I would LOVE to own one of these one day. Owning an EM pinball has me really interested in EM, and I'm slowly falling in love with the EM gun games. Played some at the Arcade Expo in Banning, CA. Unfortunately most were not working, which made me sad, but there were a couple that were dialed in and felt really satisfying. How do you guys find these? What specific search terms do you guys use? I try 'em gun' every once in a while and nothing comes up. Love this thread!

Finally got around to installing a periscope sighting rod on my Midway Sea Raider (seems missing/broken on many machines) which I obtained from John Robertson of flippers.com (the only known source of supply of this part). The rod comes blank so the sighting notches (which are illuminated from the upper light source) need to be made. I found using the finest wheel on a Dremel was most effective. Overall this is a tedious task getting access by removal of the wide mirror and removing and installing the rod to the light source bracket.

Carnival Gun. Just a couple of screws to tighten and gun & cabinet clean and she should be good as new.

Now where did I put that screwdriver?

The red coat I use for moving padding. It's made out of a horse blanket. Super thick and super heavy. Great for protecting back glass. My wife calls me Ivan the Great (I would prefer St. Gabriel Possenti)

Nice find and great to see they will be brought back to life again! I collect the old EM arcade games also they are awesome! They are not easy to find as many was destroyed. Amazing build quality and many still work after 50 years with just a little TLC.

I recently picked up a Midway's Invaders From Outer Space that hasn't been turned on in 10 years, but was "working when we last turned it on". Pretty excited about getting this up and running, but it's my first EM.

As I dig into this, a lot of the components are working - score reels and timers run properly, aliens and ship move, gun shoots, but I'm encountering a strange issue where a wiper is going off of a trace and burning up when I move the gun left to right. The gun moves all the way left to right, and I have the wiper stopped in the center when the gun is in the center, as suggested. Any ideas as to what I should be looking at with this or why this may be happening?

(I've stopped doing this, other than to take the attached video)

EDIT: ZNET Drano - if you still have this game, does the length of this trace look similar to what you see on yours?

Hopefully, 2020 or 2021 in the theaters and/or on Netflix. I will definitely post in the future when details are available.

Thanks for asking! It's an exciting project whose time has come. The director and the cinematographer are very talented and, like all of us, they are passionate about the subject matter.

not sure if this was the right place to post this. here is my circa 1940s rotory merchandiser. there are a few of them in collections in australia.

they were made here and shipped through the seaside carnivals. I can remember seeing these as a kid.

anways, here she is now, have the spinning motor off, full of memorabila.

it is also the best bar you have ever drunk or done shots off. will post some photos of that later.

I'm trying to buy my first EM. Quick question for you guys, I'm going to go look at a Midway Deluxe Shooting Gallery. Anything specific I should look for? What kind of price range am I looking at for an unrestored machine?

Check all the mechanics. Pop off the front door and check the compressor and ball launch mechanism. Test it and check scoring. The tube going to the gun tends to fall apart over time, inspect it. Ensure the targets all move smoothly.

I've never seen these for sale before in the collector realm (searched here, RGP, etc.), so have no basis of what they go for.
That being said, working complete and with average cosmetics not falling apart I'd guess around $2k.
Restored ones go for $6-8k (per Torrance auctions). I heard there was one at the Chicago coinop show last year that sold for $6k before the show even opened.

I found zitt made a pcb sound board for this and other games! Just curious as I have zero idea how these work. Does this replace the 8track or was that just ambient music and this is the in game shooting music?
    http://pinball-mods.com/blogs/?p=492

Just the rifle "ricochet" sound / "gun shot". No 8 track.

    Quoted from northvibe:

building zitts replacement board that runs an MP3.

No my board is effectively modernized "pew-pew" sound board. It does not replicate the 8track or have anything to do with MP3.
It doesn't even make the gun sound like a gun.... it just replicates the older "pew-pew".

For those curious, I wound up picking up the machine yesterday. 7 hour round trip and 97 degress outside. The guy I bought it from was really nice. He buys, restores, and collects arcade games. He'd bought it at an auction many years ago. He put it in storage with the thought of restoring it but never got around to it. He's downsizing his project games, and he said he just wasn't interested in EM games. He didn't have the keys to the back, but did have them for the front. He said he never had a problem with it so he never needed to open the back. I drilled the locks on the back hoping for a clown, but no luck. I did however find the original instructions and an envelope containing NOS cards

    The good:
    It does work.
It's complete minus the coin box and clown.
Someone painted the entire outside white, but after looking at it last night the original paint is still under there.
The gun handles are there and in good condition.
    About 15-20 balls inside.
    Backglass is nice.

