Sounds good man! I will say this, the game is a dust magnet and the playfield shows everything. I’ve cleaned it at least three times in the last 2 months.

Sounds like you could use a room air purifier.

Hello POTO friends. Can anyone tell me whether the ball deflector under the organ ramp should have any kind of spring on it? Mine came that way, with a spring to keep it from flipping up and getting stuck. now the spring has disintegrated. Any photos would help too. Thanks!

No... just a hinged flap.

So now that the game is done, its time to move on to the real fun. Making the topper. After toying around with a couple of designs ive drawn up, ive got it narrowed down to two that I like. One will be a set of 19th century French carriage lanterns with large LED flame bulbs that will require tying into the AC power in the cab right before the transformer. The other would be a smaller candelabra with LED flicker bulbs with the phantoms mask in front of them.

Anyone interested in a GIzmo led smoother for GI for system 11 and data east? It’s to kill the strobe effect in the GI when the lights flicker on and off and makes them shut off more like incandescents. I’ve decided to put in something a little more programmable in phantom so I can program all 4 GI strings separately to fade and flicker easier with my topper I’m working on. Asking $50 for it and it’s maybe been used a total of 3 hours. I’d include shipping for free if within the US.

I would be interested. Is this somethign that is plug and play? I already have LED's in my Phantom and this might make them more appealing to me. You can PM me if that is easier, or email me at wmspins@gmail.com

Thanks!

What about a chandelier that falls on their head during the game? Hehe

Progress. I’m gonna use a flame bulb tied in to the playfield candles and add a warm flasher tied to the either the playfield face or the under organ flasher

#1113 1 year ago

I also need to make a wood pedestal base for this in order to run the wires nicely and I’m looking for some old organ pipes

These pics are from his site, but Cliffy now has protectors. I know I’m gonna have to use the mirror one because the clear is getting chipped up on that hole and my old one was pretty much destroyed on my original playfield

Has anyone reproduced the Excellence in Quality sticker or does anyone have an extra one for sale?

I have an image of what it looks like but I haven’t gotten around to making a close reproduction of it yet. Found some similar paper to print it on but I’ve been knee deep in working on a new project to get back to the little odds and ends extra stuff on phantom. I’m working with the DE-10 nano fpga board making some pretty awesome retro computing stuff. If you guys like video machines look up the “Mister” project on YouTube. It’s basically a board that can emulate tons of 80s arcade, console, and computer circuit boards EXACTLY like the original hardware since it uses hardware emulation instead of software. Gonna stuff it all into a Commodore Pet64 body with a replaced 9” pvm tube and chassis. Then after that I’ll get back to this cursed phantom and do the bells and whistles

As many POTO as I have seen that had the center insert burned there is a need for these. My double scoring is torched too and apparently that was a common failure on the game. The waterslide decals you made look good.

is there a file uploaded for the decals, im working on one thats really burnt...Thanks.

someone added like 3 layers of mylar over the burnt insert, thats the bubbling..

Finally getting around to this. I’ve been working on tons of other game restorations and have a break for a bit. I have to perform some surgery on Phantom. After a year of playing it the mirror hole got beat up. I will re-glue the wood and remove the cracked clear, drop some new clear coat in the cracks, polish and blend the damage out, and add a stainless steel protector around the hole so this doesn’t happen again. Every time someone asks me to get them a pinball machine, I ask if they have a second job to keep it running. Even new machines right out of the box will break at any random time. It’s just the nature of having a steel ball beating around wood and plastic with high voltage added to the mix. If I don’t want to play it for fear of it breaking, why did I drop 8k into restoring it for 3 years. Such a poor hole design with no tapered edges they pretty much self destruct at under 100 plays.

Is that the only damage? How is the dimpling?

#1128 1 year ago

This is the airball king game and no real dimples on the hardwood. But I am getting a couple of dimple ghosts on the inserts where the air balls have landed. And they hit hard. The balls spend more time in the air than the playfield half the time lol.

