CF, while researching the best flowing and funnest pinball ever made, I was somewhat surprised to see your comments in this thread:

Looks like you had the same opinion of Tron as I did until you got hooked (as did I). Funny how Tron will do that to you if given the chance...

#2757 5 years ago

Cool, thanks--didn't see that one yet. Tron really sneaks up on ya then grabs you by the nads--at least it did me!

#2796 5 years ago

Of course it is--best thread ever--keep it rockin'!

#2817 5 years ago

After playing Tron for awhile, I'm starting to believe that the Gem shot might be the most satisfying shot to hit on any of my pins. Each and every time I hit that shot it seems like a real accomplishment. If I can actually hit it while following Gem it's almost like hitting the lotto...

2 weeks later
#2845 5 years ago

I printed these out and they really look good--thanks!

#2849 5 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

Sweet, happy to share.

Now the only bummer is the upper images on the apron don't look as good as yours...maybe something to replace these might be in order?

#2851 5 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

Haha, I know right? Don't think it hasn't occurred to me ...

Excellent! When you can't stand it any longer and come up with something cool, sign me up as your first customer.

#2857 5 years ago
Quoted from KevInBuffalo:

Solution: Put the LE apron with the flashers on your pro

I've thought about doing that--be cool to have a metal apron and flashers--but it is a pricey proposition for a relatively minor upgrade. I'm betting Aurich could come up with something pretty nifty...

#2897 5 years ago

I finally hit Portal tonite! Got lucky on cleaning up what modes I needed to finish with SoS and whattayaknow--the Portal light came on! I was so jazzed that I actually made that shot I had no idea of what to do next, but I did get several extra balls so I must have hit something I was supposed to. Anyone have any scoring tips in case I totally luck out and manage to get to Portal again?

#2914 5 years ago

Has anyone bought (or seen in person) one of these blue aprons? Looks like it might be cool, I'm not sure I want to invest in the LE metal upgrade...

#2941 5 years ago

Is there a source in the US for the clear spinning disks?

#2943 5 years ago
Quoted from labnip:

got mine from germany pretty cheap a few yrs ago.

If I can't find one I may have to get the vendor info from you. I'm surprised these are not carried over here by someone.

#2945 5 years ago

Thanks CF.

#3023 5 years ago

Actually, they do make white ones--they look kinda spiffy in the right location.

#3058 5 years ago

Well....let's get this back on point.

TRON is the best pin, ever!

1 week later
#3107 5 years ago

Dude, you are gonna have to get in the true Tron spirit or have your club membership revoked (sorry if I spoke out of turn, CF)! Tron is no game to cheap-out on the mods--do it right or don't bother...

#3493 5 years ago

I'm collecting parts to do the LE apron mod on my Pro. Does anyone have a couple of pieces of Mylar they don't particularly need (enough to line the apron where the balls will contact it)--it will cost more than it is worth to have a small sheet shipped from Marco. Thanks.

#3495 5 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

Yeah, I have a huge sheet, pm me your addy and Ill mail it out to you.

Thanks CF, I only need a small bit of that.

#3502 5 years ago

Just finished installing the metal apron--now just have to hook up the flashers. You don't realize just how cheesy looking the plastic apron is until you take it off and replace it with the metal apron that should have been on there in the first place...

#3505 5 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

So you saying I should mail that Mylar pretty soon? Lol!

#3549 5 years ago

Math is no friend of mine, but if I have this figured out correctly (we'll see here in a second), can't think of a better place to roll over to 2 mil in karma...

#3554 5 years ago

OK, since Tron Leader has done some nice work, I'll post my insignificant tiny feat. I hit 7.5-something million following Gem yesterday. I have never hit Gem that many times in my life in one game. Had several good chances to get to Portal the last couple of days, bricked the shots I needed--not worthy like CF...

That is all.

#3558 5 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

Trophy was excited for me to get Portal but she said she lost her "powers" when I had the long ball times! LOL!

Serious points--nice!

