very cool indeed, but the typical audience in those places is far from what it is here!!! Hopefully they appreciate the pins and not just want weird ticket redemption games.
Should get Arcade Matt(YouTube) to do a vid on them!

To be fair — cannon lagoon — the redemption game on p3 is pretty damn surprisingly fun. But the nice thing is that if people get tired of it, you can so easily switch it to a different software game or back module/full game.

Quoted from aingide:

Is Heads Up a new game? Or specific to D&B?

New game by multimorphic for p3 owners, debuted a while ago but hadn’t been officially purchasable yet.

Congrats Gerry! Super cool to see this, and the cab lighting is looking rad- very cool idea that works well at a location like that.

Thanks, Mike. I was watching two D&B techs test play the machines the other day, and they had the best reactions when they realized the cabinet lighting effects are integrated into gameplay. You can't really see your own cabinet's lights when playing, but you can tell what's happening on your opponent's machine for sure.

That Heads Up! cab looks great! Beautiful artwork.

Congrats on the great news Gerry!

Awesome Gerry! A win for multimorphic and pinball as a whole!

Here's my runthrough of Cannon Lagoon from last summer:

Great news, congrats Gerry!

The video is really cool too, so I'm gonna sticky this topic for a while and hope everyone sees it

Ok. First off, I wish p3 all the best. If D&B decides to put these in all of their locations, it could be a big deal for p3 but this isn't good for pinball.
D&B is garbage entertainment comprised mainly of redemption games. I can't imagine anyone in the pinball community being D&B regulars.
D&B putting in p3 is the equivalent of traveling carnies setting up a pinball machine next to the "Guess Your Age" booth at the fair. Would that be great for pinball?
I am forced to go to Dave and Busters once every two or three years for a work party and I have never heard anyone look at a machine and say "I want one of these in my home." Probably because the people that waste money at that place by definition aren't good at making financial decisions.
Maybe we could put up fliers at gas stations next to the lottery scratcher tickets, or even better yet, they could advertise at payday loan offices.
Like I said I hope p3 catches on and would like to play it someday soon. I would even consider buying one, but let's not pretend that the title of this article is basically "WE SOLD TWO MACHINES." That is a far cry from this being a big day for all of pinball.

I also want to say that I retract 100% of this statement if they negotiated an agreement that a display advertising that the p3 can be purchased by individuals and is designed for home use be put on location next to the machines in D&B. Even better if the p3 will be featured in print and other media advertising for D&B.

Speak for yourself. I love D&B and it's far from what you describe. The new Raw Thrills games are super fun as are the Star Wars pod style games. My daughter and I love to play the Ghostbusters game together. It does award tickets, but it's as much of a video game experience as anything.

#61 4 years ago

Given their reluctance against pinball — to get the P3 in there is certainly a feat and overall could signal a shift in their attitude towards pinball. So I’d say it’s good for pinball ..

#62 4 years ago

Makes sense. P3 is the closest thing to a modern arcade experience in the pinball world.

Haven't heard of this Heads Up game. Seems like Cannon Lagoon would work well too.

Agree - while I don't go in often, my kids and I have a great time.

As far as the announcement being good for pinball, think in terms of commercial operating. It's not readily going to convince someone that they need one in their home, but if a large chain like D&B buys 100s of P3s and makes that kind of financial commitment to operating... it's a big deal.

It's a lot of fun in an environment like this where multiplayer games seem to do well.

Gerry,
Did ya'll add the redemption aspect to this version of the game? Or does D&B not do ticketing systems like that?

Austin,TX guys,
When are we planning to have a group outing on a weeknight to "tourney" this game setup? I'm assuming Fri and Sat nights are "busy" for D&B.

#66 4 years ago

Please consider patching in the training mode for all your games... I don't think it's going to cost you revenue, and would be a really cool feature...

Yes

OMG. So you think that
A) There are people that have never heard of pinball.
B) These people go to Dave and Busters
C) They also don't go anywhere else where pinball machines are located
D) They are going to walk into D&B and out of all the machines go up to the p3 and then decide to put one in their home.

Have you ever gone there and then ordered a pop-a-shot or a quarter pusher the next day? Seems like a flawed logic. I guess time will tell. Just want to say again that i wish then the best, but if this doesn't result in Dave and Busters ordering hundreds of these, I don't see it having long term impact.

I don't understand your comment.

I want pinball companies to succeed. As I have stated previously, I am interested in the p3 aaaaand think it is an interesting concept. However, I have been given the impression that the biggest problem with the p3 so far is that they need sales. They aren't moving units. I just don't see how this move will result in them increasing sales.

I could be wrong, but it seems like a major part of this company's business plan should be getting as many of these in homes as possible so that they can then sell all of their additional games and accessories to those people.

I think the main point of this thread is that its a step in the right direction to get anything pinball related in a Dave and Buster (or any major arcade for that matter).
It was only a few years ago that some of the major arcade bars (namely Barcade) were arcade games only.
Pinball is going though a resurgence with more and more machines going on location all the time.
Instead of over analyzing this we should be happy for Multimorphic that their product is getting out there when the non pinball community will get exposed to it (even if its in small numbers at first).
I wind up going to Dave and Busters occasionally with the family and I know if I see one of these on location I will be playing it.

Not everything is about selling games to collectors, it's also about more people (including kids) playing them. If P3s are located in family entertainment centres, it will make playing pinball accessible to a section of the public that is presently not exposed to pinball.

Everyone knows that the majority of today's arcade operators operate redemption machines instead of pinball because redemption machines make ten times the money, making pinball attractive to operators again is an important first step in widening the audience for pinball. If the P3 can hold it's own in a redemption-focused arcade like Dave & Busters, it will make the system more attractive to other operators.

