So, i've been pretty much out of room for a while. Mostly concentrating on acquiring, fixing and restoring pinball and arcade games but not really being able to play them. Aside from the 12-15 games in the garage that is. My "shop" is packed with finished games, parts, projects, tools, machinery, supplies etc. with just enough room to work on stuff.

But now i want to PLAY the games, so i went ahead and started putting up a steel building for the overflow. It's almost done but i have a few things to wrap up still.

    #3 6 years ago

Step 1. Hire Dig Dug to carve up a spot in the yard.

    IMG_7491 (resized).jpgIMG_7491 (resized).jpg

    Yep, give me a minute

    Quoted from Hawk007:

sweet. Looking forward to seeing a picture of it all set up. Did you pour a pad firsts?
    Cheers

    #5 6 years ago

    Step 2. The pad.

    IMG_8045 (resized).jpgIMG_8045 (resized).jpg

    #6 6 years ago

    Step 3

Cut back the massive Eucalyptus branches

    #7 6 years ago

    Step 4

Erect the structure. Went with a 1500 sq ft steel building. Only took 2 days to install.

It was the day after a rain storm so it was a messy operation. I didn't want to wait another 5 weeks though.
Took forever to clean out all the mud later.

    Clean!

    IMG_9939 (resized).jpgIMG_9939 (resized).jpg

    #9 6 years ago

    Step 5

Seal it up. Sealed every crack and crevice to keep out the critters.

    Step 6

Insulation! It gets super hot here in the summer and surprisingly cold in the winter (for So Cal)

    Tools and supplies

    IMG_0053 (resized).jpgIMG_0053 (resized).jpg

    #11 6 years ago

LOTS and LOTS of insulation. 120 pieces @ 1.5" thick.

    Thats it for now.

    Still to do:

Finish insulation, seal up around roll top door, install solar attic fan, wire up electrical and lights, install alarm.

    #21 6 years ago

1500 square feet. Not sure yet. Its going to house parts and supplies as well.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

What is foot print? How many games do you plan to set up?
Looks cool and thx for sharing

    #22 6 years ago

The shop looks like this now, so i'll move over enough so that the majority of these will be playable.

I've already got a bathroom built around the corner.

    Quoted from cottonm4:

Color me impressed !!. For sure, the only thing that separates the men from the boys is the price of their toys.
Are you going to plumb it for toilet facilities?

    #29 6 years ago

LOL, not falling into that trap. Maybe 10-12 titles have still eluded me but that's it, i'm not getting any more.

    Quoted from o-din:

    That's way cool!
Now you will be able to hoard at least twice as many machines.

    #32 6 years ago

My budget was $30K. I think i'm approaching that.

    Excavation was about $3K
    Concrete pad was about $4k
    Building was about $16,000 installed
    Insulation $2300
Tree trimming was $2000 but that had to be done anyway.

I looked into getting an actual building but that was over $100,000.00

    Quoted from joefox22:

whats is going to cost you when all i said and done?

    #33 6 years ago

I've been collecting and restoring since about 2010. I started a couple tech businesses. I also invested some time and $ into a couple of friends companies that did well. My background is in graphic arts.

Here's the secret... do some work for a company that looks like its going somewhere. But don't ask for money, do it for a small piece of the action instead. Yes, its risky, but...

    Quoted from Richthofen:

Man what do you do for work that you have so many games??!

    #37 6 years ago

The R-TECH insulation logo reminds me of one of my favorite games.

Mostly, but we'll see how it goes.

    Quoted from spinal:

You must have laid out how it all fits by now right?

    #66 6 years ago

    That's the plan

    Quoted from SunKing:

This, and a pool renovation too! You are getting set up for some serious parties.

    #67 6 years ago

True, but this is it for me...

    Quoted from brenna98:

This reminds me of Parkinson's law: The adage that "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion".
The same thing can be applied to a game collection. Whatever space you have will inevitably get filled and more expansion will be needed.
Unless you put a cap on the size...