#3579 5 years ago

Wow...instead of a making a very cool film like next installment of Tron, Disney is gonna rehash The Jungle Book, Alice: Through the Looking Glass and Beauty and the Beast? I hope they all bomb--I won't be making a theater trip for any of them.

Quoted from Frax:

Epically pissed off at myself. Apparently I never ordered a replacement disc other than a black one.
Oh yeah, and my ACL is torn, verified. Awesome.

Hope you have a better Dr. than I did--"Elway and Marino don't have ACL's and do just fine. And, you are too old for me to fix it--take you a year to fully recover--if you ever do."

#3967 5 years ago

Yikes! I think I'm gonna put my new clear disk on upside down!

#4017 5 years ago

I don't think I'm gonna need that Taser I've been saving up for--I'm just gonna attach the clear disk to a battery powered disk sander and zap people with that! Prolly tear your arm clean off...

#4034 5 years ago

What!? If I'da know I was gonna get some spiffy photos of CF, I woulda ordered more disks!

#4038 5 years ago
Quoted from Gov:

It is expensive, but it is one of the coolest mods out there I think. Every person that comes and looks or plays my machine is blown away by the tiny arcade

You are really right about that. Even non-pinball people think the tiny working arcade machine is the coolest thing they have ever seen--totally disregarding the way cooler ramp lighting...

#4049 5 years ago

If I somehow get lucky enough to post a score, I always dawdle so I can hear/feel that bass run, as well!

#4091 5 years ago

When the time comes and someone swaps out blue for color (and I know several of you will), I'll want that blue DMD...

#4093 5 years ago

OK, but only if you can send it with "Billy16" listed with that Grand Champion score...

#4151 5 years ago
Quoted from Erik:

gets really pricey when you gotta hire a local girl to dress up like Quorra and strike action poses next to your pin every time you want to play.
worth it tho

I did the same thing! It is annoying, however, when the girl asks after every game if I want a happy ending... I tell her--"Of course I want a happy ending, but I just can't get to Portal!" I finally told her to stop asking...

Quoted from mcluvin:

Since he is your friend, what did he pay for it? If he paid that much himself and you want to avoid risk, go for it. My Tron Pro (3rd Run, Eli mod, Shaker, Arcade mod, Rails, Armor, Light Cycles, Sideboard Decals), purchased roughly 11 months ago was $4650. It was purely a business transaction and I know I got a good deal. If I ever need to sell it, I probably won't lose any money. You pay ~$6K for a stock Tron Pro and need to sell it, you are probably going to lose some money.

You got more than a good deal, someone gave you a stupid good deal!

#4580 4 years ago
Quoted from mcluvin:

It was a stupid good deal, but truly I'm not a new pin buyer. It was a stretch for me to pay anything north of $3K for a pin, but I really like Tron so I waited for the price to come down and I stretched (for me anyways). Does anybody here really think $5900 is a good price for a slightly used, stock Tron Pro? I just don't think so.

I agree that I would expect several nice mods for $5900, but what you got your modded Tron for is not representative of what the going rate is.

No price is too high for your own Tron pin. Doooooooo it

It would be nice if my clear discs from the Germans show up says " expect 30 day delivery" but didn't think that could be right ( I'm nearing that on my order)....what's the normal time for delivery from these guys?

Just a wild guess, but they may be waiting for one of their new arrivals to head to the US, and stick it in his backpack...

On occasion my game will shut down as if the ball had drained--when it is still on the playfield. Then the ball does drain and it moves on to the next ball--happy as a clam. Any ideas of what I should to check to stop this error?

#4951 4 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

Zip tie the connectors together for the trough opto boards first and report back after a bunch of games.

Thank you for the tip, I will do that.

Quoted from west6926:

Stern actually sells a repair kit for this problem if the zip ties don't work

Cool, I'll order that if I need to--part number (or whatever Stern calls this kit), perhaps?

#5018 4 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

Im taking donations to buy a color DMD.
Wont you help me out? My kids haven't eaten in weeks but they said a color display in TRON would end their hunger pains.