Quoted from majicman110:

Dave & Busters are obviously going to try the P3 out in Austin, if they decide to roll this out in their locations nationwide...well, that would be absolutely huge for a small company like Multimorphic.

It seems that the significance of this is lost on some people.

If pinball has to soley comprise of “The Pinball Community” then it isn’t going to be around in 10 years. This is about exposing new people to pinball and getting them into the hobby.

Why do they have to put one in their homes? If they sell P3's to all the D&B's, that is success for multimorphic in it's own.

I think that Cannon Lagoon would also work in a redemption arcade setting, they already have the software configured to award tickets I believe. Heads Up and Cannon Lagoon use the same playfield module, so Dave and Busters would simply be able to select CL in the menu if they wanted to change it up.

In that case I would think that the benefits of the swappable playfield concept would kind of be lost. Which is the essence of my initial opinion that this just doesn't seem to be the best fit.

An industry does not need to constantly grow in order to be solvent. There are countless businesses that have driven themselves to bankruptcy by dumping resources into expansion to the point of diminishing returns.
Sometimes it is best to carve out a niche and master it, take your profit, give your employees stability and rake in the $$$
Stern doesn't need to increase sales 10% a year to stay solvent. Evidence would be that they are still around.

I'm not sure why swappable playfield concept wouldn't be a hit in a D&B. The younger kids nowadays get bored of the same thing pretty quickly. You can leave Heads Up running for a few weeks and then just switch across to Cannon Lagoon in order to keep things fresh. Same if they were to purchase extra playfields with new games - the swap is really simple and storage of the playfields is minimal so why not benefit from the ability to swap them over.

From a maintenance perspective it's less of an issue than standard pins as well - if something's wrong on one of the playfields its a simple swap. Same with the whole flipper/sling assembly - it's literally sliding out the mechanism and disconnecting one molex connector. Even a non-operator can swap those over in a minute or so.

No need. #Heads Up, Cannon Lagoon, and Grand Slam Rally all share the same module. The operator only needs to change the game in the menu … assuming they buy the license.

Congratulations Gerry !

I hope D&B add more of your games to their locations.

Yeah sorry - didn't explain that well - they could also pick up a couple of Cosmic Carts for another fun network connected game. And don't forget Rocs - I think the whole P3 concept lends itself to places like D&B really well.

Always nice to see pins put in mainstream establishments, congrats. Exposing more people to the hobby we love is a great thing.

This makes me cringe... mostly because now I'm wondering if such a thing could even be submitted for IFPA, lol. I know you didn't mean league in that specific manner, but it did raise that thought. Lexi's been used, as anyone who's ever been to Bat City Open knows, but say......Cannon Lagoon? Could you theoretically have a tourney on these head to head games that's ranked? Cosmic Cart Racing is the closest to 'standard' pinball play...but CL and this Heads Up game aren't at all in the same vein.

#88 4 years ago
Quoted from Frax:

Cannon Lagoon has scoring. Using it in a tournament would be no different than any other pin.
Even Heads Up could be used, it also has scoring. One player games or head-to-head in a ladder or strikes type event.

Exposure, no matter how small at first, is a step in the right direction.

I don't remember a P3 thread ever getting this type of traffic before. That is what a big deal this is. Exposure and people talking about it (and hopefully playing it).

D&B is a huge platform. I know Gary Stern would take their calls 24/7, but they're not calling him.

#91 4 years ago

Just wanted offer another hearty congratulations on cracking this barrier, Gerry and Crew! The games look great! Wish they were in a location nearer to me. To that end, I'm gonna go write a couple Dave and Buster's emails to local franchises.

#92 4 years ago

Another thing to remember - if this becomes a hit at D&Bs and they decide to buy a bunch, that’s more money available for traditional games on the platform.

I'm curious...did they buy these for their Austin location, or are they on loan from Multimorphic?

In this scenario most times they are on loan or lease of some type. They do a lot of testing and they gain analysis for replay mag or other sources operators use for quarterly reports.

lets be honest. ~100 posts on pinside from people that already know about P3 isn't that big of a deal.

however it is super cool that they are getting a foothold in such a popular place. would be nice to see it go nationwide. its probably the only chance i'll get to check out the P3 system.

i do think that stern could get their games into a chicago D&B if they really wanted or cared enough to pursue it. but i think they are too busy actually making/selling hundreds of games at a time for it to really matter that much unless its on a national scale (which would be amazing too).

#96 4 years ago

Would be great to get some reviews of this from Pinsiders. Anyone in Austin been to play it yet?

#97 4 years ago

I've been there. It's just like any other Dave & Buster's. The P3 is set up with Heads Up on both machines. You can play solo or linked. It's a timed, two round game. It's not set up for redemption (I don't think any of their games are but I didn't look too hard).

Other than the P3 I thought the huge Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots was the coolest thing there. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=giant+rock+em+sock+em+robots&t=ffab&ia=videos

#98 4 years ago

Redemption is more of a ChunkyCheese thing... rather than an adult establishment like D&B is geared towards; so it kinda makes since that redemption isn't really a thing there.

#99 4 years ago

Redemption is huge at D&B. Games that are green swipes give tickets. Blue swipes do not.

#100 4 years ago

I take my kids there a couple of times a year. I'd say half the place is redemption (the busiest half) and the other half Raw Thrills style arcade games.

There's a big redemption "store", that you walk in, not just a counter like Chuck E Cheese, filled with merch to trade your e-tickets for.
