Recently, I saw a few pix of a restored & modded AFM. The saucers were tastefully painted a bright pewter/silver color--looked MUCH better than the dull factory gray color. Does anyone have any tips on how this is done? Sprayed or brushed? To me, they almost looked plated but I'm sure that's not the case. I know most auto parts stores sell a chrome-type spray paint, though I've never worked with that before. The chrome might actually be a bit much. Any advice would certainly be appreciated!

I used Testors silver and thinned it with black dirty thinner to make a wash.
Brush it on and the ships are silver and the black settles in the lines.

I painted the lines black, then brushed over with acrylic silver and gray. Added some blue around the center to give it a look of motion.

I also painted the Martians with blue "innards" to match the backglass. Thought about corn yellow but that was more on RFM than AFM.

Will probably paint the little saucers too but they've got that hard-wired LED mod so won't do that until my PF swap.

Here are some instructions I grabbed from RGP back when I thought I was going to paint mine:

* clean
* apply 4 light coats
* wait overnight
* buff with a cotton rag

Here's the exact stuff I got based on others' recommendations:

Too bad you're not closer (and despite the fact we're both in VT), because I ended up with 2 cans of this stuff, despite only ordering one. What stopped me in my tracks is that I have the Ung saucer mod on my machine, and I decided I didn't want to deal with undoing and redoing all the LEDs. Maybe at some point. Regardless, I'll have twice as much paint as I need.

I ordered tbat testors spray paint too. love it!2012-08-20_12-14-20_175.jpg2012-08-20_12-14-20_175.jpg try to resist putting quick, thick coats on. Take your time and do light coats so it doesn't run.