Perhaps if you send me your blue one your kids will notice it missing, deduce the new color DMD is on the way and magically feel sated even before it arrives!

#5023 4 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

I was removing it from the game to send it to you but I dropped it on the floor and it broke. I'm really sorry about that.

Thanks dude for the thought! Tell me what the kids need--I'll send it!

I don't think you will regret this, there just can't be many (any?) more of these out there. Tron LE is one the pin we all (well, most all of us) wish we had...

Now get started at page one and enjoy the ride.

#5314 4 years ago
Quoted from northvibe:

On a tron pro, what is the trick or technique to hit the gem shot off the right flipper? I read people bank it off the stand ups?

That is as good a way as any to make that shot, I aim for it all the time.

#5318 4 years ago
Quoted from labnip:

Wait wait wait justa sec....
We're supposed to be aiming at stuff ?!?

Funny you should say that, I was thinking I actually scored better when I wasn't aiming at stuff...

#5376 4 years ago
Quoted from centerflank:

I hit gem with the lower left flipper just an hour ago...

If anyone but TRON Leader said this was possible I woulda been somewhat doubtful...

That being said, I actually did this today and was amazed that it happened. Ball started on the inside of the left flipper, hung on it just enough to give it some right spin and damned if it didn't loop right thru Gem! Not sure who was more surprised of the backdoor attack, me or Gem...

#5382 4 years ago
Quoted from labnip:

See my serious for sale thread for Tron LE
First $45,045 gets it

Someday down the road someone will unearth this thread, see this price and remark "Man, I wish I was around when Tron LE's were still affordable..."

#5396 4 years ago
Quoted from labnip:

everyone musta spent that last 24 hours playing tron, i guess....
( ( (( ping )) ) )

Not too far from the truth--been playing like crazy as I was determined to get back to Portal. Finally did it, then drained all the balls in record time...been so long since I was there I forgot what to shoot at. Any tips appreciated--in case I get back there again.

#5442 4 years ago

Love TRON more than Lamp--of course, who wouldn't! But...more than Lightning Kitty? I think I'm warming up to the ferocious feline...Phffitt-Rowrrr!!

#5496 4 years ago

Soliciting advice on Portal strategy (should I ever get there again). Your hot tips appreciated...

#5499 4 years ago

No, no--I am serious, I really want some tips! How do I rack up a decent Portal score? Last time I was so surprised to actually get to Portal I had no idea of what to do...and the balls couldn't get back into the rack fast enough.

#5508 4 years ago
Quoted from shacklersrevenge:

Funny thing is, I almost did it the other day. I've always considered it a pretty unlikely completion, so never set out to do it. With that said, if you get into Portal, you have to make a lot of good shots right off the bat, because you have your ball saver. Once that is gone, you have to trap a ball on a flipper and make do with shots like that- I wouldn't have been able to do so without doing this. Keeping in mind also, that every what, 4 or 5 major shots in the same shot row adds a ball. The shots that will hang you up with be Gem and the one between the pops. I had gotten lucky and popped 3 -4 gem shots while in the beginning stages of Portal with several balls in play.
When I made the final shot, it was a quorra, and it's harder to hit when that wall is down. I had one trapped, and I tried a good 2-3 times before I smack it through, from there i took the trapped ball on the left flipper and sent it into the disk for the 25 million super, it was a great feeling.

I think I had this down at two posts, but you never can be too good thing for the third. Thanks for the tips!

Quoted from labnip:

I always take off the glass.
Seems to help a ton.
Can't say why...

I'm way ahead of the curve on this one, I read this was the way to score big and I took the glass of all my games. I still can't score good, so I am dubious of this suggestion.

On the plus side, last week one ball had so much spin on it coming off the disk it jumped clean off the table and hit lil' Billy17 right in the chops--dropped him like a sack of rocks. After he woke up he can now speak 8 foreign languages, so I guess it does work OK for some things...

