I've included here a photo of my friends TZ playfield along with a close up version of the same photo. It shows what looks like small cracks on the playfield. You can just feel them with your fingernail if you rub it over them. I just wondered if it is a sign that the PF is starting to de-laminate.
Has anybody seen or had experience of this?

Looks like planking to me, but I'm certainly no expert.

I'd agree it's planking, and my TZ was worse than that one. Captain Neo restored mine a couple of years ago, and it looks great now.

I would call it planking too. And the only thing you can do about it to the best of my knowledge is to have it touched up and re-cleared. Otherwise, you're simply just trying to keep it from getting any worse by keeping it somewhere climate controlled and waxed. Though, in this case, having dirt in the planking might be less obtrusive than it being clean. How ironic is that?

I'm surprised one can't sand down the planking then touch up paint afterwards.

You can.. but you have a problem filling in the voids with just paint. That's why people go the clear route... easier to fill and sand than spot paint.

Will this get worse, or will it just stay as it is? Because at this stage, it really doesn't seem bad and it's only in a couple of places. The rest of the playfield actually looks exceptional.

I think from here on out, extreme changes in temperature and/or humidity is gonna dictate how much the planking worsens. (Again, I'm no playfield expert.)

If you keep it in a well climate controlled area without extreme changes and humidity, keep it well waxed, it most likely will not get any worse over time. However if you really enjoy the machine and wish to keep it, at some point you might want to consider having the board touched and clear coated.

Machines will never take the abuse that's on route within our homes and TZ is already 20 years old so thus meaning, if you give it the proper care you should be fine.

It's in the guys living room, so I don't see it getting heat problems anymore, plus as you've said, it will probably only get an average of ten or so plays a week. So hopefully, this won't get much worse.

Does anyone know of a good way to touch up the black on the PF?

if your wanting to "touch that up" professionally... its not a quick task. (aka re clear the playfield after simply painting it.)

if your wanting to cheat.. ignore or use a sharpie

unless your stripping the playfield and dooin a full job I dont see why you would bother. wax it up. might just dip some paint and use a needle to paint it and a needle to clear it - but you risk making a larger mess then if you had just left it.

    What's a sharpie please?

Aha! A marker pen. I thought it was going to be something really technical and specialised.

    Cheers Spudgun.

haha no worries... you could use a paint pen, but then you just risk making a mess.. try arcrylic and a needle and just filling in the hairline crack and wipe off the excess it might work well as well.

I've bought a small pot of black wood dye today. As it's very watery, I'm going to try painting it into the hole and see if it looks OK. It should be easy to wipe off any excess as it's quite a light ink.
