Why would you take the advice of Pinside?

    I’m baffled

    #52 4 years ago
    Quoted from Spencer:

Exactly my argument, why would I sit in my house and wait to get sick when I can go to the DR and relax. I work on cars, 15-20 a day, I touch everything personal on a vehicle that the owner does, my chances are 100x worse getting the virus at work than in the DR with 5 reported cases, all from people arriving. No time out here, if my work decides I cant come back, 2 weeks paid by them. Besides, that's just a stupid idea, they cant enforce it.

Spence, the reported cases in North America is understated...... massively!!! Look where Italy was 3 or 4 weeks ago. That's where North America is gonna be in two to three weeks. America is barely scratching the surface when it comes to testing their citizens for Corona.
I understand that you just "wanna get away from it all" but damn..... do you really want to be in a foreign/second world country when the shit is hitting the fan?

Hell, me and my family were supposed to head to Vegas on April 2nd for 10 days of sunshine and the NHRA Drag races at our vacation house. Barring some miracle turn around, were not going. Not because I'm scared but because it'll be a major downer if we do go. The NHRA drags will be canceled, the casino's will be empty and if some crazy shit happens and the Canada/US border gets closed, we'll have to drive 20 freakin hours to get home.

Way too much stress to go on a "vacation".

No doubt brother Mark. You have common sense

Any pin you buy you like regardless

To ask these Pinside dopes about the virus is comical

I’m currently in Jamaica and say stay home. They had zero cases here 3 days ago and now have 6!

So are you saying your booking the entire plane or do you personally know where Each person on that plane came from? For what it’s worth a few weeks ago there were 0 cases in the US also....

Doug, I understand all your points, and agree with you, but here is the reality I'm faced with.

Our government has said, don't travel but has done nothing to help out people who have already booked. ( like make it mandatory for refunds )

I called Westjest and they said no refund, period. We will gladly switch your flight to a later time. Ok, great! The later time is $5000 more. lol. I've been going twice a year to Punta Cana for 12+ years now, I know the prices like the back of my hand. When I'm only offered one option and that is to switch my flight at a grossly overpriced option to only benefit the airline company, screw that.

I will not piss 10K down the drain and not go altogether. I also will not pay $5000 to switch my flights because Westjet feels it needs to recoup lost funds.

Either they refund my money or I'll be on that plane. I have no events to attend, just sit on the beach and that cant be cancelled. Yes, I risk possibly getting sick but I risk that here as well.

If Westjet decides to pull there head out of there ass and issues refunds, I'll be first inline. Otherwise, if the plane is flying, I'll be on it.

Do you know all the people at Costco while your waiting in line for 2 hours just to get in? Didn't think so.

I would tend to agree, but most I've seen over there need to leave their clothes on...whew

Hey Levi ....... in light of the worsening situation we have canceled our trip. St Maarten is shutting its boarders down

    TRIP CANCELED

Imagine if you were there one to bring Coronavirus to that Paradise....

    One disaster averted.

    Quoted from hoby1:

Give what to..... There are zero cases in St Marteen. I have more of a chance of contracting it at my job dealing with our clients and customers. As for the money we can get it all in credit for our next trip ( we take 3 a year ) . Its what me and my wife live for, we travel. Think I will play it out and if we see if the situation gets worst or if issues on occur on the island then we will change.
But judging by the situation at this point it time I think we will keep our plans . We can always change our mind within a few days of leaving. They way we are looking at it ....... who's to say the situation won't be much worst in 6 months.

Oh, very nice. So you’ll have the place all to yourself? I wonder how many tests are available there? I wonder if the number will stay at zero?

I gotta be honest, if I'm the St. Marteen government and I have no cases, then why the hell do I want to let people in? Take the hit for a few weeks but pass unscathed and with a reputation in the future of handling events like this responsibly. Sign me up for that.

Does that mean I'm the only one searching Google for "Last minute COVID-19 travel deals"?

I'm still checking flight prices out of morbid curiosity.

$350 round trip nonstop to Amsterdam? AmsterDAMN!

$10k in Punta Cana? You must live like a king down there!

    #75 4 years ago

We were going to Aruba. Supposed to leave 6 am this morning and be there today.

Yesterday they announced first 2 cases there and travel restrictions.

We were 100% going up until about 18 hours before the flight. Then the getting back into the country became an issue for us.

So we took our credit from the place and are going to go later in 2020.

Yeah, my counsel down there emailed me this morning saying the government was deciding on business operations, as well as shutting the borders.
I'm slow rolling the close on my bar due to it. Still under contract, but serious " island time" now ( pumping brakes a bit).
In the middle of a day in the hospital here, and can say I'm glad to be close to home currently...

    Its vacation, shouldn't everyone?

    #78 4 years ago

There is not a chance in hell that I would go.

    #79 4 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

I think, personally, you'd be insane to go on vacation right now. Especially leaving the country. But do what you think is right. It seems like you had your mind made up before you started this thread so not sure why you asked us.
I mean, I guess you were hoping for a little positive reinforcement from guys like Robotron who have zero skin in the game, well you got it. Why not ask your doctor, or contact local health officials and see what they have to say about it? I wouldn't be making any serious decisions that affect my family or my community based upon what rando Pinsiders think.

    this is sound advice

    #80 4 years ago

I wish I could afford St. Maarten. Double the cost of going to mexico or cuba.
I say go!!! You could stay home and worry when you are old and gray.
