Try adjusting the pitch.
On mine, I find that I can reach the ball with my right flipper when it is extended midways through the arc.
I used to try to nudge it as it exited the waterfall by smacking the right front in hopes of knocking it over to the left flipper but now that I have my timing down pat I just use the technique described above. It also means my hand hurts less often.
