We've explored the best, now what's your pick from the bottom of the barrel?
I'm going to name five of the ugliest IMHO, in no particular order except what I think is #1.
I know many of you are going to name Williams "Granada"/ "Spanish Eyes" as the worst, or right up
there with the worst. I don't really have a problem with that glass; to me it's definitely different, but not
terribly objectionable. One of you may name one that I will agree beats my #1 worst, but that's gotta be
one fugly backglass!

#5 Bally "El Toro"
#4 Williams "Student Prince"
#3 Williams "Post Time"/ "Paddock"
#2 Williams "Straight Flush"/ "3 Jokers"
and #1 Bally "Galahad" (man, what's in that wine goblet anyway?)

What say you?

#10 10 years ago
Quoted from rockfantasyman:

i love jungle king ! classic gordon morrison
and i dig big top too

Gotta say, I never had a problem with "JK". Not among the prettiest by any stretch, but no where near as bad
as "Galahad"!

Bally Vampire:
http://ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=2716&picno=2589
(Just try looking at it for more than a few seconds. Go on, try!)

Agreed. "Vampire" is pretty bad! I had a friend who had this game in his gameroom for years among some of the
best Gottlieb wedgeheads. Every time I visited him, I chided him about still having it. He finally did unload it. Whew!

#14 10 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Galahad is pretty hideous, but to me so is this.

Not really diggin' the Tarzan dude, but Jane is not too shabby!

#24 10 years ago
Quoted from AlexF:

Speaking of taking a dump. What's with this dude on the 2001 back glass. Once again I don't know that I really hate it overall but it would be low on my list. Extremely subjective as it was also on the best list. I would expect to see Spanish Eyes get mentioned at some point. That one is always polarizing. I like it.
Not em but when I used to think of bad back glasses Flash would always to mind. But then after playing it I found the game to be a lot of fun and the whole art package started to grow on me.

Never noticed the guy with the cheekload on "2001".

Quoted from o-din:

Pointy people are all right by me.

Some are more "pointy" than others. Wasn't there a guy named Jerry Kelley who also did "pointy people" art?

o-din, Who knows, maybe one day someone will do the R-Rated Topless version Backglass for you like the Bally Twin Win!
Ken

I don't have the game, but if they ever make that glass, put me down for one!

#95 10 years ago

Nah, c'mon! With that voluptuous (as well as voluminous) female protuberance!

#97 10 years ago

Oh gosh, this is just awful! Checked ipdb for Jerry Kelley, and he too does pointy people. This is one of the very worst. Could be in the running to unseat "Galahad"!

Quoted from pinballslave:

It's fair to say that there's some very bad backglasses around... how about these:

Formula x.JPG 36 KB

The Hunter.JPG 48 KB

Who drew these? They almost look like home drawn or for home version games. Yuck!!!

#118 10 years ago
Quoted from IntoPinball:

Williams 'Blue Chip'... Yuck.

Yeah, "Blue Chip" is pretty bad. I remember seeing that game brand spanking new in the local arcade back in the day and I immediately thought the artwork was horrendous on both the backglass and playfield! The theme was very strange to me too at the time. Nothing having to do with fun and no babes with big boobies!

#128 10 years ago
Quoted from sk8ball:

Dyn o mite!

image.jpg 42 KB

This backglass may just have wrested the #1 title from "Galahad" imho! Egadddd!!!!!

#129 10 years ago

What is he singing? I'll tell you what he's singing. He's singing a song about growing up with an egg-timer-shaped head and eyebrows that look like they've been squeezed out of a tube marked "INCINERATE ONLY."

LMAO!!!! Yup, this glass is one of the worst as well! Williams had some good playing games that had some gadawful artwork all around. This is one of them.

#136 10 years ago
Quoted from jrpinball:

Oops! Broke my own rule. Not an EM, but hideous nonetheless.

#142 10 years ago
Quoted from sk8ball:

Actually it is. It's an em with weird gas displays. There are no circuit boards in the game. At the time they called it a "hybrid"

Hmm, ok then, I stand corrected. I think that gets the ugliest vote then. Even worse than "Galahad"!
I didn't know "Dyn-O-Mite" was similar in design to those strange Rally games with the nixie tube displays.

#144 10 years ago

Just came across this masterpiece! They didn't even spell the name correctly!
http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=3183&picno=17355&zoom=1

#145 10 years ago

Oh, man; I just struck the mother lode with these Rally games! Here's another Rembrandt!

#150 10 years ago
Quoted from Gerry:

But Student Prince still is the ultimate in nasty !

Agreed. It rivals "Galahad" for the #1 spot.

#151 10 years ago
Quoted from Gerry:

This one's funny as all get out...

What would they be singing; maybe "Yabba Dabba Yabba Dabba Dabba Do Now"!

#155 10 years ago
Quoted from Gerry:

But Student Prince still is the ultimate in nasty !

You know, upon further review, you just may be right about "SP". WTF is the theme anyway! One of the dumbest titles for a domestic game too. Who thought of that one?

#156 10 years ago
Quoted from alb0711:

Jolly Captain is kind of HOT!

You mean "Joly"!

#159 10 years ago

Yeah, and "Miss Q" in French must mean something like "that chick likes it up the arse" because Williams was forced to change the name of the game to "Miss O"! Fuggedaboudit!!!!

#160 10 years ago
Quoted from PhilGreg:

Jolie in french means pretty... maybe they wanted to do some misguided pun.

So they still don't know how to spell? Even in French?

