As the Captain said, I do full scans of the entire machine before I ever start the restore. One of those scanners is a must. Depending on the level of restoration you want to do, it will be a lot of work but it can be done. Take a look at my Fire restoration thread and you can see all the work that went into the restoration. It's not perfect but I am really happy with the results.

I never had an issue with Mylar until Fire. Seemed like a different kind of Mylar. It felt different than any others I removed. It didn't matter how much freeze spray I used, that stuff was gonna pull off the art.

I would have at least used a blue lint free towel. Guy must have been cheap. Lol

You did a great job with your fire restore Lonzo. I've done a few coin-op vendor restorations, but this is a whole bother animal.

Thanks. I look forward to seeing what you do with this game. It's always one I keep my eye out for.

I sure wish I had a rotisserie

I built one and its one of the best things I did.

Awesome GI solder. Should I fix this? Worried about it getting some heat and burning up. It may be good though.

I guess my question would be is what was the original wiring? Was that braid added? Where did those cut wires go? In my corvette, they must have had a problem with one side and took the fuse out. Of course I didn't know this when I fixed the driver board. So when I replaced the fuses, one kept blowing. I started testing each GI line individually and two different lines lit up both GI strings. I finally started looking at the wiring under the playfield and I noticed that they added wiring to hook the two strings together. Once I removed that wiring, I was able to hook everything up like it should be.

If they hooked more lights up to one line then you might be overloading that string

Wow. I hate to see that. I did a BTTF and only had one insert lift.

My JP is that way with the planking all over. I am just gonna redo the whole thing. Sand it down and repaint. Then I will make vinyl to put on it.

Just curious. Why are you clearing over a ramp? I have never done that but I have put leftover clear in a Gatorade bottle with no problem. But I did have it eat through a thin plastic cup before. The top of my trash bin still has a nice layer of clear on it. Lol

I never put tape on a playfield that has not been cleared. I used a low tack tape once and it still pulled chips of paint off. Too much risk for me.
I used a flat blade X-acto and the insert art comes off pretty easily.

Frisket is so thin that I would think it would be difficult but I have never used one. I have a regular vinyl cutter but have never tried it. You would still have to solve how you would place it on the playfield. I have never used transfer tape with frisket.

Just curious, why are you not upgrading the connectors?

#768 6 years ago
Quoted from jboner1058:

Changing them from IDC to molex? I figured with Home use and changing over to lower voltage LEDs and an led low voltage display they should be fine. If they flake out on me or get crispy again I’ll change with molex, but I had a metric ton of idc connectors

Makes sense. I guess I just always changed them out and kept doing it after LEDs.

I don't go through changing all the connectors. I usually change the GI connectors and then if I have a problem with a connector, I will just change it out to a molex as needed.

yes, and I have the high score.

I prefer the left.

I guess I'm late to the party. What's up with the figure 8? Lol

#983 5 years ago
Quoted from jboner1058:

The titans are too thick and have a “sticky” texture so the mirror gets hung up. By twisting them in a figure 8 they pull slightly tighter and it clears it. Although if Titan made a size a little smaller I could always try that

Ok. I see. I have only used Titans flipper rubber so I don't have any experience with the normal rubbers. So I guess going down a 1/4 or 1/2 inch in size to get them to pull tighter is not an option?

Quoted from jboner1058:

Put in the flippers and Had a terrifying airball off the organ target about a foot in the air and onto the playfield. I’m afraid to play this game. Knew I would be.

On my last restore I used a harder foam pad behind the switch. I was afraid it would interfere with switch contact but they register fine but they do not bend back much keeping the "ramp" effect to a minimum. I do not get air balls from the switches anymore.

I got some crazy offers on my Fire and BTTF but they are not going anywhere.