    #68 6 years ago
    Quoted from PoBoyPinball:

I have a garage built like your building what did you use to hold the insulation sheets up from falling down/off of the walls and ceiling?

    Liquid nails and wire.

I have always thought about insulation for my garage.

    Quoted from hockeymag8:

Thanks a lot fkr!! I am single with a 2000 sq foot ranch that I figure i can fit 8 pins in....so should be ok. Then you go ahead and post this!!!! Got my mind thinking this way now!! Lol
Amazing job!! Thanks a lot for sharing the pics!

    #71 6 years ago

    Yep, way faster too.

    Quoted from xsvtoys:

It is of course awesome, and thanks for posting the budget. I did some looking at these steel buildings and I was wondering how they would compare cost-wise to a typical wood structure. So, $100k for a typical stick-built barn thingie of the same size? Sheesh that is 3X the cost, I didn't realize it would be so much. This looks like a good way to go.

    #72 6 years ago

    Hahahahhahaaha.

    #73 6 years ago
    Quoted from pinlink:

Can you talk a bit about the electrical? And will that also stay within the 30k budget? Thanks
Edit: also any plans for HVAC system?

No plans for HVAC at the moment but that could change.

    Quoted from MinusWorlds:

Out of curiosity, what’s the R value of that foam board? I just had about the same sq footage as you spray foamed. Of course, I’m in NH and we have a much different thermal requirement.

Not sure why the R value is. Got this stuff at Lowe's.

    Quoted from Potatoloco:

Nice! I'm to the point of putting up a steel building right next to my house. HOA be damned.

    I like your attitude.

    Quoted from Kkuoppamaki:

That's awesome, very nice indeed. How are you going to keep temperature and humidity constant, will the fan do the trick?

Insulation and the fan should be enough.

    #74 6 years ago

Solar fan with thermostat control and fire safety switch has arrived and is ready to go in.

Oh there's room for the EDOT, there's always room for the EDOT.

    Quoted from dothedoo:

Man if I only had the space.....I'd throw $30K into a building like that for sure!
Oh, and even with all that space I don't think there's room for that Discs of Tron.

I thought so too but everywhere i look there are huge housing developments going up. The traffic is getting insane.

    Quoted from Magic_Mike:

People are leaving California in droves and this guy is still building.

    #94 6 years ago

Nope, i'm getting killed by taxes. I won't get political here but man, it's very, very bad. The only things keeping me here are the weather, the beach and some family thats still here.

    Quoted from MrBally:

But if he's been there for a long time, his taxes are very reasonable. Thank you Prop 13.
My sister lives on a side of a foothill in suburban Santee. Her taxes are like $1100.00. If she sold and bought the identical house across the street for the same money she sold her house for, her taxes would be $8000.00 or more.

    #95 6 years ago

    Looking forward to seeing this.

    Quoted from TRAMD:

I am planning on building a 1500 sqft indoor basketball court plus another 3 car garage. Unfortunately my development has covenants and it has to be all brick to match my house. It will probably cost me north of $200k. This building looks awesome and I am envious of it. Perhaps I should just rent a trailer and take out all of the indoor walls...

    #97 6 years ago

Those are cool. $187,000 base for a 1500 sq ft place though. Ouch. The airplane hanger idea would be awesome though.

    Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

To OP...looking very good. People seem surprised...but really nothing new.
    http://www.wdmb.com/texas_barndominiums.aspx
I once went and looked at some Rush the Rock driving arcades. The guy and his wife were living in an airplane hanger with an RV parked inside that he used for his sleeping quarters/trip taking. He had a steel “upper deck” platform (call it a second floor) that had living room type space, dining table, etc. and overlooked the main floor below. The main floor was his toys (plane, couple old cars, Pinballs/arcades, workout area, and workbench).
So...the next time you see a steel building just sitting off in a field somewhere, there could be one badass living pad inside.

