The touch most of my games get is refinished playfield side rails. I like how it evens out the finish and brings them in line with the playfield finish.

I remove the lane guides (which is a real PITA but gets to be less of a PITA once you have done a few), sand them down well, and then shoot them with a few coats of clear acrylic. Fine sand and wipe between coats and the above pictures show what you get.

It really bothers me to see a nicely cleaned polished and waxed playfield next to stained side rails.

Looks absolutely brilliant MikeO. I am just going through my El Dorado & whilst I waxed the side rails is was not enough. Your approach is spot on so on to it tomorrow. Thks for the tip.

Be careful on removing the lane guides if you go that far. Let me know if you need advice on getting them off.

those are a royal pita to get off without killing them...
i used your suggestion to do this (i think i read it from you on an old post either here or at another place)... since i was too much of a weenie to take the lane guides off, i taped them off REAL good... still would have been better to take them off, but i didn't trust myself not to mangle them...
someone needs to repro lane guides...

In getting them off they do get somewhat deformed. Either around the nail holes or long bends in general. All of the deformations can be straightened with little effort.

Gripping the twist nail heads once they can be grabbed with a vise grip and pulling them out with a twist motion doesn't damage the twist nails.

The biggest advantage is you can best clean the lane guides.

Try adding the 5" bell assembly to ring on just the "1,000's," and leave the chime there ringing on "100's." This gives you 3 distinct sounds making game play feel more exciting. Very easy to do: Mount in the cabinet, daisy in the common wire from the chime-knocker, remove the chime wire from the 1,000's relay and tie back, run new wire to the other side of the new bell coil, done.
The scoring thresholds on the game will work the hell out of all 3 sounds, should add a nice touch to the overall play.

I did just this to my Drop A Card a decade ago. Being the game has 2" flippers, and the 100s are the big score on the game, it seemed right that the 100s provide a large bell gong instead of the large chime bar. It fits right in.

Not really a modification but how many nice coin doors have drill holes? So there's a guy out if MO who sells nickel plated plugs in EBay, 5 bucks for 4 plugs free shipping.
IMHO they really match up well with original Gottlieb coin doors (64-75) plus it saves them from being too crappy for a nicer Wedgehead. In my case I just saved a one hole door off an AAB pin, they are the hardest to find and are not being reproduced.

You can also find these in the specialty drawers at Ace Hardware and the like and buy them one at a time.

I have a gorgeous original door on my Quick Draw that has one of these plugs where they drilled and installed a switch and wired it to put credits on the game instead of just closing the switch on the credit unit.

As you say, saved another nice door.
