Quoted from TechnicalSteam:

Let's see? You know they make Playfields for this game right? I wouldn't recommend Hardtop for that game.
Hardtop is the best solution for games that have no other solution. If I took apart my Funhouse I'd want to put
the best solution in place. It's alot of work. Putting a Hardtop in is alot of work if done right.

At some point you have to ask yourself; does it make sense to spend $1k on a new playfield for a $1400 game considering there is now a 90% option for 1/3 the price even if the amount of work is the same?

At least for me, that isn't a difficult question to answer.

I went the polished insert route. I had some 500 and 800 grit pads left over from previous headlight restoration kit and then moved to 3000 3M trizact pads and finished with 3M's perfect-it #3. I was just using what I had on hand, but I think one could stick to what's in the 3M kit and get great results. I used a 4" DA polisher, but the kits come with a mandrel for a regular drill.

Quoted from Outsidedge:

We have stepped up our instructions included in the package to emphasize our suggestions for sealing the wood.

This is new news for me. What issues are to be expected for the those of us who installed a hardtop prior to this change?

#1662 3 years ago

I think you could do a quick and dirty mask job over the inserts and put a couple of coats down to seal in the majority of the wood. With the new recommendation, this is probably how I would handle my next hardtop install.

Quoted from ibis:

This is a trim router, it fits in your palm. Secondly the trim bit I linked runs under the hole, it cuts the laminate flush with the wood edge. Its absolutely the best two things to use when cleaning up holes, edges, and anything else on the Hardtop.

Yep, exactly this. I used a flush trim bit for cutting out my HS rollover holes. I made a video to show what this looks like in action.

Quoted from hd60609:

The problem I had was the similar bit I used drops into the hole for the insert but the upper hole near the playfield is just a tiny bit larger so the insert goes in but doesn't fall through.
I used a dremel to free hand and open up that upper opening. That tool that you had to remove the swarf was slick. That might have done the trick. Where did you get that?

The duburring tool?
