That's a very nice find.
Pull those old red batteries out immediately, and bury them with full honors for not leaking - they deserve it.
Put in Lithium AAs, which are (almost) leak-proof.
Combine the Lithium AAs with a remote battery holder and that's as bulletproof as it gets without delicate soldering.

The RAM in that board is not socketed. You can't just slap a NVRAM chip in.
