We just brought home our first pin and are excited to play, but unfortunately it has some issues that developed between the time I left my house to pick it up and when I got to the seller’s house...

Issue #1- it tends to reset if you hit both flippers at once

Issues #2-6? check out some of the interesting wiring in the pictures below

Issue# 7- the rubbers are all cracked and dry rotted

I’ll get some better pictures tomorrow and include a couple from inside the back box once I figure out how to open it.

#1 is the williams reset issue. The capacitors and/or bridge rectifiers on the power driver board are aging and not providing clean power. This may be resolved by getting a daughterboard (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/announcing-new-product-to-help-resolve-resets-in-wpc-era-games). And/or if you are confident in your desoldering / soldering skills, you can replace the 5 axial caps and 4 bridge rectifiers on the power board.

#2-#6 - If it was working, don't worry about redoing wiring for now. It's not causing you any issues. If/when those coils break down, you can deal with it when you replace them.

#7 - you can find rubber replacement kits on ebay.

Before you try #1, pull off the short ribbon connector between the CPU board (left board) and the big Power Driver Board (large righthand side board), then immediately reinstall it. Pull it off again gently, then reinstall it. A lot of times the reset issue is caused by corroded connectors, and you don't have to mess with the board. DO NOT remove the bridge rectifiers or caps until you diagnose which one(s) are bad, because it is almost definitely not all of them.

#2-7 Yes agree with above

for rubber replacements, go to Pinballlife.com, way cheaper than Ebay

Thanks for the tips^. I’ll give them a shot.

I just found the pinwiki page on WPC resets, and I’m going to check the thermistor tomorrow too. It seemed like the resetting was worse when the game was cold and fired up for the first time.

Once it was outside for a bit we played for almost 5 minutes before it reset.

I recently went through this, you could check tips on that thread:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/wpc-reset-advice

Doesn't hurt to check the thermistor, but more likely J101 I imagine.

If it were me, I'd fix up those wiring connections first, and also check for broken/missing diodes. In researching my problem, I read accounts of things like that causing power strain / drain that can cause resets.

I’ll be sure to put J101 on my list too, thanks. I just read that the coils should all have diodes on this pin, so I’ll look around to see if any are missing.

I won’t be able to sleep well knowing there are rigged up coils and broken stuff inside. I’ll probably be ordering my first round of parts tomorrow.

Kahr board ordered !

What color rubbers should I install? I’ve read that certain colors are softer than others with black being the hardest.

How should I clean the pf? I read Vid’s guide, but still not 100% certain what to use.

Is simple green safe for the diamond coat pf’s or should I stick with naphtha? Any certain wax I should use?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and listening to my newbie questions that have probably been asked many times before.

Naphtha. You need to get rid of anything and everything that’s on that playfield, and Naptha cuts grease, wax, dirt... open a window if you are concerned with the smell. naptha evaporates super quickly so even if you are thorough it won’t take long. (Keep the cap on the tin!)

You’ll get a million responses about wax. “Pure” carnuba (no wax is actually 100% carnuba) is best. Don’t use anything with silicon in it at all. Nothing fancy for a car like Meguiar’s or Turtle Wax, I’d order blitz wax or something similar.

Did I just fix it? Wow, I’m never this lucky. The power driver board mounting screw was loose, so I tightened it up. Also reseated J101.

I’ve played a few games, making sure to double flipper and try to make it reset and it’s working fine.

Awesome and welcome to pinhead status!!!

How do the boards look? Does anyone see anything that should be addressed?

Make sure to replace those AA batteries asap. Ultimately you'll want to relocate the battery pack somewhere off the board, or install an NVRAM chip (which would allow you to eliminate the batteries entirely)... Good luck with your game!

I would suggest nvram no batteries no worries!!! Maybe get some coils ordered and sleeves. You will be looking at rebuilding some flippers soon and fixing that coil that is blown out and has the fancy soldering job on it lol. Pic with the busted part looks like a broken coil stop. Can you take a couple pics of the other side of that coil that has a busted wire. Looks like it is rigged up with a piece of wood.

Here are a few more pictures. I don’t see anything rigged up with wood, but that doesn’t mean anything.

This could be like one of those “What’s wrong with this picture?” games. Let me know all of the issues you see! I’m anxious to get it fixed properly.

It does have the upgraded flipper kit on it. But it looks like they used the original coils back on it.
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/vids-guides-collected
Here is vids guides which I follow 90% of the time! The spring on the flipper coil with no wrapping looks funky but will prob work for a time, but it is going to break sooner or later.