    #103 6 years ago

Thanks man, it will definitely be nice to be able to play these things

    Quoted from SilverUnicorn:

This is just awesome! I love following threads like this. Looks like this will be a great space, and as long as I have followed your work (including KLOV) it never seemed like you had a proper space to set up and play your masterpieces.
It looks like that is changing, and I am happy that you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor!

I know right? All kinds of nasty surprises lurking underground.

    Quoted from o-din:

Hey, I did that last week.
Was starting to get a little concerned about those three 60 year old wires dangling between the house and garage.
The recent rains sure helped with that project.

Someone re-did the side art on the Dig Dug but its total crap. Check out the graphic error (most likely poorly drawn with an auto-trace program). Will be replacing with decent side art eventually. The rest of the cabinet, glass, cpo, marquee etc are beautiful.

Thanks, you should come down in a couple weeks when I get them all up and running.

    #185 6 years ago

    Sorta.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

Ok , you don't have a collection, you have a museum!!!!

    #186 6 years ago

It’s there, part of the alarm system.

    Quoted from PinPatch:

WOW! Please for the love of God, wire in smoke detectors into your alarm system!

    #187 6 years ago

Lol. I know. They are in the garage/shop. I’m still sorting things out.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

    not enough pinball

    #188 6 years ago

Agreed! Dig Dug rocks. Burgertime will too once I find a decent donor machine.

    Quoted from Grayman_EM:

Love playing Dig Dug. Die you dragon, Die you rotten tomato!
Added: Love Burgertime too, even if it reminds me of my old job.

    #190 6 years ago

Yep. I like the obscure stuff, I don’t think they get enough love.

    Quoted from wxforecaster:

Holy sweet mother. You've even got some of my faves that I haven't seen cabs of in decades...lke Roc N Rope and Bump n Jump.

    #191 6 years ago

    That’s what it’s all about

    Quoted from jawjaw:

No kidding. That's one serious collection.
Bringing back memories looking at all those games.

    #192 6 years ago

I’ve kicked it around. For now it’s going to be private parties. In the past I’ve opened up my stash to cub scouts and church youth groups. It was unnerving watching those kids jump on newly restored games but soon I came to grips with the fact that these games won’t stay perfect for long. They should just be enjoyed and not stuck behind red ropes.

Luckily I don’t need to turn this into a business but you never know, I may have to open a public arcade down the road.

    Quoted from Langless28:

Wow. Would you ever consider opening to the public? Maybe like Saturday mornings or something?

    #193 6 years ago

They took up about 2/3 of the building. I could fit a lot more games if I didn’t leave access aisles between them but I want to be able to comfortably get to them. I’m so glad I’m done wasting any more $ on storage units.

    Quoted from xsvtoys:

I’m amazed at how the new building swallowed all of that up with no problem, there seems to be plenty of space. It must feel good to unleash all of that from those storage units and get rid of them.

    #194 6 years ago

Thanks! It’s been a journey for sure. I was worried that I was just going to end as one of those crazy guys on Hoarders.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

just gotta say I love this thread!
A dream for manyof us that are working towards an eventual dedicated space with a collection built and restored over years/decades.
Congrats on getting to this stage. There are many that never do...

    #195 6 years ago

Storage fees kept climbing. At first it was $525 for both buildings. Last month it was $850!

Sorry no Kaos in the collection. I see them pop up pretty regularly though.

    Quoted from PoBoyPinball:

As I was looking at those pics of the storage units and the truck filling up you had me wondering is that building going to be big enough? Glad to see it looks like it is. I'm guessing in storage cost this building will pay for itself over time and is something you should have done along time ago.
So cool to see titles I had forgotten about. One I didn't see but wondering / thinking you may have it is Kaos? I remember playing the crap out of that game at a 7-11 one summer while staying at a cousin's house.
    Killer collection

    #196 6 years ago

Time and money my friend. It’s good enough for now

    Quoted from mcluvin:

Weren't we gonna discuss flooring options and covering up that insulation before bringing the games in?

