I’m happy to announce that Paul Faris has joined the deeproot pinball team. Paul is legendary in the pinball world for his hand-painted backglasses. Paul will be working on several games, but I’m most excited to be working with him on my original theme pinball game. It’s a theme that we are both passionate about, and I think the pinball world will love it. I’ve had the good fortune to work with many of the great pinball artists including Tony Ramunni, Pat McMahan, Kevin O’Connor, John Youssi, and Greg Freres. Now, Paul will do a hand painted backglass for my deeproot game. I want to thank Robert for bringing him on board, and for allowing me to do one of my dream themes for pinball.

You guys really are planning on taking over aren't you?

Whatever happened to that guy anyway?

    #4 5 years ago

Can’t wait to read more about your new game!

    #6 5 years ago

Paul is by far my favorite artist. Centaur, Xenon, Space Invaders, Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein, Paragon, Lost World, Andromeda, Grand Lizard (prototype), etc. Glad to hear he's back doing artwork again!

Thank you! I've seen the question raised on pinside a couple times, but there isn't much info if you do a search. He may prefer being off the radar. Probably not the worst idea.

Boy if this company didn't have Jpoop on board we would all be cheering them along every step of the way. That and if the owner had a bit less hubris.

    #11 5 years ago

Why just the backglass? Did/does Paul not do playfields?

Is this the breadcrumb to confirming deeproot = video pinball??

Actually, he's doing the whole package, backglass, cabinet, playfield and plastics.

A centaur meets xenon would be a great themed pinball.

    #14 5 years ago

Man they are really gettin' the band back together!

I hear Wayne Neyens is still alive - and looking spry!

    #15 5 years ago

Pinball art for new generations of players and collectors. No one can fault Deeproot wanting to obtain good talent.

new is great, but dont knock on some of the greatest of all time.

A long break and a desire to leave a mark beyond vacation america as your last pinball art could be the driving force for great things!

    Sweet! That's much better!

    #18 5 years ago

Damn... all this payroll and no product. Deeproot has some Deeppockets.

    #19 5 years ago

Great news, he is one the best. He does nice splash pieces in center of the pf.

    #20 5 years ago

Exciting, especially as part of an original theme. I wasn't a fan of his work when he was just asked to draw various scenes from movies, which were cropped together, but he produced some really iconic stuff in the 70s and 80s.

    Only if it’s wider.

    #27 5 years ago

Hopefully Deeproot's not on that "family friendly" kick that seems to be permeating the pinball industry as of late.

    #28 5 years ago

    Such Great News!!
    Paul if your reading this
My daughter and I wish you the best!!
I hope you kill it with some skulls, crossbones and centars haha
    Best
    Mike

The Deeproot team gains another allstar. Can't wait to see what they create.

    #30 5 years ago

    Awesome!

    #32 5 years ago

This is great news - Deeproot really looks like they're ready to take on the pinball giants! As I'm a big fan of Dennis' designs, the bad news is that I'll have to take on a 4th job soon to buy Elvira first, then likely his Deeproot "dream theme" game when it is released!

Hopefully they can put pinball back into the glory days of theme, artwork, and design, because the other guys sure aren't doing it.

Who else would like to see more games produced along the lines of the early 80's style games.
non-licensed themes, killer artwork, fun yet simple playfields and at a good price. I thought TNA was close but didn't like the way the playfield was split up and price was a real bummer. Ok, go ahead and say it o-din I'm still stuck in the 80's but man I love those classic pins.

In 2018 nobody can make an 80s style
Game for 80s style prices and make money. That’s not how it works. What’s saving money? A couple plastic ramps? Think about all the coils in TNA’s drop target mech and tell me it’s cheaper than a plastic ramp.

    It’s not.

    #37 5 years ago

If he's doing art like he was cranking out in the 80's I'm all over it. If it's the crappy data east and sega stuff, no thanks.

Maybe Judas Priest pin is coming from Deeproot and he's channeling Centaur again for the art.

    #38 5 years ago

Awesome news Paul is one of the best and his work speaks for itself, some of my favourite pinball artwork in that list, excited to see what he comes up with next.

    #39 5 years ago

Wow the dream team! My favorite artist teaming up with my favorite designer...I can't wait to see this one!

I'm so happy for Paul! New England had the pleasure of having Paul as our 2018 Pintastic artist. Check out his seminar on you tube. Here was his amazing poster art and key chain this year.

Centaur artwork is my favorite from the 80's machines.

    It’s not.

It does not need to be done for 80s style prices. 90s or hell even 2000s style prices would be fine at this point.

I call BS that a company cant make a street level game with alphanumeric displays (or LCD that just does scores) and do it all for cheaper.
All the companies keep talking about the manufacturing being the hard part. All companies keep talking about the additional staff needed for development due to needed experts in so many areas with modern games.

Make a real street level game with a good design, great art, simple to assemble (p-roc or node boards) and you will cut down on # of parts to design and assemble, development time, and overall complexity.

Sure TNA is not cheaper, but TNA is a completely modern game on the platform of a street level.

People love the classic Bally and Sterns from the 80s. It can be done for under 4500 by someone that wants to. Art and design sell, so do those well and it will sell great.

I tend to agree. TNA may look like an 80s game but still has a premium drop mech, color changing GI, a lcd, sub, and obviously the programming of the superb light show, screen, and soundtrack.

I ended up playing my Gorgar a shit ton last night and thought that’s what I’d love for a new game is a back-to-basics 80s game that doesn’t need all the things that makes TNA $6k.

Sure I can just go get more 80s games, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a market for fun, simple NIB games. You know, like Mafia, but better looking and at a realistic price.

Congrats to DeepRoot for picking up - IMHO - the absolute best pinball artist of all time!!

...almost makes me want to forgive them for hiring jpop. Almost.

still amazes me that this company does not just can Jpop!

What is the possible reason for keeping him on? I see zero benefit. He obviously needs lots of babysetting, carries a huge liability from people still not willing to support the company due to the affiliation, he is a mediocre designer in the grand scheme of things, and frankly he is a dick.

I believe there’s a game that fits that bill - Mafia!

Oh wait, it’s more than TNA.

Just saying all this doesn't make it so.

Perhaps you should start a new pinball company and churn out a bunch of 80s style games for $4500. We need more pinball companies!

I'd advise you stay away from the words "street level" in your marketing though, considering how badly Gottlieb failed with the concept in the early 90s.
