Quoted from Captain_Kirk:I'll be happy to explain it to you. There are two major points, so I want you to follow along closely, ok?
All right, here we go!
#1 Reboots. Yes, Hollywood has been making reboots since the beginning of their existence. There were several Wizard of Oz movies prior to the 1938 move everyone knows. There was a Ben-Hur movie in 1907 and again in the 20's before the Charlton Heston masterpiece came along. I have no problem introducing a new version of a movie to a new generation. It's been done for years. However, if there was ever a movie that didn't need a reboot, it's Ghostbusters. Why? Because the concept lends itself to expansion and turnover. Hell, even Venkman talked about franchising their business in the first movie. If Sony want to make a new Ghostbusters move, why not pick it up in the same timeline as the original series? Have the business in New York be one of many franchises throughout the country. You can bring in a new, younger cast, and still have some supporting roles for Ackroyd, Murray, and Hudson if they wanted. From there you could make additional movies based in other cites, allowing you to have a more diverse cast. Spread out the universe building like Marvel and DC.
#2 Gender. The Ghostbusters are essentially exterminators. How many female exterminators do you know? Exactly. They are not called the Orkin MAN for nothing. That being said, I think adding a female Ghostbuster to a new cast could be a great decision...is it serves the story. What would make a woman be interested in this line of work? Could make a for a really great character, playing off the boys. Instead of this approach, the whole concept of the new Ghostbusters is to be as gimmicky as possible. Let's have ALL of the Ghostbusters be women! After a few more lines of coke, Paul Feig said... "Yeah! Yeah! And let's make the receptionist a dude! HA!!! Perfect!" It's this kind of stunt casting, role-reversal nonsense that will make this movie suck ball sack.
Oh, and by they way, these particular women are NOT funny. They are really terrible.
Hopefully that clears it up for you!
I will try to articulate where I'm coming from without being condescending or combative.
1. This is a pinball forum.
At its best it can be a pinball community. A place where pinball enthusiasts come to discuss their passion for pinball. Help each other out, from technical solutions to large scale charity initiatives. Buy, sell, and trade machines. Learn things. Discuss strategies. Plan shows etc etc.
2. Everything that is not pinball is noise.
Most of the noise is totally harmless. It stems out of conversations relating to pinball. People discuss Mustang, and the discussion moves to cars. People discuss Ghostbusters, and the discussion naturally moves to the films. I have ZERO problem with that. It's part of what makes the forums a vibrant place.
However, sometimes that noise devolves in to vitriolic flame wars between butthurt whiners, and price police, and era or manufacturer fanboys etc etc. It's tiresome, and I simply tune out. It makes Pinside worse, but it's hard to control.
Sometimes, not nearly as rarely as I'd like to imagine, the noise is laced with homophobia and misogyny, and even some good ole fashioned racism! That totally sucks.
When I'm in a thread, and interested in the discussion, and the discussion contains backwards thinking bullshit like that... I feel compelled to point it out, in hopes that it improves the discussion in the future.
The Internet has given everybody a voice. The problem is, not everybody deserves a voice! It's like handing out violins to every single person in a village. You should take a little time to gain a little understanding of the instrument, and acquire some technique before you step up to the stage and start screeching away just because you can.
I love pinball. I think Pinside can continue to get better, and I don't think it's ever a bad thing to try to elevate a discussion.
Speaking of PINBALL. I'm genuinely excited to see this machine in action. I love ZY's art. He clearly has a super wide range of styles. He was obviously pushing the cartoony style here... Some people won't be fans of that approach, but we're getting hand drawn art, and that's awesome. Plus, I'm happy to see ZY's art on a machine that is actually being made!!! I think we all wanted that after the "he who shall not be named" fiasco.
