Cool. There’s tons of CF pins out there that will benefit from this hardtop. Such great classic art package on CF. Way back in the day I had to quit playing our first CF because it was slowly killing me to watch the playfield paint flake off as I played it.

I'd say that's a fair guess.

Would be in for a CF !!

Doesn’t look like Space Station.

Definitely not Space Station. LOL

#3107 1 year ago

Well, we're close in era to the F2K I need

CF will look awesome with a hardtop. Not an EM fan at all but CF is one I'd love to have someday.

#3108 1 year ago

Would love to see a Party Animal made.

#3109 1 year ago

Looks like it's Space Station! Judging by the poll.

Baby Pac?

#3111 1 year ago

I'm sure the licensing will make that difficult.

It’s kinda sad outside edge doesn’t post in this trade anymore.

When sanding down the playfield, could raised inserts like the ones below just be sanded down rather than having to pop them out or re-seat them?

[quoted image]

If they are sticking out that bad theyll probably pop out with just using your finger, I would reglue them, then yes you can sand them level.

#3119 1 year ago

Alway reglue. And make sure there is no sawdust trapped around the insert.

I don't think they've done any Stern, but F2K is what I need, too.

They have Stern Catacomb available.

Yep. Catacomb gives me hope for f2k.

I have F2K on the printer right now. I'll let you know how it goes. I have only made one hard top so far and honestly it didn't go that well.

Please make a MOTORDOME hardtop. IMO the game isn't worth a full playfield swap but it's a nice looking playfield that's worth fixing for $300-$400.

I owned one of those for a bit. I didn't hate it nearly as much as most people seem to. Then again, my first pin was an Af-Tor and I liked it so much I bought another *and* I'm willing to deal with all the headaches from it being a one-off annoying system to work on. Maybe I just like post-apocalyptical weird stuff.

Space Station.

Here is my mostly finished platform which I run my Gorgar and Firepower Hardtop conversions in. I will eventually do one on my Flash playfield too. https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/williams-system-3-6-multi-pin#post-7522190

Sorcerer hardtop would be cool. Those playfields almost always get worn.

I had actually thought they already had that one, obviously i was wrong.
Makes sense to have all the system 9's, most got beat to hell.

Yeah. I picked one up and enjoy it so much that I took it apart to get the playfield repainted. Hardtop would have been ideal.

I played one for the first time this week. What a great machine!

#3133 1 year ago

I'll keep suggesting Stellar Wars to keep it fresh. Every one I've seen has been trashed, including mine (although I have a spare that's in better shape than the other).

I would be willing to ship the good one to my Hardtop peeps... in the interest of science, of course...

Just sayin'

Is Funhouse on the “so you’re telling me there’s a chance” list? I won’t buy a playfield from Mirco. I bought a used playfield that is way better than mine and will put a protector on that, but I’d really like a Hardtop instead.

#3135 12 months ago

Did Outside Edge once say that they will never do a Meteor for some specific reason? Was trying to find the post here but didn't, and am hoping I'm recalling incorrectly and there is still hope.

Just picked up another Laser Cue. Great game but the playfield just destroyed.

How have they done the roll-over inserts?
Just a hole or..? Regluing new ones at the same height as the hardtop..?

Quoted from ubbla:

You need to remove the rollover inserts and put them back after the hardtop goes down (preferably, replace with new and don't reuse the old one you popped out).

Here's a write-up and video explaining how to do it. Scroll down to the "Star Rollover" section:

Picked up an Eight Ball Deluxe awhile back that had a defective hardtop.

Here are some pics of the hardtop before removal:

Removing the actual hardtop itself wasn't too bad, but the aftermath of the removal has been time consuming. Removing the remaining art and adhesive has not been fun. Used a heat gun to get the art off, and a combination of Goo Gone and flour/alcohol for the adhesive. Using the Goo Gone, the adhesive ended up as a gelatinous gunk, as seen in one of the pics. I scraped off as much of the gunk I could, and then used the flour/alcohol method to get the rest off.

Been there, done that, hated it.

It does eventually all come off and then you can redo it. Not a fun experience though, for sure.

Yeah I got it all off and the playfield sanded to 400 grit. Just gonna do a little more work on the inserts before I spray the clear. I need to take a pic of how it looks now. Clean slate for sure. Thanks to you and some others for sharing your tips and pics on hardtop removal. Super helpful! Thought I would share my experience, too.

Is this a fault with the actual hardtop or with the prep of the surface before the hardtop was installed?

#3146 12 months ago
Quoted from roar:

This was a batch issue with this specific game title.

#3147 12 months ago

I know it was mentioned before about this problematic batch of hardtops and it was not a widespread issue.

My Taxi hardtop has been perfect for three years now. Great product.

Laser Cue Please!

#3148 12 months ago
Quoted from dq13:

This was a batch issue with this specific game title.

It also affected a run of Black Night. I had to tear up my EBD hardtop after the failure, but fortunately OE shipped me replacements for both and before I had installed my Black Knight.

If you don't want to research this thread for the gory details, here's the short version: OE's adhesive supplier changed the formula without notifying OE (they substituted a supposedly compatible chemical, which was less expensive, for the one tested and specified by OE). The formula change caused the printed artwork to lose its bond as well as its adhesiveness to the playfield surface. This resulted in "crackles" of artwork and "lifting" of the hardtop. OE got rid of that supplier and moved on to another with better business practices.

Dozens of hardtops were produced and shipped before OE discovered the true cause of the batch of field failures. I know of at least two titles, EBD and BK, that are affected but there could have been more. The date of hardtop production was around December 2020 to February 2021. Once OE acknowledged that the problem was on their end and that the spate of field failures were not pilot errors by the users, affected customers got free replacements. Bruce (the owner of OE) was really easy to work with through this ordeal.

My high speed has been perfect. Had some lifting issues with my space shuttle but it settled down. Similar issue with my mata hari but I've not looked at it recently. I think it settled down too.

I didn't do a great job on the replacement inserts with the second ebd and I could feel ridges (not OE's fault). I don't seem to love how they play on Bally games, but that's probably just me.

All in all I like the product and will happily use it in select cases. It's not perfect but it can be really good. I'd love to use one on my absolutely hammered Flight 2000.

#3150 12 months ago

Yes sorry to bring up an old issue. Definitely was a defective hardtop from that bad batch. Also didn't help that whoever installed that hardtop didn't clear the inserts. Anyways, I have enough faith in the product that I'll definitely be putting a new hardtop on this EBD. Since these things have shelf lives, I'm going to wait until the clear has cured for several weeks before getting another one.