Hey Guys,
I know it's been a while, but I really loved this thread when it was goin' strong. I just found another stinker that I don't think has been mentioned here yet, and I'm hoping it might spark a renewed interest in this thread:

SUSPENSE!!! ...by the ever-polarizing Christian Marche.
Side querry: Does anyone know if Christian Marche is still alive today? Did a quick seach and basically turned up a bunch of pinside/IPDB listings...and a French guy on Facebook. *L* Despite this post, I really appreciate his contribution to pinball and any info would be appreciated.
Best,

Quoted from cjmiller:

It's not the worst glass ever, but Slick Chick's backglass is just a mess, especially since the artwork on the playfield is some of the best Gottlieb ever did and Slick Chick is such a great game. It deserves better.
I mean, come on, the women don't look anything like Bunnies, they're not sexy or even cute, and their outfits remind me of Ralphie wearing the bunny outfit in Christmas Story. If that's not bad enough, you have the creepy Dapper Dan guys from Disneyland standing there, and they're more into each other than the women which isn't surprising since they look like 1970's porn stars.

slick_chick_1.jpg 61 KB

Totally agree. This is one of the worst backglasses on a Gottlieb wedgehead. The game deserves better.

#180 10 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

I'm sure to somebody this kind of art is a real museum piece, but I just don't see it. It almost looks like some of those Galahad dudes there, and she looks like she might just be related.

I kind of like the spooky surreal twilight feeling this glass portrays. Always liked Stenholm's work.

Just found this one on ipdb. It's right up there with the worst.

This one is ugly!

_sprin_bg.jpg (Click image to enlarge)

Yeah, it's so bad that I got a free one at the Allentown show. It was about to go into the trash, so I scooped it up to save it from that fate, although it probably deserved it!
As far as "Duotron", my brother had one many years ago that was converted to add-a-ball through the replay counter. It's another one of those Gottlieb games that's truly much better when you're playing two players. I thought it wasn't a bad player, but a pretty dang ugly game. "Jungle King" was one of my favorites back in the day. Loved those big "pepperoni" WOW lights, and how they flashed as the bonus counted out after the ball drained.

Quoted from o-din:

Palooka is one of those machines that pictures of the backglass alone don't do it justice . As a whole it is a very colorful, beautiful machine. As usual, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is one of my favorites by Art Stenholm. And it is never leaving.
291177-i.jpg

Agreed. I think that's a great backglass, and I love Stenholm's work. He is very similar to Roy Parker in many ways.

#245 8 years ago

Odd game with an odd name and an odd backglass. Not one of the prettiest.
image-2.jpgimage-2.jpg

#249 8 years ago
Quoted from PinballFever:

You have to wonder what they were thinking of when they came up with the name and the mauve background color is ugly!
I checked ipdb and it seems Inder manufactured some other games with odd names.... Tasty Samba anyone?

Gawd, that's ugly!!!

I was thinking about going to check out a Williams "Suspense" that's being auctioned tomorrow, but upon further review (seeing what the backglass looks like) I don't think I'll waste my time. I started this thread long ago with my top five ugliest backglasses ever, and I don't know why I didn't include this one. Someone did mention it, and I agree. It just may be numero uno!

This only scratches the surface of some of the goofballs I see every day. I'm glad they fit in with the theme.

Those are fabulous!

There are some really, really ugly foreign backglasses. So, if we do a poll, I think we should limit it to domestic backglasses. Bally "Galahad" is just about as bad as it gets IMHO.

#337 6 years ago
Quoted from girloveswaffles:

Maybe this is why they don't show the front of the machine:

I mean, WT actual F is going on in this artwork?

I don't know. I really like some of the shapes on that one!

#345 6 years ago
Quoted from electricsquirrel:

I always liked North Star, but this bothers me.
Why is the skewered fish looking up at the girl and smiling?
E

Because the fish thinks she's hot!

Quoted from Grayman_EM:

JR would you say worse than a bag of cheeseburgers with pickles?

I've been in Plainfield a couple of times before. Did I meet you somewhere and tell you this story over a mug of ale?

Quoted from Mardi-Gras-Man:

Since this Topic seems to be used almost exclusively to bash Christian Marche and Gordon Morison I think IMHO that some work of Roy Parker could be named as well. Of course I know Roy Parker is a God to many of us but on the other hand he surely didn't always hit it.
So please make your own conclusions about these artworks from the 50ies.
And especially for the great Fan-Base of GALAHEAD - if you love Galahad you'll get crazy over FALSTAFF, I'm sure

Admittedly, Parker drew some funky looking characters, but all those backglasses look great to me. Seems to me, Mr. Morison just about copied Parker's Atlas on his "Vulcan" backglass.

#348 6 years ago
Quoted from Grayman_EM:

I think wrong Plainfield JR there are about 20 and Indiana has two of them an incorporated town which I live in (population about the size of NJ one) and an unincorporated town up north near Gary In. Read it in the Road Trip thread and don't forget the coffee. I feel sorry for you as there is nothing worse than being sick and having to drive.

The Plainfield I was in is just west of the Indy airport.
Now I recall sharing that story here. Yeah, that was bad, but I did come home with a "Diamond Jack". I think that was my second of the seven I have owned. To this day, I still tell them to hold the pickles when I get a fast food burger!

#351 6 years ago
Quoted from Grayman_EM:

So you were here in Indiana, sorry I didn't run into you. But I am the one without any pins.

I've been out there a few times in the past. Not anymore though. Gets you some pins!

Agreed. Should have been much better. This and Stern's Dracula - I guess vampires were too difficult for pinball artists.

Yup. Stern's "Dracula" is one ugly backglass!

Quoted from Sea_Wolf:

It’s a great thread and to each his own but the thread could have been ended after 1 post. Having this thing in a lineup would ruin the look of your whole game room.
[quoted image]

For years, a good friend of mine had this game in his gameroom among his predominantly Gottlieb wedgehead collection. I kept bugging him about it, but he really liked the game. He finally got a good offer on it from someone who really wanted it, and at last it was gone!