#1129 1 year ago

Fixed. Can’t even tell.

So Ron does nice work. Great to hear.

#1131 1 year ago

Yeah it has held up really well. The inserts were funky on my old playfield too and again the balls catch air like crazy on this game because of the high polish (plus super polished balls). No different than any modern stern with insert ghosting but no playfield dimples at all. This area was just high impact in general that got damaged, and the sharp angle of the cuts of the hole is unforgiving

Well there goes the theory of a steel ball on wood, a god clear coat will do wonders at reducing dimples.

I have a good machinist that "fix" parts like that.
So you can "keep" the OEM look.

My dads a machinist. He makes a couple parts here and there for me. This one was also used on system 11 games so it shouldn’t be too hard to replace. Those two posts really get the brunt force from the ball. Pinball life has them for 4.50 but I’m gonna see if anyone’s got a couple at York tomorrow first.

Revisiting a project I started 2 years ago and didn’t finish... there’s a lot of those piled up around here. Maybe I can make a video series for my AV kids to watch while they are stuck at home and missing AV meetings and events thanks to corona closing school. Added some weathering to the glass and disassembled a firebulb to find its voltage using tips from Adam Savage. I need to design a simple a step down transformer to go from 6.3 volts to 3v to let the phantom pinballs GI lights power it as a topper. Coat or flat paint and some black splotches, then I’ll hit it with the gold rub and buff wax and see how it comes out.

May not be the best place for the question, but since many of you have torn down and redone your POTO’s, someone should know here. My magic mirror sticks when it goes back because of the friction on the rubbers from the posts behind it. Is there a different, thinner rubber that goes on those posts to prevent the snagging?

Also if anyone has an extra magic mirror decal and a magic mirror plastic (only the front one), I would be interested.

I guess one more question while I’m at it... I read through most of the 23 pages on this post but didn’t see a general consensus on the best paints to use for the gold and black areas. I’m not super artistic, but want to touch up a few areas since you guys inspired me and provided excellent reference art!

Most people figure eight the rubber to make room, just lift it off the back post and give it a half twist. You can also pinch the little metal tab on the top of left post of the mirror so mirror will be more straight up and down.

I’ll try the figure 8, thanks!

I guess while we are at it, what is the left VUK area supposed to look like? This was a project machine that I am really just getting into now, even though I have had the machine for quite a few years now.

It looks like the operator just screwed into the PF and used whatever rubber they had...

Looks like your missing a wire form. Mine isn't completely stock as someone added a screw to hold the wireform and I added some rubber to stop the balls from sometimes stacking on top of each other.

Thanks JB,

I’m not looking to clear coat. This is going to be a player machine, unless shelter in place orders go 12+ months . I will probably just touch up and Mylar this one.

Can anyone confirm that the organ does not utilize a spring? When I first got mine it had a spring between the notch on the lift arm and motor attachment stubout behind the lock pin. From everything I have seen it shouldn’t have been there. I also was having trouble getting it to close fully, leading to not being able to get to the drop targets on top.

I believe the lift arm was on upside down as it had the elongated opening on the motor side Below the play field and the small opening on the top of the organ attached at the screw and lock washer on the right side. When I flipped that around it worked without the spring, however it still wasn’t closing all the way.

Today I removed the black ball catch and side brackets from under the organ and reassembled it. The organ opened and closed fully without issue, however it could not catch a ball without the back diverter and every time a drop target shot was made, the organ tipped backwards quite a bit and opened up. So much so that the targets didn’t register sometimes.

What am I missing? The motor itself and the switches work fine, there is something physical/mechanical interfering... perhaps there is a wrong part in there since it seems to be the MO of whoever routed it years ago.

I also had an NOS ball catch that I tried today and no luck, although it was attached to the same side brackets, so if they are the problem then I wouldn’t know, but they look correct compared to pictures online.

#1150 59 days ago

It def needs a spring because if you don’t have one the ball force hitting the note targets will pop the ramp up
