After about 50 plays, the Organ mechanism is now stuck...the door won't close. It just struggles to close over and over. I'm sure I'm not the first owner to get this problem...can someone advise on corrective action? I'm not much of a motor-mechanism guy. Do I need to buy a new motor for it? Youtube video demo of the problem and pics enclosed... Help!

Check this set screw and make sure it's tight on the shaft (2).

If that's ok, take the clip off this shaft (1) and free the lever from the motor assembly. You may need to dismount the assembly from the playfield to get it loose. Then turn it on and see if it still fails. Work the lever by hand to make sure the door is not in a mechanical bind.

It appears there's a lot of wobble here (2)that could be causing or exacerbating the problem.

Report back what you discover.

Okay, I checked the set screw...very tight.

Checked the mechanism movement by hand, very smooth.

I pulled the motor out of the assembly and ran it in test mode...the motor itself is binding / stuttering. So it needs to be replaced. Problem is, the specific motor is SOLD OUT pretty much everywhere on the planet. The motor is DE part 515-5256-00-08 made by Bowman Motor, 24V 60 HZ 3W 11 RPM CCW. I can't find anyone that has these in stock : (

I would be tempted to crack that motor open and see if there's gears in there that can be replaced.

Cody,

Any time I see your name, I know INTELLIGENCE is going to be there!

I can't help but admire all the things you help people with on here. I own a POTO and I was interested in reading this in case I have the same problem some day.

Thanks Cody. Another great 'southerner'!

Hey, thanks, Mike.

I'm just trying to do my part in keeping the pinball industry and hobby healthy.

If we both make it to the Southern Fried Gameroom Expo this year look me up and we'll toast to pinball!

I ordered from Marco the WMS part 14-7941 which is the exact same motor but runs clockwise instead of counter clockwise. I think it will work fine if I understand this mechanism and the associated switches correctly. I don't think cracking open the old motor and replacing gears would be that easy. Possible yes, but not easy.

Correction, it was actually the Marco 14-7941-3 that I purchased.

Well, not much activity on this thread, but I learned a lot and will share my information for future issues other people might have.

The problem was indeed the motor. The gears were locking up and chattering. The moter is a Data East part# 515-5256-00-08 by Bowman Motor, 24V, 60hz, 3W, 11 RPM, CCW. Guess what - nobody worldwide sells this anymore! Even web sites that say it is in stock don't really have it. I ended up getting the Marco Specialties Part 14-7941-3 for about $40. This is intended as a motor for Williams games like BK2000 and Cyclone. It has most of the correct specs...24V, 11 rpm, 60 hz, and it runs Counter Clockwise CCW. The pictures of the original motor is on the left and the replacement new motor on the right.

Unfortunately the only thing wrong with this new motor is that the connecting shaft is about 3-4 mm larger in diameter. That was not much of a problem though. I simply took the connecting collar on the linkage assembly and drilled its hole a little larger using a 1/4" drill bit. Took 2 seconds and fits perfectly now. For reference, here's a picture again of how the collar and linkage fits to the motor..

I actually found a total of (6), count em, SIX things wrong with the organ. In addition to this motor problem, the green wire on the lower limit switch was broken off and needed to be re-soldered. Then, the thing operated but kept missing the upper limit switch. Simply bending the upper limit switch a little fixed that problem. Then, I found one of the wedge bulbs on the top cover was not lighting up. It was a broken wire. I also noticed the bulb wires that feed down behind the organ and under the playfield were snagging on the stand up targets as the organ opens and closes. I put a spiral wire sleeve over my solder repair and over the bulb wires to protect further snagging on the drop targets during organ movements. Pictured:

Also, there was a sheet metal screw put into the top cover of the organ by someone...WHYYYY?

Lastly, I obtained some new organ decals from ebay and then put mylar over them to protect them for the long term. Great that these NOS decals can still be found for sale after all these years.

I now feel like I know this troublesome game feature pretty well. If anyone has problems and would like some input, send me a post or PM.

Very nicely done. Those were nice and easy fix's, but 6.....that's a lot. Did ya ever figure why someone put a screw through the front?

#17 8 years ago

i can only guess the organ top cover was hitting the organ door as it raises and someone thought a screw as a doorstop was the right approach. my new decal hides the screw hole thankfully.

I know this is an old topic, but since you worked so in depth on the organ, would you happen to know how to fix the organ from sitting open a few millimeters while closed? It opens and closes as it should but never actually touches the playfield, so a ball hit at it actually can’t get up to the targets. The spring looks worn but I can find a part number for it. Any suggestions? Thanks

Since buying one of these units a couple years ago, I have found these resources invaluable. I recently had my organ motor die as well, and thankfully Marco Spec. has them now.
