While playing Evel Knievel this evening, one of the pop bumpers started firing without the ball hitting it. Next thing I know, smoke is rolling. Lifted the playfield and the coil was extremely hot. I started searching for rebuild kits, but I don't know how to tell which coils I need.

Also, any ideas where I should start looking for the cause?

Hello. Manual should tell you what coil is used if you cannot read the numbers on the wrapper. Manual should also have a section explaining what to check if a solenoid is always energized. Did you lift the playfield and make sure the coils wires are connected to both lugs? How about checking switch to make sure it is not always activated? Vid has a great thread that covers pop bumpers. I'd also review that.

Just look at one of the other pop bumpers for the coil number. Almost for sure it's a 26-1200 coil (11 ohms). Also check the pop bumper switch cap. If this shorts (common on this system), you can get errant coil firing. But most likely the driver board TIP transistor decided it was time to die, and created a direct short, locking on the pop bumper coil.

If the bumper was popping it's probably a cap or switch issue, if the coil is stuck energized the transistor is most likely the culprit.

It started randomly popping. Did that for about 2 minutes and then the smoke started to roll. I just turned it off and unplugged it,