#5574 4 years ago

So I'm playing today and just had a feeling before I started I was gonna get to Portal. I'm marching along and hitting some lucky shots and start making a lot of lights solid going up the ladder. I keep going and get them all solid except one, and I'm on the last ball. The most unlikely mode I need to finish is flashing--Find Flynn. What are the odds of that? I (finally) hit it and go to Portal with the bonus, did just OK in Portal, got back to SOS again and tanked. I was waffling, but now I really do love TRON more than Lightning Kitty...

#5601 4 years ago
Quoted from marcd:

Does anyone know where I can get the Stern LE Apron with triangle cutouts ?
It's out of stock at pinballlife and marco.

Hopefully you can find one--it is the favorite mod I did on the game myself--100% better than the cheap plastic apron w/ crappy decals. Super cool when the flashers pop on!

#5640 4 years ago

Unlike some other threads, this has always been the one place where it is always cool to be. Perhaps we can keep it that way.

1 week later
#6236 4 years ago

Just to see what would happen, CF touched the door...

#6267 4 years ago
Quoted from multibrawlr:

Remember when Stern used to sell games at Best Buy? I found a Tron on free play at one location that had so much dirt and crud on the playfield. The whole machine wasn't leveled properly and was tilted on one side. It was the dirtiest Tron I've ever seen. Wish I had taken pictures.
Right then and there I was tempted to bribe the store manager or something but I knew that it was gonna be unlikely. That would've been a cool opportunity to take it home and learn how to tear down a game, clean it up, and install some mods. Plus it was sad to see such a great game in poor shape. Hope get one down the line!
Oh yeah... and Tron is a beautiful, awesome game. Especially if you mod your Pro to be like the LE.

Tron Leader is on vacation, so no death rays will be aimed your way.

One area where the Pro actually plays better than the LE--half my Gem shots bank off the stand-up targets.

2 months later
#6606 3 years ago

I think I may have found the hardest way to hit Gem...or at least a way to hit it I'd never thought of. During multiball I had balls simultaneously tracking around the orbits. They met at the Gem exit at just the right point to bump one of the balls sideways into the switch. Not sure I'll ever be able to duplicate that shot...

#6610 3 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

Very cool!!!....the only way I ever " consistently " complete Gem is by multi ball skill attempts are very rare, at best.

I think Gem is 80% luck, anyway! I have the most luck banking it off the stand up targets. I'd really like to ask Borg if Gem was just an accident, or if he had any idea of how tough a shot this was going to be and of the many different ways of hitting that b#*%h of a shot we'd discover.

Yup, this is what I did (twice) which led to the question. I figured completing Portal would be impossible, hence the high scoring question.

1 month later
#7584 2 years ago

I think I have done the most legit (well OK, lucky) Gem shot twice launch during multiball--at the same time send a ball around the left orbit which hits the auto launch ball at the exit to Gem and bumps one of the balls back thru Gem! I might actually start aiming for this one...

1 month later
#7657 2 years ago
Quoted from Stones:

I started putting some leds in it now....left over bulbs I had...more on order. Totally agree on the arcade mod. I reached out to the folks who make them now. They said they will make another run late summer. I really looking forward to adding that on the machine. Not so sure about the Eli mod yet. I just put the color dmd in it yesterday.

I think the Eli mod is the definitive mod for a Tron Pro, everything else is just nice to have. The interactive ramp lighting changes the entire atmosphere of the game, and moves it closer to an LE--well worth the cost and installation hassle. Add some mirror blades and it multiplies the lighting effect.

#7660 2 years ago

I forgot about TimeBandits kit, that is very cool and another good way to go. Either way, light up those ramps!

Need to reinforce that connector some how. Now just to trouble shoot the e in zuse and we are back in full action

I'd try a zip tie before hot gluing, perhaps.

Regarding call outs. I think it's interesting the different approaches used, like Tron has a call out for Quorra or Zeuse (etc.) but it's not talking all over the game.
I was watching Iron Maiden video and it was all the time saying "shoot the right ramp" "Shoot the left ramp" whenever you hit a letter it would call out "M" and it was also counting down the time by the second.
I think that's crazy. I don't have too much time on Maiden but it just sounds way too talkative.

