Tonight we added switches for each shot as well as ramp gate/switches. Going old school and for now can seemingly go 100% switches with no optos.
Firmed up any white space with posts and rubbers and ball guides. Really all that’s left (assuming we don’t do any major layout changes) is a diverter in the inner orbit to drop the ball into the pops. Our under playfield is starting to feel like the real deal!
With no gaps in the playfield, we did some tests throwing the ball harder and on a 6.0 pitch. Got some wicked airballs! The ramp curves are tight (hoping not too tight) and we will need to make custom airball protectors (thinking like Metallica style…see pic). Also lots of airballs off of the targets…hoping they calm down on a steeper pitch (any suggestions welcome to reduce airballs!).

Foam core works great for temp protectors. I bought a scroll saw to cut Lexan once my designs are final… it’s still in the box!

Dude great idea on the foam for mock-ups! I have a ton that’s what I used for ramp returns. Will look into the scroll saw! Yeah currently I am snipping thin PETG with shears…not ideal and also difficult to drill into for mounting holes

Back from vacation in California where we were lucky to find a GF LE and FF Pro on location! Meanwhile, drew up a very rough “sloppy copy” of the playfield to bring into Adobe Illustrator for tweaking.

took us about 5-6 hrs to make our sloppy copy to scale. basically top 2/3 of playfield perfectly to scale. Now Lucas, my older son, will transfer all of this to Adobe Illustrator into a scaled file which includes all lower 1/3 with cuts already in. this file then goes to our artist for layout and Ernie/Trident for CNC cut whitewood number 2! Ernie thanks for the jigs!

Probably time to reveal our artist! We are thrilled to be working with Brian Allen and Flyland Designs on our machine! Part of our urgency to get the AI file of playfield is so he has what he needs to start. He has been great so far, we have a Dropbox shared file and me and the boys upload our files there as well as folders for each Overwatch character. Brian is even going to play the Overwatch on Xbox a bit in order to get to understand the story and characters to help with the creative process. Soooo stoked!!!

Significant art update. After deeper discussions with our artist it seems that the size, scope, complexity of the project would make it cost prohibitive to move forward. Therefore, we mutually agreed to part ways on this particular project. The boys and I are going to have a crack at doing the art ourselves (we know photoshop and illustrator reasonably well but are not artists) and outsource bits to aspiring artists (local and/or Fiverr).

I realize this is only a temp setup, and it's awesome you let the boys do a lot of the work. Just found this thread, and I think it looks amazing. Great ideas, and layouts. You are really killing it so far.

I'll be following along, still chasing bugs in mine, but also moving forward.

Lucas made an incredible amount of progress on converting our hand drawn/measured playfield into Adobe Illustrator with measurements to scale. In 20 mins he got about 1/3 of the playfield populated. Amazing how well he learned this program in high school graphic design class. Very impressed! A visitor stopped by as well! Her name is Mei, named after the Overwatch character!

Started our power box and wiring. Documenting it all here for other noobies. Basically, following the FAST pinball wiring guide and standards. Got a wire crimper and an awesome cutting tool that also removes sheath. This weekend we will get it all into a box for protection.

I see that you are in the planning process for how to make your machine functional and that you are following the fast pinball guides and that is very good. Just in case you are interested, I want to show you another way where you can have the possibility of creating rules and game modes never seen in pinball if you wish, just as I was able to achieve and even minimal cost in boars to control your coils and switches. . Are you running coils on 36V? Or do you have over 110V in some parts in US?

Our coils here are typically 48 volts dependent on the set up. Only thing in an American machine with 110 is the transformer or power supply input.

did our first crimping of molex connectors into headers. Ran into a problem where the header wasn’t able to be fully depressed onto the board. Thanks to some folks on Discord, recognized that my connectors were inserted backwards into the header! All fixed now but such a noobie mistake!
I am surprised how finicky and difficult crimping molex connectors onto 18 gauge wire is. Anyways, feels good getting closer to wiring our flippers and slings!

OMG we have power to the Neuron! I can’t believe it! Was a nerve wracking process as we do not have much electrical experience.
I think we need to redo molex headers from 48V supply to Power Distribution board though as for some reason those aren’t lit (fuses look ok). EDIT: the 48V power supply does not want to give more than 20V so troubleshooting that now.
We built this temporary setup in a plastic electrical box from home depot and I used a Dremel to cut out spaces for EIC socket, rocker switch and AC line fuse. Lid is only for safety but will be left ajar for ventilation when flipping on the whitewood (we won’t be flipping much until cabinet comes in a couple of weeks).
Some troubleshooting to do but happy with the progress!

Thanks! its actually a large box with a reasonable amount of circulation space. for the light playing we will do on our whitewood (on the rotisserie), i probably will keep lid on for safety (or put it on sideways to allow ventilation). One you get a cabinet, dump the box completely, and put it directly cabinet or back box. The more air, and space, the longer it will last. If you're concerned about voltage, the surround it in corragated material, or close to the bottom rear of cabinet.
Make your fuses visually, and meter accessible, and you'll be fine.
As an electrician of 37 years I've been shocked more than most humans lol

Made this 4 ft molex cable to bring power from backbox to the playfield (and allow room for it to fold down). Getting way more efficient with crimping! Can’t wait to see actual power and green lights on our playfield! Coming soon…

There is a reason almost all of us go with the RS series from meanwell, at least for the 48v supply.

With the help of Pinball Life’s Big Bag of Everything (BBOE), was able to make custom mounts for the FAST boards! Got the Playfield Interchange board, and two I/O boards mounted!

Look around for a forstner bit jig to set the depth with a set screw... that way when you go to flush the t-nuts it is the correct (and same) depth throughout.

Also, when drilling or hogging material, put some painters tape down and it can help prevent splintering (I know, underside of playfield, but it is what I did and turned out well with no tear outs)

Of course if you have a router that can accommodate the shank, you can just use the plunge base and set the depth that way.

I originally had all Meanwell in kits, then had no stock, so I had went Drok (which haven't had any issues on the one in League but I may swap back to a RSP. My original RSP failed).

Same here, I think just dropping the first playfield cost me around $700 in paint, inserts, etc to replace. That one hurt bad money wise, and time wise.
Think that put me up around 4k total now counting that oops. Saved a lot in doing my own cab, backbox, legs, etc. Found a good friend that helped money wise on my graphics, so that helped knock artist cost way down too.

Just enjoy, and the money is what it is. Can't replace the fun, and family time anyway, it's more than worth the cost.

Doing some Sunday morning bookkeeping. Cam uploaded character reference images, game rules, and some theme direction to our shared Dropbox with our artist, Brian Allen (he starts work in 3 weeks).
Started a list of all driver, coil and switch numbers.
Also started wiring the lower third!

Lucas finished up the Adobe Illustrator CNC cut file for Whitewood #2! Sending it off to
Octomodz Trident Pinball who will be checking the file (thank you Ernie!) and sending out for CNC cut on beautiful Baltic Birch! Highly recommend using Ernie and Trident Pinball for your homebrew work! We could not have gotten this far (or even started) without him
