Yes it can happen. A 339 error can give the wackiest problems. Do yourself a favor that is quick, easy, cheap and saves future frustration. Clip the chip and put in a socket. If something shocked it one you may lose it again.

Clipping means you can remove one leg at a time and not damage lans. Putting in a socket means you wont heat a chip. Socket make it easier when you find out you put it in the wrong direction.
