The wood part of my JD head section is in pretty rough shape. I am sure I can't make it look worse by trying to touch it up. Is there a specific type of paint that would be best to use or will any old black color do? I will need to use a brush to work around the artwork.

Black is black, but the gloss will vary. Rustoleum semi-gloss black is usually pretty close.
