Hi guys. I'm getting reading to repaint a Bally Star Trek.

I've got it all stripped down and primed with Kilzs Original Primer. I'm using H.D. paint- Behr Marquee Interior/ Exterior Semi-gloss Enamel latex paint. Of course I've got the stencils and I'm ready to go.

But I got to thinking about maybe it was better to simply roll the paint on vs. spray it on with my HVLP sprayer?

Rolling: I've used a mini roller in the past with semi gloss paint with good results- I like the way it covers and results in a thick rich layer of paint. That's great especially good for the first color coat without stencils- but clearly posses problems with the stencil in place.

Spraying: Spraying seems to not result in an as-thick layer of paint, but more professional looking end result. With spraying, I sand in between multiple coats to get a super smooth result. So the base color without stencils- that's easy to do. But once you have the stencils on, gets harder to spray multiple coats with sanding in between.

Any thoughts on where I'm going wrong, or pros and cons would be greatly appreciated.

Roll on the base coat with a smooth roller,

    Spray the stencil graphics on

I’ve painted about a dozen arcades and pinball, I’ve found that I like tenge results of rolling on the main cab color.

Then after a few days of drying, I’ll sand and roll another coat if it needs it.

Then Lay on the stencils, and spray a light coat, wait 10 minutes, spray on another coat, wait 10 minutes, spray another coat to final cover everything. Then remove the stencil after 10 minutes, I have found if I remove the stencil after drying is complete, the stencil and paint will come off together, bad news.

I seal the job with a Helmsman spar urethane and don’t sand, you can feel the edges of the stenciled on graphics, but they look oh so great

Isn't that Original Kilz oil based? You can't put latex over oil based paint.

There’s a kilz that is latex, if you use oil based, you probably need to use enamel spray paints

    #7 6 years ago

Killz is a good primer that’ll seal pretty well anything. Once dry, you’re good to use a good quality latex on top of it. If an oil paint is on a surface, a latex is not ideal on top of that. Killz and cover stain are great products to prime w over oil base..

I recently sprayed a latex paint to do my Funhouse cabinet. I was very happy with results. I used an HVLP gun. It was important to thin with water when spraying latex. I used about 10% water.

Pinball Pimp (maker of stencils) recommends just using spray paint.
Latex takes too long to dry, needs too many coats, and will not leave a crisp, consistent edge.
