A good friend of mine and I disagree about rush. He says rush is not rock and roll.

I say they are progressive rock and roll. They’ve been sort of been defined for decades to me as progressive Rock. So it’s simple for me. I thought I would ask pinside. Is rush rock?

My answer is yes.

Wtf does he think they are; Acid Jazz?
Just not worth the time

You mean former friend.

Rock & roll comes in various flavors. Rush is most certainly one of those flavors.

If your friend doesn't think it's rock, what does he think it is?

[edit]: Well, I suppose technically speaking, it's not the original rock & roll from the 40s & 50s that went onto inspire many of the various flavors of rock that exist today. Is that what he means?

#6 2 years ago

I wonder what other perfectly reasonable opinions this friend has!

#7 2 years ago

Rush is rock n roll.

Shitty rock n roll.

(working Man excepted)

#8 2 years ago

Now that’s just asinine

#9 2 years ago

I think it has some thing to do with the technical description of rock and roll in his mind, as forceflow suggested.

#10 2 years ago

rush changed with their phases... first two albums are as rock as zeppelin.

#11 2 years ago

Also I feel like metal and grunge are both rock and roll. Fully. Not everyone agrees with me.

I feel like grunge is technically punk rock. And I love it, but like I said not everyone agrees with me.

Rush baby. I like the progressiveness.

#12 2 years ago

The trees disagree!

#13 2 years ago

I was 14 yrs old when Rushs first album was released. They were so far ahead of their time, I was amazed it was only 3 guys. Of course their music is rock n roll!! Damn ,I got old quick

#14 2 years ago

Just to be clear.... it's not me he's talking about.

RUSH = ROCK N ROLL.

It’s rock to me.

Conventional rock and roll typically has a 4/4 or 2/4 rhythm, right? I think Rush experimented with all kinds of crazy rhythms like 11/16’s to 15/16’s etc changing every couple of bars throughout their songs…I feel they did this much more than most other bands. Still rock…just maybe not with conventional rock beats.

Got to play a Rush pro on Friday. Another fun stern with good shots and flow.

Invite your friend over. Put this CD on. Turn it up. Then ask him if he changed his mind.

Those are both great bands!

Columbus would probably be doable, depending on how Covid is cooking by then - yep, I'm old, but if it's safe, we could do another pinside reunion

Yeah I have taken mine literally around the world, probably 25 countries, and it's still the best sounding thing out there

It currently has 1.5 tb of music in it

Even had to open it up and put a new battery inside, poor thing looks like it's been in a tornado, lol

#28 2 years ago

It wasn't until the last 5 years that I realized Pioneer made $500,000 speakers. Explains why they've always been top shelf for me.

#29 2 years ago

On my 3rd XDP. The last one the screen broke and they said no bueno.

#30 2 years ago

Ironically I'm saving that one's screen for as long as possible. Sounds like I might have all the parts

I was once working with a guy named 'Chewy" at the Biosphere in AZ and listening to a crappy rock station doing "Rush hour" after listening to them for at least an hour, dude turns to me and asks "man, who IS this chick?" I about fell out.
Can't stand Rush, but you gotta love the Queers! Saw hewhocannotbenamed eating a burrito at the joint down the street from my shop a year ago or so, was blown away.

Is that the stuff you used to snort? I remember my friends had a small bottle of something they called rush which they would take the cap off and snort. Had no idea what it was or what it did.

Another Fullerton resident speaking up for the genius of Rush! Definitely Prog Rock in my mind, whether that puts them in the "Rock 'n' Roll" category is just a matter of semantics.

Semantics are cool!

A nice write up.

Just watched Time Machine concert at home recently. That one is so good as you can tell the band is having so much fun and they are playing everything a bit looser. They knew their time was coming up and were savoring it. Highly recommended!

#47 2 years ago

I agree on that assessment of time machine.