    #197 6 years ago

Lol, the garage/shop is already building 2
I’m sorting it out next week so that the games in there will be playable and not all crammed together. I think I need to sell about a dozen games though. Still too crowded. We’ll see.

    Quoted from flynnibus:

Time for building two! Your garage had as much as the storage in it in it or more! Once you consolidate you’ll need more

    #198 6 years ago

    Working on it...

Don’t have an SAR and don’t think I’ve ever played one. I do have a few rotary games though. Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, etc

    Quoted from Luckydogg420:

    Wow.
What’s the plan for hydro? That’s a lot of games. Are you getting 600A service?
There’s a lot of fun games in your collection that I’ve played on MAME, but I’ve never seen real machines for.
Do you have S.A.R search and rescue? That a fun game that I’d love to play again.

    #199 6 years ago

We’ll see how it goes. I’ve got other projects that need attention.

    Quoted from homebrood:

Yeah the busy look of all that R-Tech on the walls would drive me nuts. I would have to paint or cover it somehowm, concrete floor I could deal with as long as it's sealed... but still very jealous!

    #200 6 years ago

    Thanks Robert!

I’m really digging the black and white games lately. Simple but very fun

    Quoted from RobertWinter:

That's an amazing collection. Even more so that you're fully restoring most of them.
Star Castle and Circus were a couple of my favorites back in the day. Had a Pacmania for a few years. Don't see those very often.

    #202 6 years ago

Thanks! You should go for it! You'll definitely need a lot of insulation though, its get cold up there

    Quoted from jar155:

Awesome stuff. About 5 years ago I was *this* close to pulling the trigger on a steel building the exact same size. I ended up not doing it out of worry that I wouldn't play my games as often with them outside the house, but seeing what you have now, I might start exploring the option again. I had two storage sheds full too, but unfortunately I sold the vast majority of my arcade collection (kept almost all the pinball machines), and getting them back would be a lot of work.
Excellent collection, man! That's something to be proud of.

    #203 6 years ago

It works great but the playfield isn't awesome. Hoping to get a new playfield soon from John.

    Quoted from dasvis:

That Classic Stern Seawitch on the left needs to be unleashed!

    #212 6 years ago

Good idea. I’ll get a couple shots.

    Quoted from fantarama:

    that's impressive.
take some aerial pictures, like put a ladder near the door, climb it and snap a panoramic shot. I want to see that place in its full glory!

    #213 6 years ago

    Thanks! They mostly are.

    Quoted from xsvtoys:

ESPECIALLY if those restorations are all on the level of that sweet, sweet Death Race. What a great job that was, I really enjoyed that thread and that machine....it’s awesome.

    Quoted from robotron:

when pacman left klov it was never the same place. why the hell did they push you to leave!!??
Its complicated I don't always play well with others. That place has some really great folks but it also has some major d-bags. I never really fit in with the dinosaurs there. They have a good ol' boy mentality and have majorly biased opinions. The mods there are all dick heads too. Especially Tom "Tombo".

do you actually ever play the games?
Yep, but usually only when friends come over.

hey d what is your top 5 games?

    That's a tough one.

    Single Player:
    Discs of Tron
    Spy Hunter
    Time Pilot
    Cheyenne
    Rush N Attack

    Multi Player:
    Warlords
    Joust
    Super Sprint
    Ripoff
    Cruisn World

    what is your favorite pin?
    TRON LE

your collection is amazing, i was up there almost 100 games at one time and really was overwhelmed. restoring a single game takes alot of work and time. dont know how you do it.

    Being semi-retired helps.

    thanks for sharing.

