Thank you

I believe bgresto.com has done Paragon already so if you're okay with it not being original you can get a brand new one there.

I picked up a project Paragon two weeks ago. I have cleaned up the playefield and it doesn't look bad. The number 3 plastic is a bit roached on the bottom but other than that colors and paint are good. I need a good backglass. I am waiting on rebuild kits for the boards to get it up and running.

For anyone who knows me, this will be a facepalm...I'm going to get another Paragon tomorrow.

Probably my 5th or 6th. I keep buying one, and upgrading. And for the moment, I purchased a Kruzman playfield a few years ago, and was getting it swapped to put into the nice cabinet I got 2 years back. But fate has smiled on me and I'm picking up a very nearly HUO one tomorrow.

What can you tell us, if anything, about the post between the flippers, the right in/out lanes and the "shoot again opens gate" in the right outlane with the red and green inserts? Never seen anything like that on a Paragon before.

Yeah that gate thing and post in the middle is odd. I've never seen anything like that on a paragon

The flippers and post are for foreign games.
Note: the top right flipper is not a drain.
I think that playfield is a sample game.

I'd like to see a more complete pic of the lower right of the playfield. Quite a find.

So jealous. I've been looking for a Paragon for over 2 years. Can't ever find one within a few hours of me. One came up once about an hour from me and it sold so quick, called the seller same day he put the ad up and it was already gone. Besides pinside and craigslist, is there any advice to tracking one of these down at a reasonable price?

Nice find Greg. Yep, looks like foreign spec game. I'd plug that center post (temporary of course).

Still have my second Paragon as my player, and your beater Paragon awaiting a Kruzman NOS pf swap, stencil, and all the rest....

Enjoy.

Did the foreign spec ones have the post? I figured someone stuck a post there.

#319 3 years ago

So...yeah, it's home now. Picked it up this morning. Second owner, still with the receipt and original paperwork.
Besides the post in the PF, the only issue is the red has pinked a bit, but the cabinet is fantastic with no major bumps, scrapes, or scratches. Great condition, and, shockingly, the original battery is still intact. Has all the signs of being HUO, especially the backbox light panel which has none of the usual soot trails.

Here's a question though...

This hasn't been in any of my previous Paragons, but this one has it, and it's got me scratching my head. It's a 2518-66 solenoid expander, but that supposedly was never used in a Paragon. The board itself is definitely a Bally board and looks like it's been in there for quite a while. It's wired in a bit weirdly, and seems to be the only wiring hackishness in the game.

Ill be honest, I haven't chased it down yet to see what it's plugged into. So I'm 100% being lazy, and I know nobody can tell me what it's hooked up to.

#322 3 years ago

What a wonderful example of an original you have unearthed, congrats.
My guess for the extra board is to control that wire gate on the right outlane.
Does it have the solid red post holding up the left side of the spinner?

Nope, just two translucent reds.

Interesting to see the spinner support wireform is yellow. Maybe they are all yellow, I just never noticed....

This Paragon is a hacked mod that was done in early 1980's, it
had to be bone after Eight Ball Deluxe. It is a great mod.
If you score Extra ball the gate will open and you can continue
playing the game and continue adding to the bonus and total score.
If and only if you happen to drain the ball on the right side. The
lamps have got to be tied to the gate relay and the gate relay is
tied to the solenoid expander relay that is activated by one of
the extra ball SCRs.

#325 3 years ago
Quoted from TimeWarp1:

Quick question. When the ball lands in the golden cliffs saucer does anybody notice the coin lockout coil toggle on and off? Just curious if this is normal behavior or something I need to look into. Thanks

OP may not see this after 11 months but that's normal operation. The lockout also toggles off during bonus count (as do all early SS Ballys IIRC). Why it's programmed to do that I don't know.

Quoted from vec-tor:

It would be fun to implement this mod exactly as if the factory had done it. For hardware, put an additional wire and molex pin in the harness to connect the ball-saver gate to J2 pin 15 on the solenoid driver board. This will allow Q18 (unused on a stock Paragon) to control the ball gate.

Then change the game program to accommodate the new rule. Of course the rule could be made differently from just "open the gate when shoot again is lit" if desired.

This would eliminate the need for the solenoid expander relay and associated hack wiring.

#327 3 years ago

Can I please get a close up pic of the opening and closing gate on the playfield

Here's how the mod/hack is wired....
The board has 2 sets of leads. Two are speaker wire and then a red and green.
IMG_20170116_160005 (resized).jpg
Here's the overview of where those wires go.

Close-up of the gate coil. Here's one set of leads from the relay board.
IMG_20170118_194735 (resized).jpg
And the other set is tied to the extra ball lamp socket.
IMG_20170118_194739 (resized).jpg

And lastly here's a REALLY horrible video. Sorry, it was one-handed and I unplugged the speakers to try to keep the sound down a bit.

New Paragon owner here. This one is going to take a bit of work but playfield in decent condition due to Mylar. Only needs touchup in a few places. There was a small amount of what I presume was mold on some of the inserts. Only a tiny bit of planking by one of the kickout holes. Backglass essentially perfect. $500. Needs a new MPU and some playfield work but overall in nice shape

Looking for a lockdown bar. Thanks!!

#343 3 years ago

I will be joining the club on Friday...very excited.

Is anyone interested in getting a group order for a PDI glass that fits this pin? I have four standard size sheets on my pins at home and I think it is one of the best mods you can do for a game.

I would like to order a PDI sheet but Joey from pinballdecals said we need a minimum order of 5 to have a custom order done. Does anyone have the exact directions in mm's for the glass?

Or does anyone know if invisiglass from Jersey jack could make this custom size?

Thanks,

Pete

Ok I am waiting on confirmation from Joey to see if this larger size can be done. If we can I'll start another post to see if anyone else wants in. How many other games have this glass size? Future Spa, embryon, space invaders?

#347 3 years ago

Not looking hard for a game, as I've just bought a new machine and need to lay off for a while, but started passively looking to see what Paragon games might be available. Found one on eBay for the low low price of $4000

Keep an eye out. I hate to say it, but that's on the high end, but not totally out of the realm of possibilities. I know of several restored ones (restored playfield, repainted cabinet) that went in the high 3's. But you can find a nice player for $1k-1500.

#349 3 years ago
Quoted from NJGecko:

Yeah that's why I started sort of passively looking. I shouldn't buy more machines right now, but $1k isn't really a pain.

I was able to purchase a custom-sized sheet for my Paragon several years ago, so hopefully that option is still available.
