Im doing an overlay for someone (not my first choice, but its what he wants) and have a question from people who have done them. What do you do around the shooter lane groove? I did one years ago on a high speed and was able to just cut that part out and hide the cut in an unnoticable spot, but this is on a silverball mania and i dont see a good place to hide it. Is it possible to get the overlay to stretch to form to it, or does it have to be cut?

If it were me, I would cut this all out.

Looks like the standard is halfway up the shooter lane, past any switches and past the groove.

Thanks, grizly, i dont really want to take all that off due to the whole playfield being sanded, so all of that area would be bare wood. Evan, im not sure what im looking at in those pics. Are they both overlays?

Agree. I always cut off all the fake wood.

Make sure the white also has enough opacity. Otherwise you’ll need to paint down white before applying the overlay.

Also, it’s a good idea to take pics before it goes down so you can find all the holes later.

Same with me. Cut out the fake wood where you can & follow the art outline. I sand, seal, & apply the overlay wet for best alignment.

    Bare wood is good.

Now cover it with some oil based poly so the grain is accented and the poly will naturally yellow, so it all looks proper.

SHoot, sorry, I was thinking playfield protectors not overlays. Never mind me, and carry on.
