wait, did you just basically blame Expo for the rain on Wednesday?

Yes. It doesn't rain at MGC.

I also wish Treasure Cove was there, demonstrating their playfield polish!

Email Alan and suggest it. Maybe Treasure Cove never thought of it ?

Yeah, I was not blaming Expo for rain. It actually did rain at MGC this year on friday when I was unloading. But they had a canopy they let us unload under. Never got wet unloading things at MGC.

I've been to about 20 Expos since '89, brought games 3 times, always had a blast, and this year was no exception. Thanks to Rob, Mike, and all the people who bring games for all their hard work.
Expo has come a long way, and I hope it continues for years to come. If nothing changed, I'll still be there. It's Rob & Mikes show, and considering how much is involved in running a huge event like Expo, they do a pretty good job at it.

I also would like to see the free play area open during the Banquet. However, my understanding is that Mike runs the vendor/free play halls, and Rob organizes the seminars and Banquet. So I think Rob is the one who will have to be talked into doing this. If he feels that banquet attendance will suffer, that's the way it goes. I know I've always found an adventure to go on during Banquet time (The Double Door, Empty Bottle, Fitzgerald's, etc.)

Also, here's to Steve Kordek, Russ Jensen, Hal O'rourke, and others who are no longer with us, and made Expo extra special!!

I think he is trying to say that where we had to bring games in this year was less than ideal...especially that it was raining. That NE dock location was a PITA to maneuver and get games into the building.
The first year was easy. Through the south double doors, 60' to the free play area. Last year was the east dock door, then 60' to the free play area. This year the NE dock area, up the zig zag ramp, go inside while your game sits outside (while it's raining out) to the dock door to wait for it to open, bring it in, close the door and then proceed through 10 doors and 1,500' of back service corridors to the free play area. Great if you brought 1 game that weighed 100#, but what a PITA.
I know that's not Mike's fault, the hotel workers were the ones telling us where to unload.
Luckily when I loaded my games up to take them home, we went out the south double doors. Easy Peesy.

I had to drag games in from the NE dock this year and last, it is a PITA, but thats not Expo's call, thats the hotel (and stupid)

No rain. Just freaking snow. Sometimes.

Why don't they allow this anymore? Seems way more convenient. Nice big double doors right off the main parking lot.

sounds to me like all issues could be solved by using a new hotel/conf space...

Plenty of options in chicagoland area and probably quite a few that would be happy to take the $ and provide better service, with no banquet requirement, better entrance and exit for game loading, and no bogus fines for a few stinking tack holes in a wall!!!

There's a loading dock on the east side too with a retractable door that you can drive right up to. the bad thing is that it's just one lane, but this has to be easier than dragging everything through the hotel. We used this 2 maybe 3? years ago and it worked out really well....until they yelled at us and made us have to drag gear through the catacombs of dishes and saucers.

I looked at the Expo schedule months ago and said to myself that the Expo pretty much ends at 5pm with the Banquet start and decided not to stay another night.

Maybe it would be a good idea to move the banquet to Sunday. That would make that day more interesting and even allow more seminars on saturday. Vendors can still attend if the want to as they probably have taken down their booths by then.

Anyone bringing games should not have to run this "gauntlet" when moving games in and out of the hotel. It is hard enough hauling a game without dealing with hotel loadin/loadout issues. Mike, you can do something about this--don't let the hotel walk over the people that are bringing games.

The free play area was a disappointment compared to past Expos. There is no doubt that The CPM & Phoebe carried the free play area. Hats off to them for bringing solid machines that could make it thru the entire show.

    Cross-posted from RGP:

Without naming names, I would like to call out the local league & tourney players who I know have collections, yet don't bring even one pin. If I may brag, I feel like the Chicago Pinball Mafia does a pretty good job of bringing games each year. I'd say we average nearly one pin for each game-owning member.

There's another league in town which I feel is sadly underrepresented in the free play room each year. And there's a group of local tourney specialists who you'll see in the tournament hallway all weekend, and who are glad to play other people's games in ExpoBrawl, yet can't be bothered to bring their own.

    Step it up, guys.

For what it's worth, I feel very lucky to have two quality pinball shows near me, Expo and the MGC. There can always be improvements in any process, however both shows are great opportunities.

In regards to locations, I hope Expo stays out of Chicago itself - that would be a nightmare for many of us.

    Quoted from Dayhuff:

Thats gotta be the dumbest statement I've read so far. I brought two vans full of parts to sell in the vendor area. You think thats cheap to do ? Expo cost me more then ever this year and I sold the least amount then ever with a huge booth. Do you actually think I'm gonna come back if I HAVE to bring games for free play to be a vendor ?? I think being a vendor is great but its alot of work and expense, the last thing I need is to be told that I have to bring games to be a vendor. I think vendors are doing there part already by bringing all there stuff to sell. If every person that showed brought a game that didn't, it would probably triple the number of games there. I think others need to step up and do there part to make the show better, but dont put that much more burdon on the vendors.

Boo hoo hoo if one of my ideas on how to make expo better required you to do something you don't want to. You were already bringing 2 vans, so it doesn't seem hard to add a machine to your cargo.

I'm sorry that you didn't sell as much as you'd like to and that you had a lot to haul in, but maybe if you had a free play machine next to your booth, more people would have looked more closely at what you were selling and would have bought more. I spent a few hundred bucks at various booths and would have spent more if there were more things that I wanted (like a TOM trunk).

The purpose of the thread is to try to help Mike tweak a very good thing. If this suggestion would de-motivate you to be a vendor, you NEED to point that out to us. However, you don't need to have a melt down about it. It was just an idea for discussion.

    Thanks!

Why Stern didn't also have AC/DC for play is beyond me. Seems like the perfect place to allow people to play the game you have so much invested in.

    +100

You would think Stern would go all out and have several of every game thats still offered for sale on display to play. To me , its a no brainer and its even in Sterns home town. Not like theres alot of traveling expenses to set the thing up.

Amen. At least have the staff clear the back aisle of all the chairs & glasses. Also, ask them to have someone ( anyone ) at the dock to operate the doors. The only staff member I saw during the show was the guy on the far end telling us we couldn't load in there.

In the past, the free play area was closed while seminars were open on Friday, regardless of whether or not Expo Brawl was running. This is an Expo policy that has been in effect ever since I've been going, so I'd be surprised if they were to change it now.

    #122 7 years ago

Did not see any great deals. But if the vendors did well more power to them. With the age of the internet it is easy to check prices fast and find better deals .

in another post Mike just said the hall will be open during the banquet next year.

I've recommended this to Pacak several times but here is what I would:

    - Start by getting the rights to use the other banquet hall, the one at the far end of the building. Move the free play hall over there. This will give more room to the free play hall (which has always been a probem) and allow games to be spaced out. This will also allow expo to provide better security as the vendor hall.

    - Work out a deal with the hotel to allow unload/loading at the far end of the hotel, like we use of years pass. This keeps the moving of games away from the general public, the hotel can put something down to protect their carpet and nobody will be taking games in the main hallway now.

    - Convert the current free play area into an extended vendor hall or use it for seminars, etc. Rearrange the layout so everything "expo" is down that main hall and not buried off the side hall in the back.

    - Move the front desk down to the hallway where the current free play area is and make that the entrance to the vendor area, with the entrance near by for free play. It's makes logistical sense if you ask me.

    - Hire some real security. Compared to nearly every other show, it's laughable what Expo passes off as security.

    - Step up and offer a trucking service for those that want to bring games, but might not have the means or time. Several other shows are doing this now and it's why their game turnout blows expo away. Offer other incentives for people to bring games.
