Thought it was about time I made a first post in the club.
I'm currently working on refurbishing a Paragon in a separate thread:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/project-paragon-breathing-life-back-into-the-beast

A couple select pictures, currently at the playfield clear coating stage.

Only the wire form.

#653 1 year ago

If your manual has a part number for the wire form only, you can see if Marco's stocks a repro. I have a parts catalog for Paragon and a couple of other early Bally titles. I'll check to see if the part numbers are listed there.

You can buy a wire bending jig and straight wire from Marco's. Get a fellow Paragon owner to give you some pictures and take some measurements so that you can build your own wire forms. https://www.marcospecialties.com/control/keywordsearch?SEARCH_STRING=wire+bending

Hey all - I'm not a Paragon owner unfortunately but thought it was cool that Shailene Woodley can be seen playing a Paragon in this still from the upcoming Drake Doremus film. Eight Ball Deluxe in there playing second fiddle. Can't confidently make out the others.

Only 120 points on ball 2? Is she even flipping the ball?!

Seems like something funky is going on the with the display anyway.

Thinking about listing my machine soon, in case there are lurkers nearby that are looking to join the club

Bit of Friday trivia for you. As you progress the Golden Cliffs, it plays more and more of a tune. Anyone know the name of the tune? Under the radar this makes Paragon the very first pinball to have a tune-building sequence. Playboy is usually credited being the first because of the well-known tune, but in fact this honor goes to Paragon!

I'll post the answer later if nobody guesses.

#658 1 year ago

Has anyone heard anything from CPR about how the new digital printing may impact the wait for the new playfield?

I thought Playboy predated Paragon, but please do post the name. I can’t place it, even though I’ve heard it all these years.

I may be able to loan some of my friends paragon (he has two) to copy them... that may be the best option.

"The Worm" -- Ohio Players

It was supposedly a catchy song on the radio when they were programming the sounds for the game.

Looking for a bit of Paragon history myself. I recall seeing Greg Kmiec standing next to a Paragon game in a photo. In that photo the Paragon had a Bally "Flying Ball" logo affixed to the top of the head. That game is now in my collection and I'd really like to have a copy of that photo. It may have appeared in a trade magazine, but for the life of me I've not been able to find it back.

New to the club today!!!
I found this Paragon in a local auction after a tip from a friend. It looks like it’s been in storage for at least 20 years. The newest quarter in the coin box is dated 1995. I can’t wait to get everything back into working order.

I’m new to this generation of pins. Is there a good bullet-proofing thread for the boards? What’s to be done about that leaky battery situation?

#669 1 year ago

Here's a few places to start. Basically you need to repin the connectors on the boards in the backbox if they haven't already been done or intermittent connections will drive you crazy.

I replaced my batteries with super caps.

=================FREE ALERT================
Ok gents ... FREE to a club member in need. I have a Paragon backglass that's pretty ugly up close (seriously bubbled with touch-ups and fade, but looks decent once lit up. Pickup only in Northern NJ ... sorry, just can't swing the time, hassle or risk to ship this.
Here's a far-away shot ... sorry, it's all I have.
[quoted image]
EDIT ... correction, forgot I took these two...

[quoted image]
[quoted image]

If you order a new Backglass from CPR make sure to specify the thickness. Their default is 3mm, Paragon originals are printed on 5mm. 3mm is fine but then you need to spend $45 bucks for a new lift rail and trim. They are perfect of course.

You mean even longer than the 5+ years we have already been waiting for this playfield? I wish Mirco would just do it at this point.

Are you saying the CPR backglass for paragon is perfect?

#674 1 year ago

I could use a new backglass too... prior threads dissed the colour of the cpr backglasses... are these a new batch? Or part of their new ability to print one at a time as needed instead of batches?

Was looking for feedback on them before purchasing ...

#675 1 year ago
Quoted from Toads:

I am happy enough with what they sent. If they would answer their e-mails in a timely fashion I would have had it printed on 5mm glass. Wayne told me I could either return it paying shipping both ways or buy a new trim kit. I recondition and resell games so I went with just buying a trim kit. Live and learn I guess. I am not sure it is perfect, the one that came with my game is so shot it will only take a small amount of work to make it a clear glass. Hence, I don't have anything to compare it with. If yours is shot, this has to be better than the translate version. I guess it would depend on the condition of the game as to which way to go there. The game I have has a very nice cabinet and a pretty good PF.

Here is the finished product. The machine will move into my gameroom tonight for a long stay. I put a playfield protector in it and waxed the protector. The game is playing super fast. Hopefully it will slow down some soon!

One more picture. I decided to design and 3D print a new finger guard for the transformer rather than make one out of metal. It's a little different than the factory unit, but it works and looks good. I'm still learning this whole 3D printer thing and this was good practice.

Certainly.

There was a connector that needed the pins cleaned. I brushed them with a small toothbrush.

My game is 100% LEDs. I buy LEDs in 100 packs from Comet, so not sure how many. I used "sunlight", which is between natural and warm white. Sunlight looks really great in this game. I used the frosted 1-SMD in the GI and in the bigger inserts. I used the frosted 1-SMD retro in the back box and all of the smaller inserts. The retro are not quite as bright. If you want to just use one type of bulb everywhere I'd go with the 1SMD and no retro.
You probably also want to upgrade the light board in the back box or the insert LEDs will flicker and look terrible. I have the Alltek board, but the daughter boards sold at Comet work fine too.

Finally remembering to post my "Finished" pictures here.
Love the way it looks, love the way it plays, even liking the sounds the more games I get in. I should be in the club for awhile!

Thanks!

Those are just new blank Bally drop targets with decals installed that I had made. Same scenario with the explosion drops and Spinner. Hopefully the purists will allow it!

I got sunlight frosted and the daughterboard. Once i receive and install them, i will share pics.

I recently got a Paragon (about a couple of weeks ago) and I have been doing some upgrades. Cleaning and waxing of course...but I added an nvram chip, new locks and keys, cool key fob, shooter rod assembly, bally coin door sticker, pop bumper caps, ninja high polish pinball, manual, metal coin box, rubbers, LEDs and non-flicker daughterboard. As promised, I have pics below.

I went with Comet pinball because they are the BEST (thank you @ryanwanger )
After going through a few test bulbs, I went with clear natural white for inserts and frosted sunlight white for the GI and backbox. I wish I would have used the flexible/adjustable 2-head LEDs to brighten up the entire area of the rollover stars...but I may order those later.

Wow! Some great stuff on this thread. I really like the John_I recolor, repaint - speckled too damn cool. Takes balls to roll the dice like that. I also like the drop targets and spinner shown on TractorDoc's game. Are those from Jeff? If not, can you provide info on where somebody could buy them? Really makes me wish I hadn't put mine up FA: Item ID: 202730246295 Closing Thursday (7-18-2019) night. Nice game IMHO.

As of today there is only one other on eBarf. His ad is a bit confusing though. From the other guys ad: 1979 Paragon pinball machine used but works great! There is some dim lighting around the score areas, could use a couple of new fuses. Zero feedback seller, Hmmmmm.

Just joined the club! Recently purchased mine from NJGecko (Greg) It was documented previously on page 7 of this thread due to the strange diverter gate mod that it has. Lots of cool reading on here.