Maybe not, there is so much going on in Maiden I'll take all the help I can get!

You can print them yourself for about 5 cents worth of filament using the Thingiverse link provided earlier.
Not the same design but should work the same if not better. On mine you just put the entire target through the gap and then slide it in to lock it down. No desoldering required like those wrap around ones either.

Installed my Z and U today--fit perfectly.

Quoted from 85vett:

Point of clarification. Desoldering is not required. Curious how well your style is holding up. That was my first Avenue but they were breaking when built thin enough to work on games like x-men.

The full-size Thingy isn't going anywhere. My buddy was surprised at how much plastic went into it, he figured it could have been made with a lot less.

Any Tron owners rocking TNA in their collection? What are your thoughts about TNA?
I’m about to receive my TNA though it was similar due to music and fast playing although not as much flow as Tron (ramps).
One thing I dig about TNA is the color changing light show and the soundtrack really sucks you into the gameplay much like Tron.

TNA is no Tron, I hope you like it more than I did. Then again, I didn't think much of Tron the first few times I casually played it. After spending real time on it I got it and bought one. TNA is so limited in gameplay I don't expect I'll change my mind about it--but you never know...

Agreed, that little arcade is a value when you consider your ability as a player to interact/see it. There are a lot of mods out there with low value. An Aerosmith topper is 430 shipped! Cool sure, worth that hell no.
This arcade, eli's ramps and the MikeD creature mod are my favorite game changers...

Only thing I'd add to your short mod list is Jeff's CFTBL light panel mod. Maybe not quite a game changer, but impressive nonetheless.

Bummer if CF sold his Tron! Really miss him, this place isn't the same without him...

Added 21 months ago:

Now that his Tron has moved on, it seems permanent that he isn't coming back...

I could be (and probably am) wrong, but I'd be surprised if a shaker motor has the same bearings in it as a motor designed to run at a constant (and high) RPM. Then again, I could be thinking of "quality" rather than "let's just build them all as cheaply as possible"...

A new design Flynn's sign would be very cool--hope one of you guys do it!

That’s my nickname for trying to complete Light Cycle Mulitball, let alone reaching Portal.

Other than pure luck, maybe the easiest way to get LCM completed is left ramp-Quorra-right ramp. One three-way combo will do it--there are others but I forget what they are.

Probably a dumb question, but I've always wondered, what is the "Lightning Kitty" reference on the title of this thread? I assume it was something relevant when the thread was started 6 years ago.

Lightning Kitty is just bad-assed! And you are right, you are probably better off not asking...

I’m liking this game more than lightning kitty! Seriously, I am

Don't let the Kitty hear that...

Can't say that this is top flight, but for the money it sure works well and puts out a ton of low end:

Quoted from TigerLaw:

Thanks. Anything else needed with it to get it connected? Never used a sub before, thinking it’s time with Tron and maybe pick up a second for BSD.

You can also use the old fashioned way--lamp cord cut to length, attach ( I solder) alligator clips on one end and clip onto the cab speaker wire tabs, run wire thru a vent hole, hook the other end up to the sub. Make sure you don't run the wires out of phase--go neg to neg and pos to pos. One side of the lamp cord will be marked to help with this. I usually tin the ends that go into the sub, not required but it makes things cleaner.

I'd be willing to bet if you add a powered subwoofer the bass and overall sound will be just that much better. Nothing beats a powered sub for the really low frequencies.

If I were you, CF, I'd fear The Kitty a lot more than the Mods...

I'd like one of the Daft Punk stickers, is that possible?

#9504 4 months ago

I'm not even sure I know how to light TRON--it just happens.

#9517 3 months ago

To really step it up I'd can that plastic apron and install a metal one with windows and flashers under the windows (like on the LE). Easy mod to do, lighting code is already there.

I'm just glad someone at Disney is passionate about anything Tron, even if it is just the musical score. If it takes Daft Punk to get part III rolling--great!