    The bad:
The star globes don't light up and the star platters don't turn.
    No clown or coin box.
It has trouble starting a game. The tens reel on the score repeatedly spins when you start the game. It eventually stops but not on 0. The lights behind the numbers for how many shots you fired sporadically light up during this sequence also. Once it settles down, it starts a game.
One of the star platters has a piece missing.
A couple of small chunks of cabinet are missing.
Scratches on the back under the clown face. Probably from a misaligned star drop.

If anyone has a coin box, platter, or clown. Shoot me a PM.

I'd say you made a good move picking up the machine..
Because I have quite a few, I'd probably trade a restored (front to tail)
1957 ball bowler for it if you may have interest in that. The bowler
    looks and plays like new..

I'd love a ball bowler, but I have absolutely no room for one. If I do decide to let it go (and find some room for a bowler), I might take you up on the offer. I saw some pictures and a video of the one you restored. It looks great. Can I ask how you did the background behind the spinning stars? Did you print it on something and then put it behind plexi?

Yes, my Graphic Designer put it on clear vinyl in reverse (so when turned around and applying to the glass it's
accurate), then white vinyl, then the gray blocker..
I know I had pics of the Deluxe, but I don't remember video. Maybe video of the Midway Rifle Gallery..
Are there problems with the background areas of your machine?

    #984 4 years ago

The clown Target is always missing because the rubber has rotted. Someone made reproduction version with 3D printer can't remember who it was now but if you search around, look for another thread on Deluxe shooting gallery.

Maybe it changed hands alot, but this looked just like yours down to the clown

There isn't a problem with the background. The area below the clown face is scratched up from what looks like the star drop on the wheel making contact. And the eye on the clown is torn. I'd like to replace it or at least flatten it out and maybe put some plexI in front to stop the damage from getting worse

Quick question, how would I go about testing the motor on the spinning plates? It looks like it's in good condition, but the plates aren't spinning. Do I just need to check to voltage across the coil and if the voltage is good then the motor is bad?

    #988 4 years ago
    Quoted from edward472:

Yes, the Clown makes it a sure thing. That's the one I restored. It's one machine that I probably
    should have hung onto..
On the Spinning Motors, checking for voltage (50V I believe) would be the way to go. My guess
would be you'll find no voltage. I'm thinking the motors are okay. I don't have a schematic, but
if you find that the motors are not getting voltage, it may be a set of contacts in the Game Over
    Relay..

Can anyone with an Invaders from Outer Space tell me if it the wiper overshoots the trace by that amount when you move the joystick all the way to the right on yours? I wiped everything down on that PCB and cleaned the connections thoroughly and I'm still experiencing the same issue above. I know that's definitely where the trace is supposed to end (the photo is pre-cleaning).

Finally managed to pick up one that I had been looking forward to for a while. She needs a bit of work (don't they all?) but should be a great game afterwards! Should look good lined right up next to the "Fun Land"!

And whenever I find most of the original docs still in the unit, it's a great feeling! Original 'blueprint' schematic as well!

Midway's Sportsman up and running with added sound board because 8 track tape missing.
Chicago Coin's Flying Tiger finished with added background soundtrack mixed with original sound boards.
Also added Head-Up-Display and machine gun vibration on the control stick for extra game play dimension.

Next job is to restore the Williams Stockade.

I recognize the wav trigger board.
What is the blue interface between the machine wires and the wav trigger?

    #999 4 years ago
    Quoted from PinballAir:

I recognize the wav trigger board.
What is the blue interface between the machine wires and the wav trigger?

The Sportsman sound trigger circuit fires the op-amp inside the 8 track player. There is a large uF cap connected across each of the 4 sound effects (duck, crow, cougar and background). The reason for the large cap is to prolong the sound coming out from the 8 track. eg duck, crow or cougar hit relay only last a short time but we want the sound to play longer. The side effect of the caps when interfacing to the wav card is the wav input draws very little current resulting in the sound trigger being active for a long time and misses further triggers. The blue cards are power supply (top blue card) from 15vdc to 5volts needed for the opto isolated relay card (bottom blue card). The green PCB is just to connect the .150" pitch edge connector. This makes it compatible with the 8 track unit. I needed to connect a 1k resistor across the input signals to discharge the caps on the amplifier unit and also a resistor in series due to the input trigger voltages from the amplifier board are 16vdc and 20vdc. The input voltage to a WAV card and the relay card are 5volts. This was my 1st attempt and a more simplistic interface would be to connect a 15-20v dc relay with a protection diode across the coil to the 4 trigger inputs to the 8 track and wire the other side of the relay to the WAV card. Thus eliminating the need for the opto relay and 5v dc converter. I used stuff I had at hand at the time. There might be a need to add a resistor across the relay coils to encourage the discharge of the large caps. I'm contemplating to layout a PCB that would be totally compatible with Midway's 8 track player. Any thumbs up for this idea? It would make retro fitting sound to machines that have not 8 track tape installed and are hard to find a lot easier.
