For that much money, I’d recommend buying a pancake compressor and an automotive paint gun. Used that combo to lay down Sherwin Williams oil - thinned, of course - and it went on perfectly.
Another upside: You’d have the compressor to use with other projects.
I primed using oil-based Kilz in a rattle can, sanding with 220 and tack clothing a couple of times.
Can also recommend buying a spray tent. Got one off of Amazon for $45. Totally worth the money not just for the overspray, but to also keep stuff (bugs, etc) off of your work.
