any possibility at minimum of highlighting what has been updated in a newly updated location, and showing history sort of like collection history? It's sometimes difficult to tell what has been updated, especially for larger locations.
