Tough one.
Whirlwind is probably my favorite because it has the first "wizard mode" and was the first game to take advantage of 3 senses. Sight. Sound. And touch (with wind blowing on you during critical gameplay situations).
Whirlwind set the bar.

ww has the first wizard mode?
cool, that is news to me, thnks.

I believe the "Mega Door Bonus" is considered the first wizard mode in pinball.
But don't quote me on that
i'm not saying that WW is bad at all but I am surprised how often people say they love that pin. It's only okay in my book. I remember WW and ES back when they were pretty new in the arcade days, I found myself playing ES more often because it was just so crazy!
I think one of best is Banzai Run. It was way outside the box with that upper playfield. His best would have to be TAF or Funhouse because of how cutting edge they were, and Funhouse tuned in, is a pinball marvel. TZ is right there as well.
As for his worst, I'm going with RCT. I don't know what he was thinking with that one.

I have them sitting next to each other and let's just say ES isn't getting a whole lot of love right now. Not that it's a bad game, but WW is fricken incredible. I put FH a close second and TAF a distant third. I'm a DMD guy, but WW is just that good. Need to play RBION some day though.
Quoted from tamoore:My favorite pinball game is Whirlwind, so I have to go with that.
You and Shanetastic would get along Very Well.. He Top'd his High Score the other nite w/ 100M
and he Got a Jackpot during the Tornado Siren .. I Hope he Chimes in on this Thread ..
Quoted from Wolfmarsh:Nascar should be on the list.
I agree, thanks for mentioning.
Whirlwind and Funhouse
love those Granner tunes during the 2 ball mutiballs, gets my adrenaline pumping. I dont dance..ever..but have been caught by my wife dancing to these games lol

I thought Black Knight 2000's The King's Ransom was the first of these.
Quoted from Finrod:I thought Black Knight 2000's The King's Ransom was the first of these.
Could be.
I had read somewhere the Whirlwind was the first game with wizard mode.
Anyone out there know if that's true or not.

Finrod is correct. Black Knight 2000 came out a year before Whirlwind and was the first to have a wizard mode (King's Ransom).

Sweet.
Thanks for confirming.
Never played BK2000.
Look forward to taking it for a spin someday.

That's funny, I was dancing to the WW high score music today. Love that tune.
For me this goes:
1. No good gofers
2. Twilight Zone
3. Ripleys
4. Safe cracker
5. Roller coaster tycoon
6. NASCAR
7. Whirlwind
8. Roadshow
9. Shrek / Family guy
10. Funhouse
11. Adams family
12. Banzai Run
I find TZ too complex to get a firm grip on the strategy for getting the best score... too may variables involved to know how to attack the game for me... stacking can be great, but the way it's done here just makes the game too messy for my simple mind... It becomes like a game of chess...
The question was the best game for the year it was made, in that context, it's not even close, TAF was a game changer, much like High Speed and Space Shuttle were in the 80's.
All the great games from B/W owe a debt to Addams, if you were an operator at that time, or a hobbyist, you know, there was definitely a reason it is the biggest selling modern pin