    You're welcome

    #219 6 years ago

Wow, thanks! Maybe the best compliment i've ever received. So glad you like the work. Hopefully some day you can make it to So. California to get the grand tour

    Quoted from sixtyfourbits:

I’ve been lurking on this site for a while now, soaking up pinball knowledge, but your thread was awe inspiring enough that I actually signed up just to comment here. Your work, both on the building and machines, is top notch. Truly inspiring man.

If you’re ever passing through Manitoba, shoot me a message, you’re more than welcome to stop by and play sar search and rescue. You’re the first person I’ve seen mention that they are specifically looking to play that game.

    Quoted from Latinfantom:

Oh Pacman....words cannot express. You never cease to amaze. Please, (PLEASE!!!) include me in your list of guests to your first get together. Not only do I want to marvel at and enjoy your gorgeous, massive collection - but I want to shake the hand of the man that sold me my grail games. My Outrun Deluxe and Space Harrier Deluxe machines are the pride and joy of my entire collection. You are a true artist sir! It would be worth the plane ticket.

Got a smokin deal on some huge industrial shelves from a buddy in town.
Tall enough to actually slide full upright games enderneath. Got a few set up, setting up a couple more later.

    #234 6 years ago

Here's the 3 big shelves on the right 3' deep, 10' tall, 8' long.

And a couple smaller shelves on the left that are holding monitors are 2' deep, 6' tall, 8' long.

Parts, parts, parts and Halloween props.

    Quoted from rollinover:

what are you going to use the shelves for? parts? neons? signs? etc???

    #249 6 years ago

    Exactly.

    Quoted from BudManPinFan:

The way I look at it he’s making room under his storage shelves to fit as many pins and games in there as possible...now that’s dedication!

    #250 6 years ago

It’s kind of a parking garage for projects that need a bit of work but it’s also roomy enough under there to play the games comfortably. I’ll have vids under there as well.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

nah, I kind of like it.
Efficient use of space and it tucks the games in a bit. I likely would put down plywood or something on the shelfs to block the top from dust and also to keep the light and sound in over the pins. Make it feel more cozy.
I also would probably put the vids under the shelving as they will need less hands on work than pins and easier to get into them.

    #251 6 years ago

Yeah, there’s always that concern around here. Not sure if there’s really any way to totally protect the games but the shelves are pretty heavy duty and are secured to the walls. I do have earthquake insurance as well. If the “big one” hits, the games won’t be the first thing on my mind.

    Quoted from Grayman_EM:

I agree California earthquake shakes shelves apart total collection destroyed! Unless, insurance covers collection pacman now newest California millionaire!

    #252 6 years ago

    A. There are more pins.
    B. Pins take up twice as much space as upright vids.
    C. Some vids will go under too.
    D. Yes, clearly I’ve lost my marbles.

    Quoted from Zitt:

Anyone else disgusted that the put the shelves over the only pinball machines?
I love this guy's dedication to the hobby... but I'm starting to question his sanity.

    #257 6 years ago

Yep, that’s what this is. Once I get enough power it will be all 3.

    Quoted from PoBoyPinball:

So this seems to be more of storage unit/work shop/possible game room.

    #258 6 years ago

Thanks for the advice. Pretty much what I was planning

    Quoted from merccat:

Get some steel cable (maybe even that nice stuff thats wrapped in clear rubber)... trim and attach carabiners then string across the beams 6” to a foot above the shelf deck top. I’m assuming the beams have holes so you could set at whatever level works for the items on the shelf. That should at least help hold in large items in a quake.
I’d be more afraid of something falling on someone... games can be fixed, people not always.

    #259 6 years ago

Back in the garage, got some sorting to do.

Hmm. true i suppose. I'll think about it when i bring the parts over.

    Quoted from Zitt:

...but... why not put the arcades under the shelves. They don't have this long glass surface under the shelves.
Also; With arcades under there; you'd actually be able to to the shelves from in front of the machines.
    Think man! ;P
