So, i've been pretty much out of room for a while. Mostly concentrating on acquiring, fixing and restoring pinball and arcade games but not really being able to play them. Aside from the 12-15 games in the garage that is. My "shop" is packed with finished games, parts, projects, tools, machinery, supplies etc. with just enough room to work on stuff.

But now i want to PLAY the games, so i went ahead and started putting up a steel building for the overflow. It's almost done but i have a few things to wrap up still.

sweet. Looking forward to seeing a picture of it all set up. Did you pour a pad firsts?
    Cheers

Step 1. Hire Dig Dug to carve up a spot in the yard.

    Step 2. The pad.

    Step 3

Cut back the massive Eucalyptus branches

    #7 6 years ago

    Step 4

Erect the structure. Went with a 1500 sq ft steel building. Only took 2 days to install.

It was the day after a rain storm so it was a messy operation. I didn't want to wait another 5 weeks though.
Took forever to clean out all the mud later.

    Clean!

    IMG_9939 (resized).jpgIMG_9939 (resized).jpg

    #9 6 years ago

    Step 5

Seal it up. Sealed every crack and crevice to keep out the critters.

    Step 6

Insulation! It gets super hot here in the summer and surprisingly cold in the winter (for So Cal)

    Tools and supplies

LOTS and LOTS of insulation. 120 pieces @ 1.5" thick.

    Thats it for now.

    Still to do:

Finish insulation, seal up around roll top door, install solar attic fan, wire up electrical and lights, install alarm.

The shop looks like this now, so i'll move over enough so that the majority of these will be playable.

Color me impressed !!. For sure, the only thing that separates the men from the boys is the price of their toys.

Are you going to plumb it for toilet facilities?

    #26 6 years ago

    That's way cool!

Now you will be able to hoard at least twice as many machines.

    #27 6 years ago

whats is going to cost you when all i said and done?

    #28 6 years ago

I've already got a bathroom built around the corner.

LOL, not falling into that trap. Maybe 10-12 titles have still eluded me but that's it, i'm not getting any more.

Man what do you do for work that you have so many games??!

    #32 6 years ago

My budget was $30K. I think i'm approaching that.

    Excavation was about $3K
    Concrete pad was about $4k
    Building was about $16,000 installed
    Insulation $2300
Tree trimming was $2000 but that had to be done anyway.

I looked into getting an actual building but that was over $100,000.00

I've been collecting and restoring since about 2010. I started a couple tech businesses. I also invested some time and $ into a couple of friends companies that did well. My background is in graphic arts.

Here's the secret... do some work for a company that looks like its going somewhere. But don't ask for money, do it for a small piece of the action instead. Yes, its risky, but...

Looks like it paid off. Have to take risk to make money.

Um... yeah... that’s badass! 1500 square feet isn’t far off from the square footage of my entire house.

    Very cool!

Hi Pac Man, when you build your next shed, to save on insulating, finishing the inside etc, look at this product -

The R-TECH insulation logo reminds me of one of my favorite games.

This is awesome. I was thinking about doing this and figured it would cost me about $20k. Mine will be a little smaller than yours.

    #39 6 years ago

Looks awesome. I'm just super jealous of the yard. Where I live we basically have 10 feet between houses and about 15 feet in the back yard I rent an enclosed storage unit as my shop to work on cars and other odds and ends but it's not climate controlled so no pinball there.

Wow, this shows that what really separates the men from the boys in this hobby is space! (and I'm out) Congratulations, looks great

You must have laid out how it all fits by now right?

    #42 6 years ago

Thanks for sharing.....I dream of this!

    #43 6 years ago

This, and a pool renovation too! You are getting set up for some serious parties.

    #44 6 years ago

This reminds me of Parkinson's law: The adage that "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion".
The same thing can be applied to a game collection. Whatever space you have will inevitably get filled and more expansion will be needed.
Unless you put a cap on the size...

    #45 6 years ago

Very cool ... that is the nice part living on the coutryside in the USA .... here in the city of Cologne (wider) area is no chance to get payable ground for such a great hall !!

    Great job !!

    #46 6 years ago

    AMAZING!!!

    #47 6 years ago

Following this. Been thinking about doing that same thing myself. Looks awesome and what a collection!

    #48 6 years ago

I have a garage built like your building what did you use to hold the insulation sheets up from falling down/off of the walls and ceiling?

I have always thought about insulation for my garage.

    #49 6 years ago

Thanks a lot fkr!! I am single with a 2000 sq foot ranch that I figure i can fit 8 pins in....so should be ok. Then you go ahead and post this!!!! Got my mind thinking this way now!! Lol

Amazing job!! Thanks a lot for sharing the pics!

It is of course awesome, and thanks for posting the budget. I did some looking at these steel buildings and I was wondering how they would compare cost-wise to a typical wood structure. So, $100k for a typical stick-built barn thingie of the same size? Sheesh that is 3X the cost, I didn't realize it would be so much. This looks like a good way to go.
